08.01.2022 World Down Syndrome Day 2021 When a lot of people hear 'Down Syndrome', there's a lot of misconceptions about what this means and what people living with this condition experience. This is because of outdated and medicalised stigmas about Down Syndrome, a lot of which comes up first in a google search. This information focuses on all the physical traits, the potential health complications, and a lot of assumptions about what this will mean in terms of quality of life. Wha...t it doesn't tell you is that, like neurotypical individuals, each person with Down Syndrome is an individual with a different mix of all of these features, not every single one. But most importantly, this information cannot even begin to shed light on the sheer light and wonder that these people can bring to this world. This is Henry, Nicola's son, who rocks his extra chromosome and spends each day showing this world that there's nothing down about Down Syndrome. He makes friends wherever he goes, lighting up this world with his giant smile and kind nature. Currently, he's enjoying a family holiday in QLD, living his best life like any other 17 month old. Today is World Down Syndrome Day and we encourage you to consider your own views on Down Syndrome and perhaps challenge any stigmas you may have. Do some research, not within a medicalised context, and try and learn about how these kids and adults are actually living their lives, rather than what is assumed of them!

07.01.2022 It's Secret Santa day at the clinic!

05.01.2022 Canberra has no shortage of activities for those looking to unplug and unwind in the evenings and weekends. Personally, one of my favorite ways to engage in mindfulness, and escape my over thinking brain, is a session at Bloc Haus. Bloc Haus is an indoor bouldering centre (climbing wall without ropes), which offers great coffee, good vibes, chilled people and good music. It's so easy to get lost in the moment, and simply just be in that environment. The challenge and physic...al exertion keeps you centered, and gives you something tangible to focus on. It also fulfills your brain's desire for both a quick hit of excitement, as well as gradual, slower dopamine release by hitting milestones. I also suggest Bloc Haus to my clients who have difficulty with social anxiety, as a way to slowly and gradually get themselves comfortable with difficult social interactions. Of course, this is something we go through in a guided and methodical way. If you want more details on this, feel free to give us a call to discuss. See you on the wall! Dr Elio Martino
