23.01.2022 Of the many challenges our communities faced at the height of COVID-19, of particular concern was the digital divide that saw vulnerable Canberrans being at risk of further social isolation. We saw this not only among our own participants but across the community sector, and as a result, elderly Canberrans, Canberrans living with a disability, and families from low socio-economic backgrounds were at risk of further marginalisation. Through the ACT Government's COVID-19 Rapid ...Response grant, CRCS has been able to distribute digital devices such as Wifi-enabled tablets and provide digital literacy courses to vulnerable people. Our community development officer, Tracy, discussed the program's benefits in her interview with ABC Canberra yesterday. The interview can be seen at this link, on the Wednesday episode starting from 06:24: https://iview.abc.net.au/show/abc-news-act For more information about our digital literacy program, call 6264 0200 or email [email protected] #TheCRCSFamily

23.01.2022 We are delighted to announce that Belconnen Community Service has officially changed its name to Capital Region Community Services (CRCS). This change is a direct result of our 2020-2030 Strategic Plan. After extensive consultation with key stakeholders, we changed our company entity so that we could reach across the border and support our communities in regional NSW as well as the ACT. Our name change was an organic response to this development. Belconnen will remain our h...ome and our services to the Canberra region will remain unaffected. In the next few weeks, you will see gradual changes to our social media and signage around Belconnen. Want the full story? Visit our website: https://bit.ly/2X26Jx4 We are so excited for you to join us on this journey and help us facilitate more inclusive and connected communities - from Belconnen to the Capital Region! 21.01.2022 At Bruce Ridge Early Childhood Centre, our educator team meetings are a great opportunity for us to reflect as individuals or as a collective. Last week the team spent part of the meeting reflecting on their view of the child and how this influences their practices, pedagogies and interactions. "As an educator, I believe children are extremely CAPABLE and this influences my practices in many ways. Open-ended resources are provided to allow children to explore, experiment, te...st theories and engage in any manner they choose. We also provide opportunities for risk-taking, allowing children to choose how to use their environment and giving them space and time to see how manoeuvring their body influences their actions and provide opportunities to test theories. I believe if we provide opportunities for children to make choices and be independent in a safe and secure environment where they know us adults are here to enjoy in their wonder, share in their successes and support them when they need assistance children will be free to be themselves and grow to be active participants who are able to employ problem-solving skills, understand how to meet their own needs and are willing to learn, explore and extend themselves. Have you thought about how your own actions and the words you use influences how children or adults in your workplace or family feel about their own abilities? #TheCRCSFamily

We also had an original performance by children’s songwriter Damon to mark the occasion! 18.01.2022 Families love sending their children to our Early Education and Care centres - we know, because they've told us! Our child-directed environments and intimate settings make it easy for us to get to know our families better and provide more personalised education and care for children. It's one of the reasons we enjoy being a community-based Early Childhood Education and Care provider. Find out more https://www.crcs.com.au/programs-and-services/childcare/... #TheCRCSFamily

18.01.2022 For International Volunteers Day, we're introducing you to our super-amazing CRCS volunteer and family member, Adelle! There's no questioning how popular Adelle is at Ginninderra Early Childhood Centre (GECC); the children are naturally drawn to her no matter where she goes! It's all fine with Adelle, though. "I love the children here!" she says. ... One child in particular has developed a very strong connection with Adelle and is more than happy to spend all day in her arms. Adelle, in turn, shows so much love and affection to her and the other children in her care. This is one of the many reasons she won the Exceptional Volunteer award at the CRCS All-Star awards this year. "I hope I can keep working here at GECC," Adelle says. And judging by the love and support she receives from the children and educators at GECC, we reckon we'll be seeing a lot more of her in the years to come. Thank you for all that you do, Adelle! #TheCRCSFamily #IVD2020

17.01.2022 In the third phase of the #KnowYourNeighbour campaign, we are reaching out to local community organisations doing their bit to make a world of difference in the community. Books, baby formula, prams, car seats, clothes and everything in between is what our next incredible Know your Neighbour community organisation Roundabout Canberra gets requests to supply. Roundabout's aim is to provide women and families experiencing hardship in Canberra and the surrounding regions with e...ssential items and equipment to ensure the safety of their babies and children. Founder Hannah started Roundabout three years ago when she no longer required all her baby’s gear and was keen to give it to other mothers in need. Mel (pictured) tells us that they had to move out of the Kaleen Indoor sports centre after it closed its doors due to the pandemic. The new headquarters are in Holt and although substantially larger, the generosity of Canberrans has meant that they are already ‘outgrowing’ these premises. Roundabout has up to 150 volunteers on their books, and they do everything from sorting the clothes and toys, pressure hosing equipment, and some of the volunteers are even trained to safety check the prams and car seats. One of the things Mel is most proud of is that nothing goes to landfill. Roundabout are having an auction from 6-8 November with some great stuff up for grabs! Check out @roundabout_auction on Instagram for more details and to enter. #TheCRCSFamily

16.01.2022 At Ginninderra Early Childhood Centre we hold strong values around each child’s relationship with the natural world. Being located in the middle of a town centre we appreciate the importance of allowing access to natural resources and environments. We believe in building each child’s understandings of environmental responsibility and sense of wonder by using Lake Ginninderra as an environment outside of the centre on a weekly basis. .nature-deficit disorder contributes to a... diminished use of the senses, attention difficulties, conditions of obesity, and higher rates of emotional and physical illnesses. Research also suggests that the nature-deficit weakens ecological literacy and stewardship of the natural world. These problems are linked more broadly to what health care experts call the epidemic of inactivity, and to a devaluing of independent play. Richard Louv #TheCRCSFamily

16.01.2022 In our third series of the #KnowYourNeighbour campaign, we are reaching out to local community organisations doing their bit to make a world of difference in the community. Canberra Refugee Support - ACT is another awesome not-for-profit organisation that is 100 per cent member-based and runs with the help of dedicated and passionate volunteers. The main aim of the organisation is to help asylum seekers and refugees become ‘as independent as possible, as soon as possible’. Br...ian (pictured) is the secretary for Canberra Refugee Support and has been volunteering there for eight years. He tells us that it was founded by Army officers, and being in the Army himself for 26 years, he wanted to do a volunteer role where it might make a difference. Brian says it is important to provide good neighbour support, so that when an asylum seeker or refugee moves into an area, they knock on the next-door neighbour's door and introduce them. This helps them establish themselves in our community. Talk about getting to know your neighbour! Other fabulous community organisations that work closely with Canberra Refugee Support are Companion House: Assisting Survivors of Torture and Trauma, MARSS (Migrant and Refugee Settlement Services) and Vinnies. #TheCRCSFamily

14.01.2022 At Ginninderra Early Childhood Centre, our environments support the many languages that children use to share their thinking of the world around them. Children explore, experiment, hypothesise, reflect and plan with a wide range of materials, valuing and building their creativity and playfulness. As an accredited ACTsmart business, we consciously make environmentally aware decisions, sourcing a lot of our materials from The Green Shed. These materials offer a variety of open...-ended resources that support all areas of development and learning. #TheCRCSFamily

10.01.2022 In the second phase of our #GetToKnowYourNeighbour campaign, we are talking to locals and asking them what they love about #Belconnen. The sun is sparkling on the water and there are shrieks of laughter when we discover Michelle playing with her children on the sand. You would be forgiven for thinking that they were at the beach, but in fact they are at a little hidden gem on the banks of lake Ginninderra called Yerra Beach. Michelle, a teacher, is originally from the NSW tow...n of Orange. She moved to Canberra 13 years ago and met and married her husband here. When asked what she loves most about living here Michelle states that she loves the outdoors. "It's the fact that you can be close to the city with all its facilities and then go to the outdoor areas and feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. You can have a picnic without all the hustle and bustle." What hidden gems have you discovered in Canberra? #TheCRCSFamily

09.01.2022 In the first phase of our #GetToKnowYourNeighbour campaign, we covered local businesses. In the second phase, we are talking to locals and asking them what they love about #Belconnen. Take a peek at one of the newest areas in Belconnen and meet one of its cheeky inhabitants. Zoe lives, works and plays in Strathnairn which is part of the eco-friendly, sustainable, Ginninderry Community project. Zoe and her older sister didn’t want to continue to be on the rental merry-go-roun...d and both decided to take the leap into buying their first homes. She was scared at first having never lived on her own, but once she saw that young families were moving into this new suburb, she felt safe and happy to be a part of this growing community. Zoe says she now understands the concept of borrowing ‘a cup of sugar’ from your neighbour. I know if I needed something they would always be there. Take a drive to this west side of Belconnen and you will think that you have driven into the countryside, rather than 15 minutes from the heart of Belconnen town centre. With its vista views of rolling hills, it’s a little piece of paradise. #TheCRCSFamily

09.01.2022 There was a delicious surprise delivered to the Children's Services Admin Team this morning, courtesy of the educators at Belconnen Early Childhood Centre To mark World Gratitude Day, BECC educators wanted to acknowledge the tireless hours the admin team puts into making sure their services run smoothly behind the scenes. Sandra also loves working with her School Age Care team to provide before and after school care and school holiday programs to children. 06.01.2022 Ever worked on a Geo Board or made face puzzles before? The children at Bruce Early Childhood Centre could teach you! With adult supervision, the children made Geo Boards using chopping boards and nails to make the base, and then creating intricate patterns by looping rubber bands around the nails. Face puzzles brought out more of their creativity when the children took turns drawing parts of a face on bottle caps and then putting them together to make a face. 05.01.2022 What comes to mind when you hear the word "family"? Families come in different forms and sizes, share different perspectives, live different lives. Each definition is unique, and each is important. At the start of 2020, our community centre and youth centre flooded with generosity from every corner of Canberra. Generosity towards complete strangers across the border whose lives were impacted by bushfires.... We adapted to an unfamiliar and at times quite disconcerting way of living, pushing barriers and finding new ways to connect with people. We rallied as a community to provide assistance to those who had a lot more to lose when COVID-19 forced us to isolate from one another. Hearts broke and mended, hopes dashed and rekindled. And through it all, we kept going, building greater connections not just in Canberra but across the border in NSW. And by "we", we mean you. If 2020 has taught us anything, it's that the strength of a community comes from its people. From Belconnen to the Capital Region, community connections have built meaningful bonds - much like how a family is made. It's been a rollercoaster of a year, but we have no doubt that this family will surprise, awe and humble us in 2021. This is #TheCRCSFamily, and we are only getting started. 03.01.2022 Now is the perfect time of year in Canberra to start a gardening project with children Gardening with children is a great experience. When children water the plants, help to plant the seeds or to remove the soil, they are developing different physical and cognitive skills, enhancing their social and emotional skills, fostering their sense of achievement and capability and caring for their environment. The sense of belonging and community when caring for something that belo...ngs to all of us is another positive aspect of a gardening project. Children can also reap the rewards of their hard work when they enjoy the veggies they harvested for afternoon tea. Our plants and veggie garden are creating a beautiful environment at BECC, and we are enjoying every stage of the process. #TheCRCSFamily

02.01.2022 On National Child Protection Week, we want to reinforce the view that protecting children is everyone's business. This is more than just a catchphrase. "Protecting Children is Everyone's Business" is the key message that the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 20092020 attempts to convey. It is underpinned by a public health model that understands that supporting families is the best way to address complex issues and ensure that children get the best start... in life. That is exactly what our Family Foundations team is all about. It is a unique service that combines the expertise of our therapeutic staff, educators and allied health professionals to provide the best outcomes for vulnerable families. 02.01.2022 Meet the CRCS family. This is Felicity - or Fliss, for short. Fliss is an IT systems guru by day and a creative writer by night. Which means if you need a complex system explained to you or someone to proofread your writing, Fliss can do it all and probably with a smile on her face the whole time! There is hardly ever an occasion where Fliss says 'no' to a request, even when she has a lot on her plate. Her wickedly-good sense of humour will keep everyone in stitches - espec...ially during difficult times. Fliss has one of the sharpest minds and kindest hearts in the office. And a pretty recognisable laugh. #TheCRCSFamily

02.01.2022 Bruce Ridge Early Childhood Centre embeds community support and provides meaningful, genuine opportunities for children to be active participants in their world. When our centre’s community heard about the Clare Holland House, ACT Hospice expansion, we wondered how we could help. Discussions with children identified that we all like to wear pyjamas when we are feeling sick, which led to the introduction of a pyjama day to show our support, widen our knowledge and fundraise f...or Clare Holland House Project. The day was a success! Everyone dressed in pyjamas and had many opportunities to learn about the cause. Through discussions on the day with the children, we acknowledged that sick patients at hospitals and Clare Holland House need many resources to help them while they are sick. Giving children a voice to share their understandings, they identified that Clare Holland House may like to spend the fundraised money on strawberries, watermelon, medicine, pyjamas and blankets for their patients. It is vital as early childhood educators that we provide children genuine opportunities to be heard - their own and others' ideas, knowledge and theories. This helps a child know they are a valued member of their community, who has influence, understandings and relationships to support their needs, interests and wellbeing now and into the future. As one of the first donations to the cause, BRECC director Lauren Kapper attended the launch of Clare Holland Expansion Project and the Fundraising initiative. If you would like to add to our donations to Clare Holland House, please go to Hands across Canberra website https://www.handsacrosscanberra.org.au/giving/clare-holland/ #TheCRCSFamily

01.01.2022 One of the joys of being an educator is watching the children in your care grow with confidence and joy. We enjoy spending time with the children at our school-age care centres to find out what they would like to do and facilitate ways for them to enjoy their time and enhance their skills. Young Brian* is very talented when it comes to scooter tricks and told our educator Fariha about all the fun he had at the skate park one day. Fariha then suggested they build a skate path at their after-school care at Florey, using materials they could find in the building. Brian* was delighted to show his friends just how talented he was and they even joined him and made an afterschool activity of it! #TheCRCSFamily
