19.01.2022 It has been a long few months here at the memory farm since the Clear Range bushfire hit our community on the 1st of February. But with the help of the community, and after many, many hours of work we are finally getting to the point where the memory farm can reopen for families and individuals to plant and sponsor living memorials. We have made safe the many burnt trees, are about 6km in to the 15kms or so of new fences, and we have rebuilt our two watering/irrigation system...s. Louise, the kids and myself have all buffed up as a result! This past weekend we replanted a demonstration tree line lost in the fire with Japanese Maples. They should grow to about 6m when mature. They have been planted alongside a row of Claret Ash which seemed to be regrowing from their roots.

18.01.2022 Today we were out looking at a forest area on our farm that was devastated by the 1 Feb Clear Range bushfire, when we were delighted to see this little fella. Life is beginning to return! www.capitalregionmemoryfarm.com.au
17.01.2022 Well it’s getting very floral here at the memory farm. We have this lovely plant popping up everywhere. Golden Lilly (Bulbine bulbosa) is an endemic of Australia and is restricted to the eastern half the country. We assume it is prominent this year due to the wet spring!
17.01.2022 The 1st of August marked six months since the Clear Range bushfire devastated the community of Colinton and our farm and business. The six months since the fire have been grueling. We have removed 14km of fire damaged fencing and installed 6kms of new fences (so far), rebuilt stock yards, removed many dangerous trees, planted a new tree line, repaired/replaced two stock watering systems, and cleared two destroyed sheds. We are nearing the half way point in our recovery journe...y. Just another 8kms of new fencing, planting five hundred trees and shrubs (in new tree lines), installing new signage and new front gates to go. Then we can start a deep clean on the house and replace carpets, curtains and other smoke affected things. In spring we will start planting improved pastures. While all sponsored memorial trees and plaques were saved, we have not taken customers while we have made the farm safe for visitors. With spring coming we are also getting close to reopening the Memory Farm! It has been tough psychologically, emotionally and physically. But my overarching memory of the last six months is of kindness. We would like to thank Brindabella Stock Feed and our Peter Fitzgerald who donated and transported hay for our animals immediately after the fire, our neighbours and other volunteers who have helped share the burden of many long hours pulling down and erecting fences, those who donated vet supplies and clothing, Agriwest Cooma and Ben (in Bredbo) who lent us generators, and government and NFPs who have provided services and support. The list goes on. We would especially like to thank Blaze Aid and the Cooma Monaro Council’s recovery team for all their support. With much of the Namadgi national park (to our west) devastated we are currently supporting many native refugees here at the Memory Farm. In a 30 minute period on the weekend we saw two echidnas, ten wombats, a possums, many roos and wallabys, kookaburras, cockatoos, galahs, etc. We even saw a snake (disturbed from hibernation while removing fencing). These were casual sightings made as we went about our own work. We are now raising funds to replant a forest along our Murrumbidgee frontage and to plant connecting nature corridors to where the areas where these native animals are stranded. This is urgently needed. Please search Help our bushfire stranded native animals thrive at gofundme.com.au, or send me a message, if you would like to help. Here I have posted some pictures of the fire damage, our the recovery work so far and some of our native guests.

05.01.2022 Hi Everyone. The Memory Farm has so far steered itself through the fire emergency despite major blazes to the east and the west for almost 10 days now. We evacuated the kids to Canberra mid last week to allow us time to prepare to defend the farm and to patrol for spot fires along the valley starting from embers blowing in and dry lightning. ... With all the smoke around the RFS were worried that fires could start and spread widely before being reported. Landowners were asked to patrol and spot for them. Saturday started calmly before a gale began from the north west. It did not let up for 7 hours. The RFS and local landowners fought hard, but the fires grew and spread despite their efforts. At around 6 pm, just as the fires reached the dense Namadgi national park’s boundary to our west the wind shifted to the south. Fortunately the feared southerly was gentle and the day was saved. We are so blessed to be part of such a great community, and are thankful for our good fortune when so many others have lost so much. Stay safe.
04.01.2022 Another great day here at the Memory Farm. We came across another Echidna this time eating ants. This is the second in two days. We have many stranded native guests who fled to our remaining forested areas saved from February bushfires. Thanks for all the positive comments and likes on this video. 03.01.2022 Many of you have asked how the Memory Farm has faired with the recent fires in our area. The Memory Farm was affected by the Clear Range Fire, started by the Orroral Valley Fire, on Saturday 1st of February. We watched the fire crest the mountains to the west at 4am and reached our boundary about 10.30am. We dowsed the last grass fire at 11pm. A long day!... The memory trees and our cattle faired very well with all surviving. Fire management being another advantage of our rotational grazing system. Many of the unburned paddocks were those grazed in the last two weeks, with the worst damaged in those that had even resting the longest. Of course that means we have no grass for the cattle but we can manage that for a while with emergency fodder. Humans and homestead all okay despite about 70% of the property being blackened. Due to safety reasons the farm will be closed for visitors for a few weeks. We look forward to welcoming guests once safe. If you want to know about your memorial tree please contact me on 0402237357.
