23.01.2022 Please take a container with you when you walk on the beach, and pick some of this carelessly discarded rubbish up.
23.01.2022 Livingstone Shire Council has yet to issue a statement about how kerbside recycling collections are being re-routed after the CQ MRF (Parkhurst recycling facili...ty) fire on 9th November. Rockhampton Regional Council, who like LSC use the MRF, has revealed they are now transporting unsorted loads of the region’s recycling north to Mackay, a 350km trip. Waste and Recycling Councillor Shane Latcham said "Normally, when your kerbside recycling bin is collected it is sent to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) to be sorted by our contractor. This is a privately operated regional facility contracted to sort kerbside recyclables from our region as well as other Central Queensland councils. Recyclables are separated and baled at the MRF, then transported to secondary processors to be made into new products. The fact that there has been no disruption to normal service is an absolute credit to Council’s contractor and our officers who have been working tirelessly to ensure that this hasn’t impacted recycling in our community or come at an expense to Council, he said. For the time being, kerbside recycling loads are being collected and trucked to the MRF in Mackay for sorting while we work through a long-term solution. This situation, however, means that it’s more essential than ever to make sure the right thing is going in the right bin. We don’t want to be giving any rubbish a ride to Mackay just to go to landfill there, so we’re asking for the community to really focus on their recycling at the moment. He cautioned that putting the wrong thing in your bin could put workers in danger. While we’re still investigating the cause of the fire, it’s suspected that the culprit might be a lithium battery which somebody put in their yellow lidded bin, he said. While our trucks and the MRF have safety mechanisms in place there is always a risk that dangerous items like batteries and household chemicals can slip through. There is no excuse for putting items like these in your kerbside recycling. Luckily, no one was injured during this incident. Please save your batteries and drop them off at places like: * Everything Battery on Tanby Road * Capricorn Coast Landcare Group Inc 's Envirolink Office (if shut, please leave at the Yeppoon Community Centre desk). * Battery World in Rockhampton * ALDI Australia
22.01.2022 There were only 9 people at our Landcare Great Northern clean up event today at Merv Anderson Park. However, we had approximately 50kg of rubbish going to landf...ill, and the recycling had already been separated. Thanks to those who turned up, and to Derek for taking the waste to landfill for us. The event was sponsored by Livingstone Shire Council.
21.01.2022 Beach combers and walkers: please keep an eye out for tiny plastic pellets or 'nurdles' on local beaches. These miniature pollutants have been found recently along Farnborough Beach in Yeppoon & have been mailed to Tangaroa Blue. Thank you
19.01.2022 Hi, Malcolm here, and I'd like to thank all those who took the time to attend our AGM on Monday evening. I would also like to apologise to all our good friends at Emu Park Bushcare & Friends of Lammermoor. I had prepared my president's report, in which I thank the two groups for all the good work they have done for our environment over the year (they have done so for a long time). Unfortunately, I got distracted and missed sections of the report when I spoke, including the mention of your groups. At least it is down in the official record of the meeting. Cheers, and hope you all have a good break over the holidays after what has been a stressful year.
18.01.2022 These young Kookaburras will probably benefit foodwise from the disturbance on their patch.
17.01.2022 There is a forecast of good rain this week, so I thought this arvo I'd better try and reduce the infestation of Mother-of-Millions on our Landcare beach site a ...bit more so it doesn't get out of control. This makes 7 bags I've gathered in 3 visits, on top of 7 bags the team collected on the 16th, and whatever Val and husband Dale collected. For such a small area that's a major infestation, and there is still more to get; then we deal with the other weeds. #ReefTrust@awegov
16.01.2022 Hope everyone manages to have a great break with their loved ones, despite everything bad going on.
15.01.2022 We didn't do any environmental work at Landcare today. Instead the volunteers had a well-deserved Xmas brunch down at the beachfront. Last night at the AGM they... entrusted me to be president for another year, and I couldn't hope for a better bunch of people to do it with. I reckon we'll go on to even bigger and better things next year. See more
15.01.2022 'The Beauty' animated short film, directed by Pascal Schelbli, is a poignant journey through oceans that are both stunning and yet irreversibly impacted by human litter: https://vimeo.com/525453396 #PascalSchelbli #shortfilm #litter #pollution #socialmarketing
14.01.2022 Restoring the good work done by Paul Bambrick's Remveg team and neglected since then by LSC.
14.01.2022 This is the 7th nest I've come across on the Farnborough Beach site.
11.01.2022 Todays bird count at our Fig Tree Creek site was down, only 11 native species and a total of 32 birds. On the plus side, at least 8 of the birds were newly fled...ged ones. The best photo of the day was of a feral Spotted Dove. Good news for the day was that 10 years after Alby Wooler and his team first began work on the site, council have finally put a tap in so we don't have to tap into the showground supply with miles of connected hoses See more
11.01.2022 What goes around comes around.
10.01.2022 Another haul of the evil Mother-of-Millions from Farnborough Beach site this morning. An hour at a time is all I can manage in the current heat and humidity. Th...anks to our volunteer Val and her partner for doing an hour and removing more of these weeds as well as a number of Prickly Pear plants, and removing their haul from site. Also to Don for his dedication for keeping the newly planted Pandanus plants watered in the current hot, dry spell. #ReefTrust@awegov
09.01.2022 Can't wait to extend the regeneration work on Farnborough Beach dunes. The site is proving very good at regenerating naturally once we clear the invasive species, despite the dry weather we have experienced.
09.01.2022 More bird photos from our Alby Wooler Park site today
08.01.2022 Another great effort by the team. Special thanks to Don for disposing of the weeds safely and thoroughly.
07.01.2022 Really looking forward to this! Sharing info, and planting seeds for population resillience, alongside a passionate and diverse bunch of people up in the Yeppoo...n/ Rockhampton area. Pandanus Planthoppers have spread rapidly across the region, threatening eastern Queenslands largest remaining unaffected Pandanus populations (Farnborough Beach north to Byfield National Park). Drone Footage: https://youtu.be/T4FZEy5uz5c There's been so much support, many people to thank, for now a big thanks to the crew from Surfrider Foundation and Fitzroy Basin Ascociation for making this event possible!
06.01.2022 Our coordinator with 2 work experience students who worked with us at the old Remveg site at the Information Centre roundabout. The site is looking good, and the 2 youngsters did very well.
05.01.2022 Way to go Tip Top!!! To avoid the 'unavoidable' plastic bread bags, why not support local bakers? Most independent bakers in Livingstone Shire will use paper bags by request, or are happy to place fresh loaves & rolls into reusable fabric bags. To stop bread going dry & stale, store the paper or fabric bag in the freezer & thaw portions as required - will be fine this way for up to a week. Alternatively place into a large airtight container in the freezer (tin bread bins are good).
03.01.2022 One of my most hated weeds is invading one of our beach sites.
01.01.2022 A big thank you to Bethlea for growing these CQ native trees, of which a limited amount remain for giveaway today at the Landcare office. Get in quick!
01.01.2022 I noticed activity in Beaman Park today when I popped down to the shops, so of course I had to have a sticky beak. It was an event called ‘Get Ready Day’ organi...sed by LSC and designed to help the public prepare for the upcoming severe weather season. It was a chance for people to meet with emergency services and Council Disaster Management staff to get advice on coastal hazards and other risks. Being involved with a few committees with council and other organizations and groups, I am impressed with the way our council is working with the community to keep us prepared for the hazards and risks of our volatile summers. Also got to photograph the event mascot, our very own caped crusader Resilient Ricki. See more
01.01.2022 We're hosting a free Electric Vehicle Information Session in May to generate conversation around transportation, currently the third highest emitter of greenhouse gases in Australia. This country remains one of a minority of countries without fuel efficiency, fuel quality and vehicle emissions standards and the only OECD country without an official fuel efficiency target (ICCT 2015)! Transport emissions are produced from the combustion of fuels (like petrol, diesel, aviation ...and bunker fuel) for transportation, including road, rail, domestic aviation, domestic shipping, off-road recreational vehicles and gas pipeline transport. Come and chat to electric vehicle owners, and sales representatives for some local dealerships. If you're interested in participating on the day please email [email protected]. Thanks to Livingstone Shire Council's Yeppoon Community Centre for their support of this community event.
