23.01.2022 They say it takes a village to raise a child and I know it takes more than one person to run a dressage comp. A big thank you to our judges and pencillers. Greg Brown, Lynda Schultz,Therese Brown, Heather Dow, Lloyd Howard, Seneya Thomas & Karen Hawkins. Thank you to Ken Landsberg who is a master at organising helpers, he arranged to have Serena Kase on site as first aid officer, Bill Jackson on gear check and Rob Sanderson, Ken Dickfos & Dan Goodwin built the arena Friday morning, thank you. Also thanks to John Thompson and Paul the caretaker. Thanks also to the Yeppoon Pony Club for the use of their grounds. It was great seeing everyone together after so many years, there was lots of laughter catching up with old friends. Christine

13.01.2022 Due to the uncertainty of the Covid-19 virus we will be postponing our 2020 ODE, we hope to find a date later in the year. We are aware we are under the 500 outside restrictions, our concern is around providing the required medical coverage we need to be able to run our event safely.

11.01.2022 Nominations for our ODE close tomorrow.

10.01.2022 Changes to PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Rules in Eventing Helmets and Body Protectors correctly fitted and worn won’t prevent a fall but they may reduce ...the severity of any consequential injury. For some time now, Eventing has had rules in place requiring that helmets used in all phases of the competition must comply with the standards laid out in Annex N of the eventing rules. Body protectors (compulsory for the XC phase) manufactured after 2009 to the EN13158:2009 standard are recommended. Effective July 1st 2019 the following changes will take place: Helmet Tagging To enable officials to more easily identify those helmets complying with the standards there will be a tagging program introduced beginning July 1st 2019 where compliant helmets will be tagged by officials at events so they can be easily identified. To make the tagging process as easy as possible for members, State Eventing Committees will ensure officials are available at as many events as practical and at other key gatherings such as squads. During the introductory period, July 1st 2019 to January 1st 2020, athletes wearing a helmet that complies with the standards in Annex N to the rules, but has not been tagged will be allowed to ride but will be issued an official advice to have the helmet tagged before riding at their next competition. From January 1st 2020 riders the rules will require that a helmet is both compliant to the standards and is tagged. Should standards change and the Eventing Rules be updated, then the colour of the tags will be changed and a similar phase-in process for the new tags will be adopted. The New Rules will be published as: EA 538.1.1 Protective Headgear - 538.1.1A Helmet Tagging 538.1.1B Helmet Safety Please Remember- Helmets should be correctly fitted and fastened. Athletes are strongly encouraged to check their helmet regularly and replace it immediately after a fall in which it is impacted. Body Protectors The use of a body protector in the XC phase of eventing has been a requirement under the rules for some time, as has the recommended standard for these devices. Effective July 1st 2019 the rules will be changed to read Body protectors are compulsory for Cross-Country. A body protector manufactured after 2009 to the EN13158:2009 standard is mandatory. Please check your body protector now to ensure it is marked as complying to the EN13158:2009 standard. The changed rule will be published as: EA 538.3.1 Cross-Country Body Protector Athletes may have their body protector checked for compliance before going XC These changes are designed to assist in ensuring your safety. Safety Curiosities The intense scrutiny of results required to implement the Equiratings program has thrown up some interesting information. For the first three months of the year: > Andrew Cooper has amassed staggering 13 Cross Country runs clear of jumping faults. > Maya Basson has finished on her dressage score (FOD) on four occasions. > War Hawk recorded five consecutive clear cross country runs. 03.01.2022 How To Kick Self-Criticism To The Curb (Once And For All!) by Annette Paterakis For some reason, we tend to believe that in order to improve, we need to be crit...icizing ourselves constantly. In my opinion, however, this does not work at all. It’s not helpful for two reasons. One, because you don’t get any feedback on how to improve or make things better, and two, because at the same time, your confidence is going down the drain. Want to break the cycle? We do too. Here are a few ways to ditch the negative self-talk and build your self-esteem. 1. Let go of perfection: Constantly striving for perfection is the biggest demoralizer imaginable. It results in becoming afraid to make mistakes and self-criticizing your every move. Setting the bar this high and not allowing for any mistakes will most certainly tee you up for failure. Instead, let go of the perfect image and start working on improvement! 2. Feel your horse: When listening to your own inner chatter, you can’t be in the moment, feeling your horse at the same time. As we can only perform one task at a time with 100 percent attention at a given moment; you are either thinking, or, you are feeling. So next time you catch yourself wondering off into the land of defeating thoughts, take a moment to recognize it and go back to feeling your horse underneath you. 3. Stop comparing yourself to others: If you want to feel defeated, insecure, or not good enough, go ahead and compare yourself to othersit’s a great way to feed the monkey mind. In case, however, you’d rather stay optimistic and confident, recognize when you’re listening to unhelpful critics and refocus on your own journey. Asking negative questions like, Why can’t I just _____? will only provoke negative answers. Instead, ask yourself, What can I learn from this situation? or, What am I most grateful for? Answering these questions will fill your heart and mind with gratitude and lovethe best antidotes to negative emotions and feelings. 4. Practice acceptance: When we get very angry with ourselves for not being perfect or making that mistake we, in essence, aren’t being accepting of the situation. Practice the habit of acceptance. Or, at the very least, challenge the belief that athletes need to be extremely hard on themselves in order to succeed. By interviewing top riders, I have learned that they are a lot more relaxed about making mistakes than riders who are not at the top. 5. Stop judging: The other day, a client of mine described how she would tell herself off during her course after making a mistake, saying things like idiot or I’m so stupid. We talked about how this habit of judging herself was standing in the way of her staying focused in the moment, and how it resulted in her making even more mistakes. Notice how your judgments are standing in the way of your ability to be positive and focused. 6. Be kind: Would you ever be this critical or negative to your best friend...read more: https://www.noellefloyd.com//how-to-kick-self-criticism-to

02.01.2022 What Happens When You Fall During Cross Country So, let’s imagine it’s cross country day, and you’re in the start box, ready to go. Your horse has been a little... fresh this morning, and you’re both full of nerves and adrenaline. The starter counts you down, AND YOU’RE OFF! But, you were right to be nervous; you’re not seeing his stride, and get in close to jump six. Really close. And... Splat. Lying on the floor, the wind knocked out of you, what happens next? Well, that’s where we step in; your event incident management team. Now, chances are, you’ve been a part of this team before yourself - all of our jump judges are volunteers, and often helping out between rides. If so, you already know what to expect. For the rest of you, here’s some insight... (jump judges all get to watch THIS video to help them out: https://vimeo.com/231660710) On seeing you fall, the jump judge will pick up their radio and call out to you - ‘Can you get up?’ ‘Can you make you’re way over to me?’ Please answer; it really tells us a lot about how sick you are, and how much of a response we need to organise! If they don’t get anything back from you, the radio call will go out to our paramedic and doctor team to come and assess you. Remember, if you’re lying on the floor, not speaking because you’re angry at yourself/your horse/the jump/the weather, but you’re actually fine, you could be diverting our team away from someone else who really needs them. When the doctor or paramedic gets to you (this has been the standard at many events for years, and will be mandated from January 2020), they’ll ask a series of questions and make an assessment of your injuries. This will allow them to start appropriate treatment on scene and arrange for further care/moving as necessary...read more: https://www.equestrian.org.au//what-happens-when-you-fall- Equestrian NSW Equestrian Queensland Equestrian Victoria Equestrian South Australia Inc Equestrian Western Australia Equestrian Tasmania Equestrian Northern Territory #eventing #safereventing #equestriansafety #ridewithus #fortheloveofthehorse
