The most common scam is still the fake tax debt phone scam, bu...t were seeing an increase of fake refund or refund for a fee scams, as well as email and SMS scams enticing people to download a file or open an attachment. Here are our top five tips for staying safe this tax time: Know what to protect. This includes details like full name, date of birth, address, bank account and credit card info, tax file number, passwords, driver's licence and passport details. Keep your personal info secure and remind friends and family to do the same. Once stolen, it can be very difficult to get back! Be suspicious of requests for personal details. To check if a call, email or SMS is really from us, phone our dedicated hotline on 1800 008 540. Know the legitimate ways to make tax payments. We dont accept payment via pre-paid gift cards or directly into non-ATO bank accounts. Warn your family and friends if they share too much on social media. You generally cant claim the cost of driving from home to work, except in limited circumstances. You can claim the cost of protective clothes youre required to wear (eg steel-capped boots). You cant claim a deduction for plain clothes (eg t-shirt, jeans) even if your boss tells you to wear them. You can claim the cost of tools or equipment youre required to buy for work. If you also use your tools or equipment for private purposes, you cant claim a deduction for that portion of use. You can claim the work-related portion of your phone expenses if you have to make calls or send texts for work.
