21.01.2022 CARA’S RESPONSE TO TRYING TIMES I thought I’d post as I’ve had lots of emails and messages of concern for me and how my business is fairing during these challenging times. Thank you, this really means a lot... I totally understand that many people are nervous to travel right now and Travel Agents like myself, are doing their best to help. Throughout my career Travel Agents have worked through 9/11, SARS, Swine flu, Bird flu, Mad cows disease, airline collapses, earthquakes, bombings and more. It will continue to be tough for a while but we will come out the other side okay. Aussies are travellers and we’ll all be hitting the road again soon enough. In the meantime, many airlines and suppliers are being as flexible and accommodating as they can be, remembering they all have staff to pay, who have families to feed. Many travel insurance policies don’t cover this kind of thing as these are unprecedented times. I’m still swanning around Kenya so it’s the amazing Support Team at MTA Head Office that are dealing with the brunt of it all at the moment and to these amazing people I am eternally grateful Plus I am in touch with most of my clients via email or text to try and do what I can. Go hug a Travel Agent and be glad if you booked through one - when the going gets tough, it’s good to have us on your side. Enjoy these photos of Kenya, up close and amazing. 04.01.2022 BEING A TRAVEL AGENT DURING COVID-19 Well my industry has been the hardest hit right now, (pretty sure this statement would be undisputed), and I’ve worked through cancelled trips for many clients and still have many more in June/July. If the BAN goes into August/September, then I’ll be working through those next months, and it looks like the numbers will be similar. During these times I am reminded of a saying that goes something like this... Work like you don’t need the money, Love like you have never been hurt, And dance like no one is watching. The gist of it means, just work with integrity, remember people you loved will hurt you and don’t let them beat you down, and remember to have fun along the way. So, I guess that sums up my life right now. I do work for no financial gain / benefit. I’m a sole trader, so my family are not doing as well as we normally do. I have been treated badly by some I would not have expected this from. And all the while I remember I have an amazing and supportive partner. And I am so blessed that he gave me 2 beautiful children. These children trust that their father and I will get them through this. So we have no choice but to do this, and we will. A long-term client asked me a few days ago why I don’t just close up shop like so many of my colleagues (and no judgement here as Travel Agents are being made out to be villains right now). The question shocked me. It never even occurred to me that this was an option. Every single client I have, I have either personally met, or they have been referred to me by a trusted and valued existing client, friend or relative. To close up shop, to me, would be to betray the confidence of the person who trusted me enough to refer their friend, relative or colleague. So, call it insanity, but I will soldier on until the very last client has their application put in for a refund/credit or for whatever they are entitled to. I will argue for each client’s entitlements, even those that have not been very nice right nowbecause I don’t know what stress they may be under. In the long run, however my business ends up, at least I will know that I tried my very best. With my integrity, my heart and my soul. And if that isn’t enoughwell, I can live with this. If my advice is worth anything, I would say to each and every person on the planetApproach everything with a kind heart, and you will always be okay. All my love, and I wish you the very very best in life. Till we travel again.
