25.01.2022 Now that the Volanti airframe development is coming to an end the engineering team at Carbonix are turning their attention to the integration of payload options. In keeping with our philosophy of using technology to support and shorten design maturation times we are employing 3D printing to help with the installation of a Silvus SC4200E is a 22 MIMO radio into the airframe. Taking information directly from the 3D CAD model and creating spatial models that can be slaved onto ...the airframe allows us to identify at an early stage any constraints we may face prior to making the necessary modifications to the airframe. 20.01.2022 At Carbonix we utilise a wide range of analysis tools as part of our calculated approach towards product design and development. Hand calculations and number-crunching, paired with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's open source Vehicle Sketch Pad (VSP) modelling software, have provided us with a good understanding on the Domani’s manoeuvrability and handling in flight. This methodology has shown the Domani to be a stable platform at the extreme edges of th...e flight envelope, simulating high roll rates as well as desirable pitch and yaw authority. Next steps; validation of the new control surfaces on a flying prototype, THEN Mars... or an optimised Domani Fuel to market. What are your thoughts? Any VSP-veterans out there? 19.01.2022 When creating new solutions to any problem, we step through a process that starts with an idea, resolves it into a definite plan, then puts it to the test in the real world. We use many tools along the way: Pen and paper for initial sketches, mathematical models to hone in on candidate designs, manufacturing processes to give our brainchild concrete form.... At Carbonix we have evolved very specialised methodologies to make lightweight aerodynamic structures behave optimally in operation. A carbon fibre wing, for example, experiences aerodynamic forces (lift and drag) that cause it to flex. The deflected shape changes details of the airflow, altering the forces it exerts. Using a combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) we can characterise real world behaviour and tailor the laminate design to best effect. We then validate predictions by testing an actual part in the real world. Results of physical testing feed back into the digital models to refine them. Last year, with the support of a CDIC Capability Grant, we created unique new facilities for testing composite parts as well as electronics. Get in touch to discuss your design, testing, and optimisation needs for vehicles that fly, float, or roll. [email protected] www.carbonix.com.au

17.01.2022 To ensure that our aircraft are protected in service we have designed our own sturdy carry case that keeps the airframe safe from vibration, dust and moisture as well as shocks. We use high density foam to individually secure the parts and have designed the case to minimise space and weight. To help reduce time setting up in the field the parts are assembled in sequence as they are removed from the case as well as carrying the payload and manuals. It has been designed to be ...loaded into a UTE (or truck if you are American) which is often the preferred vehicle of choice for operators. 15.01.2022 Another Australian designed and manufactured carbon fibre wing skin ready for curing. At Carbonix we are experts in extracting the maximum flight endurance from our UAV’s so that our customers can do what they do best, stay in the air longer to gather more data. We do this by producing airframes that use the latest in aerospace material technology such as carbon fibre composites that finds the right balance between weight, strength and durability. Having worked extensively wi...th resin suppliers over the last 5 years we have developed our own in-house techniques to produce infused high temperature epoxy/carbon moulds. We are proud of the fact that 100% of the design maturation process (CAD, CFD and stress analysis) and manufacturing is carried out in Australia employing local people in sustainable jobs. 13.01.2022 Designing, building and operating fully autonomous UAV’s (or anything for that matter) is not for the faint hearted. At Carbonix we foster a culture of moderate risk-taking that develops positive emotions such as trust, curiosity, confidence, and inspiration across the whole team. Taking cues from the major aerospace primes and the 'industry standard', we have adopted the Integrated Product Development Team (IPDT) model for the solving of complex problems. This has proven to ...be successful in expediting the overall development time and airframe entry into service for the Carbonix fleet, whilst retaining the quality and engineering attention to detail. Carbonix's IPDT setup has also proven to be beneficial in allowing us to pivot and navigate through these challenging times. We utilise software tools to make this model work - be it remotely or in person (pictured below), such as Atlassian's Confluence, Slack and Microsoft Project Professional. Reaching out to our network to hear your thoughts on the tools you have used to make working-as-a-team work in the current climate. 09.01.2022 At Carbonix’s state of the art manufacturing facility we have full in-house Carbon Fibre manufacturing capability, including tooling design, fibre cutting and placement, curing and finishing. Over the last 10 years we have developed many industry leading techniques, originally developed for the America's Cup sailing yachts and now applied to the next generation of aerial drones. The engineering team at Carbonix have developed both high-performance metal and carbon moulds for ...our production Volanti airframes, and our tooling is based on full 3D CAD models that utilise robotic cutters. This ensures precision accuracy as all components are pre-fitted and checked in virtual space before any material is cut. If you would like to know more, please contact us on [email protected] 0412 127 388 www.carbonix.com.au

05.01.2022 At Carbonix we have developed specialised processes for creating complex components in pre-impregnated carbon fibre material. The example shown is the mounting pod for the VTOL electric motor on the Volanti airframe. To manufacture this component, we developed a bladder-pressure closed mould method that allows us to make the part in one piece with no secondary bonding. This ensures the parts have structural integrity which is critical for aerospace components in addition to ...maintaining a tight dimensional tolerance for aerodynamic and assembly requirements. If you have any composite manufacturing requirements, please get in touch with us at [email protected] 0412 127 388 www.carbonix.com.au

04.01.2022 Composites, manufacture and Structural Design. At Carbonix we optimise our resources in design and development work as we strive for high quality and unique solutions. At the core of our engineering work, we utilise advanced composite materials and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to model critical aspects of our drones. The pods in the Volanti connects the body of the drone to the tail, acting as a critical support structure, apart from housing the VTOL powertrain components....
