25.01.2022 CELEBRATING BOOK WEEK...every week!! DAY 3 of 5 reasons why you should read to children every day! 3. Books are mirrors and windows!... Nearly 30 years ago, children’s literature professor, Rudine Sims Bishop, wrote about how books can be windows, through which we see other worlds. These windows can become sliding doors when we use our imaginations and become part of them. Books can also be mirrors, when we see our own lives and experiences in them. In this way, they reaffirm our place in the world. Books can help children see into other worlds and cultures. Children need both types of books to understand that people come from different cultures and have different ways of thinking and doing things. Books can show that children of all cultures are valued in society. Children who never see themselves represented in books may feel marginalised. Unfortunately, the majority of books feature white children, and for the majority feature boys over girls, boys being the hero, so many children only experience books as windows. At Cardinia Lakes ELC we audit the books we read to children and those we have on our book shelves to ensure diversity and equality. Two books we recommend that celebrate Indigenous children include Big Rain Coming and Kick with My Left Foot (which is also a great book about left and right). Head to @yarnstrongsista and @kooricurriculum for great books and resources for your children or classroom. #bookweek #curiouscreatureswildminds #readeveryday #booksbuildbrains #earlychildhood #kindergarten #books #literacy #earlyliteracy

Did you answer yes? Head to the next question! Are you able to work with all age groups, 5 days a week, with shift times between 6:30am to 7:00pm? You must answer yes to all parts of that question. 16.01.2022 BOOK WEEK!! Day 4 of 5 reasons why you should read to children every day. 4. Books can counter stereotypes.... Children learn gender stereotypes from a very young age. Research shows by the age of six, girls are already less likely than boys to think girls are really, really smart and they begin to avoid activities thought to be for really, really smart children. Picture books can challenge these and other stereotypes. Reading books that portray atypical behaviours such as girls playing with trucks or with girls in traditional male roles such as being doctors, scientists or engineers, can change children’s beliefs and activities. Iggy Peck, Architect; Rosie Revere, Engineer; and Ada Twist, Scientist are very popular. Sofia Valdez, Future Prez has also just been released. The City of Monash Council in Melbourne has created a list of children’s picture books that promote gender equality and challenge gender stereotypes. This includes one of my favourite books, The Paperbag Princess, who saves herself from a dragon and decides not to marry the Prince after he complains she is a mess. At Cardinia Lakes ELC we have a culturally and gender diverse team. Which gives us a diverse lens that keeps us in check when we resource not only our books, but all that we engage the children in. A great teaching resource is The Anti-Bias Curriculum which is just about to launch its latest edition. Head over to @multiverseaus to order your copy! It’s an every educator MUST have. #bookweek #books #breakingstereotypes #genderequality #earlychildhood #antibiascurriculum #kindergarten

15.01.2022 ALERT: Today has been declared a high alert for Thunderstorm Asthma due to the high pollen count and high winds. We will be be avoiding the outdoors today at our ELC to avoid any reactions. What is thunderstorm asthma? Thunderstorm asthma can happen suddenly to people in spring or summer when there is a lot of pollen in the air and the weather is hot, dry, windy and stormy. ... People with asthma and/or hay fever need extra protection to avoid thunderstorm asthma between September and January in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. This means using preventer medicine every day and always having a reliever inhaler (blue puffer) ready. See your doctor to get the best asthma and/or hay fever medication plan. Spring thunderstorm weather can cause pollen grains to burst into tiny pieces and the wind then blows them around us. When people breathe in these tiny pieces of pollen they can get deep inside the lungs and trigger an asthma attack. Spring weather can also lead to breathing problems for people who get seasonal hay fever. People who wheeze and sneeze with hay fever from pollens during spring are more likely to get thunderstorm asthma even if they haven't had asthma before. Please take care and. Don’t forget to take your puffers everywhere with you over this period. Check that your puffers are in date and that you have plenty left. Stay safe.

15.01.2022 The team at Cardinia Lakes ELC wishes all the new Prep’s an exciting first day tomorrow as they continue their learning journey in Primary School! A first day poem: The night before school is exciting and fun. There are always so many things to be done.... Your clothes are ready, your backpack is too. Your classroom will be full of fun things to do. Lots of questions will go through your mind. All types of thoughts of every kind. Sometimes we get the jitters in our tummy deep, which makes it hard to fall fast asleep. So here are some magic words just for you, to remember for the whole year through. Tonight before you go to bed, remember these words as you lay down your head. You are a star that shines so bright, you’re kind and funny, a pure delight. You’ll be sure to make many new friends, and at the end of the day want the fun not to end. I hope these words help you sleep through the night, and wake up in the morning feeling fresh and bright. A special shout out to all the families with first day tummy jitters too! We’ll all be thinking of you. Good luck!!! (*adapted from the Magic Confetti Poem)

04.01.2022 Where is Green Toby....I mean Sheep? DAY 2 of 5 reasons why you should read to your child everyday... 2. Reading books can increase children’s maths and science skills:... Picture books show children maths and science concepts through a story. This helps children grasp the concepts easier. Some books, like ‘How Many Legs’ and ‘How Big is a Million’, explicitly explore concepts such as numbers. Other stories, like the Three Little Pigs, have concepts embedded in them. Children can learn about the properties of materials when adults talk about the strength of hay, sticks and bricks. A study in the Netherlands found kindergarten children who were read picture books, and were engaged in discussions of the maths concepts in the books, increased their maths performance, compared to a control group of children who weren’t read these books. #bookweek #readeveryday #earlychildhood #kindergarten #reading #readingisfundamental #curiouscreatureswildminds #letsread

01.01.2022 BOOK WEEK!! Day 5 of 5 reasons why you should read to children every day. 5. Having access to and reading more books increases your educational outcomes. ... A study that looked at data from 27 countries, including Australia, found children growing up in homes with many books got three years more education than children from bookless homes. This was independent of their parents’ education, occupation and class. Adults need to model good reading habits and their enjoyment of reading. Instilling in children a love of reading can be the best present we ever give. At Cardinia Lakes ELC we have a book exchange where books can be swapped or borrowed to read, for all our centre families. #bookweek #books #earlychildhood #kindergarten #curiouscreatureswildminds #readtochildreneveryday #readingisfundamental #readingispriceless
