25.01.2022 Can I have a cookie? my 5-year-old asked, motioning toward the display of baked goods at a neighborhood potluck. No, sweetie. You just had a popsicle," I re...sponded. But everyone else is having a cookie! she insisted, suddenly red-faced and furious. No, they aren't," I countered. But someone, somewhere is having a cookie! Well, that’s probably true, but you aren’t. As you can imagine, my response was... not exactly what she wanted to hear. For the next hour, my 5-year-old proceeded to beg, cry, sulk, and stare me down from across the cud-de-sac. And, not for one second did I consider rewarding her behavior with a cookie. As a parent, I understand that I need to set limits for my daughter and teach her that she cannot always have what she wants, when she wants it. That said, I completely understand how hard and confusing and frustrating this must be for her how bitterly the word NO stings. NO you can’t stay up later (even though you don’t feel tired yet). NO you can’t have that toy (even though you asked nicely). NO you can’t jump on the furniture or cut your own hair or dive off the roof into the pool (even though it looks fun). On the one hand, I am telling her to make her own big girl choices; and on the other, I am saying, NO. Stop. Not like that. Imagine having so little control over your life. Imagine hearing the world NO ten times a day, every day. Toys cost money, candy is unhealthy, sleep is important, but, as a little kid, you don’t know all that. What you DO KNOW is that your parents are standing in the way of your good time. As an adult, I rarely hear NO. I can eat snacks, watch TV, and stay up late. I am in control of me. If someone tried to tell me what to do, I would not take kindly to it. My guess is most of us wouldn’t. The other day I was told I couldn’t bring outside food into my gym cafeteria, and I was outraged. What kind of a crazy policy is that?! I yelled. Not my finest moment. And while I was in the middle of my adult tantrum, I thought of my daughter and her cookie (or what my husband cleverly refers to as Cookiegate) and I experienced an actual aha moment. Hearing NO sucks at any age. So when your kid has a meltdown over something he or she cannot have, try to remember that hearing NO isn’t easy. And it's even harder for a young child who is still developing his or her logic and reasoning skills. To my daughter I say, I TOTALLY GET IT. I know you wanted that cookie and why you reacted the way you did. My answer is still NO, but I do understand how hard that word is to hear.

12.01.2022 For those about to plan for The NDIS . Here are some resources to help with your plan. 1. Start with the blue poster and have a quick look. It will explain ho...w to use the coloured wheels 2. Write down what you've done in the past month, what you've spent on disability supports, continence aids, taxi fares - remember to include whether you currently have mobility allowance 3. Watch the video about developing your first NDIS plan. https://www.ndis.gov.au/participants/firstplan.html There are also some resources on this page that might be helpful. 4. Look for other resources online, especially if you have a peak body (Down syndrome Australia, Spinal Cord Injuries Australia, eg) who might have other 'pre-planning resources'. Here's a great resource by WA Individualised Services. http://waindividualisedservices.org.au//WAIS-A4_Preparing- 5. Here's an example about how you can do group planning with people you know or people who support you. You can use our Community Planning Poster with the Community wheel - put the file on a thumb drive and take it to Officeworks to print out at 'plan print' size (A0) in black and white. It will cost less than five dollars. Or make your own on butchers paper and ask people to contribute. Good luck with your plan!

06.01.2022 It's hard to believe we are still discovering new species of mammals - but it just happened! There are now two more reasons to love Australia. Meet the newest m...embers of the 'Greater Glider'. The greater glider is a possum-sized marsupial living in the forests of eastern Australia, squeezing into tree hollows during the day and at night soaring up to 100 metres through the air searching for its favourite eucalyptus leaves. And due to the fact that these fluffy little fur-balls are on the 'extinctions' list, makes this find even more remarkable. Connect with Nature! See more
