16.01.2022 Want to know how to compare protein sources based on the price of protein...? Heres a quick a simple way to work out what is most cost-effective. Example: Lupins @ $500/t vs Peas @ $400/t Lupins 32% protein vs Peas 24% protein... 1) Convert to dry matter. This step is essentially if you are comparing high moisture products such as pumpkins, grape marc etc. Given both peas and lupins will have very similar Dry Matter (DM) this step is not as crucial for comparison, however I will show you the maths. The example is based on 90% DM (=0.9) Lupins - $500/0.9 = $555/t on DM basis Peas - $400/0.9 = $444/t on DM basis 2) Convert $/t to c/kg by dividing by 1000 Lupins - 55c/kg Peas - 44c/kg 3) Work out cost per kg of protein by dividing by protein content of feed Lupins - 55c/32% protein = $1.72. Each kilogram of protein in lupins costs $1.72 Peas - 44c/24% protein = $1.83. Each kilogram of protein in peas costs $1.83. Therefore lupins are still better value at the higher price of $500/t because they are much higher protein than. You will also require less when adding to your grain mix. This is a simple way to compare but does not take ito account any anti-nutritional factors from various protein sources. Cheap is not always the most cost - effective A similar method is also available to compare the energy value of feeds - that post will be coming soon! I hope you are all doing ok in the tough conditions

14.01.2022 The Australian kelpies origins have long been shrouded in mystery, but new genetics research has found some vital answers to the iconic working dogs ancestry.
14.01.2022 As silo’s are emptied out prior to harvest, a recent question was asked about feeding mouldy grains/legumes to stock and if it was safe for them to eat... my absolute first preference is no, however as a farmer growing our own grains, legumes and hay for livestock sometimes it’s unavoidable and who wants to waste feed with ‘only a little bit of mould’ right! Sheep, cattle and goats have a rumen full of microbes that can detoxify most mycotoxins (mycotoxins are produced by t...he moulds and the cause of illness and/or deaths) and carry on without a worry, however there are 2 caveats on this... 1) the mycotoxin load, what is the proportion of mouldy feed being consumed? In terms of legumes, it is usually a smaller part of the ration and it’s likely you may get away with no ill effects that you can see (there may be hidden effects such as reduced growth rates or poor conception) 2) how healthy is the rumen environment? The most noticeable effect will be seen in feedlot diets where there is possibly already sub clinical acidosis occurring and an unbalanced, unhealthy rumen environment. There are no good microbes to detoxify those mycotoxins! So consider the mycotoxin load, monitor manure to determine rumen health status and for extra insurance use a mycotoxin binder. Bentonite has been used as a binder for years but can also bind up some minerals in the process of ‘binding’. In the process of developing and formulating the VitaMinBuf Lamb feedlot concentrates I’ve already taken into consideration the need to reduce the effects of mycotoxins in home grown feeds and have used one of the best and most effective binders on the market. So as well as creating a healthy rumen environment you have the added security of a mycotoxin binder as well! For more info check out - https://www.biomin.net/species/ruminants/mycotoxin-binders/ Best wishes for an excellent harvest! May your silos and sheds be full

01.01.2022 Why this tray of can save me money... This morning I took faecal samples from a mob of twin bearing ewes with lambs to be weaned in a week or so. Why? For the $45 it will cost for the WEC and another $20 for a larval differentiation it will assist me in my decision making in a whole lot of ways- here’s a few... 1) will the ewes need to be drenched as well as the lambs? If so, then this job can happen at weaning time, which will save me time and labour. Plus the sheep go on...to fresh paddocks which will reduce potential new worm burden if the fresh paddock. 2) what drench will I use? Specifically requesting a ‘larval diff’ will help me to be specific and more effective in the drench I choose. Some worms are more sensitive to different ‘active’ ingredients than others... 3) the number will tell me the worm burden of the paddock/s and perhaps they will need to be rested longer to reduce the worm burden... A WEC will help you be more cost effective and help reduce drench resistance of your sheep and a larval diff will let you be strategic in your decision making. Some tips for taking your sample. 1) fresh is best! 2) fill up the tray to reduce air in the sample. Air will dry the manure and potentially give an inaccurate result. 3) post early in the week so the samples arrive as fresh as possible. It’s mail day for me today so I made sure the samples were taken first thing this morning. Most labs will post out kits with Reply Paid post packs which will also save you money and time!
01.01.2022 Fantastic result at Forbes!! At least the high prices received will help towards the feed and labour bills
