17.01.2022 Jack from Swinburne University asks: Whats the best way for students to find relevant work experience in their chosen field whilst still studying? Kateas Advice: Many universities offer work integrated learning (WIL) subjects within the curriculum, these generally take the form of an industry placement, project or internship and I highly recommend this option. ... Where WIL is not available at your university or within your course, research large companies with graduate programs, they often offer vacation employment or internships directly. These are however very highly sort after and competitive to get into. Another option is to try to find casual or project based employment in a company that you might like to join in the future, even if the work is unrelated to your professional field. Many students have joined organisations in casual customer service or administration roles ultimately to get a graduate role within that organisation. Finally take a broad definition of experience, this can include volunteering, training, study abroad, and academic projects. Employers will class this experience as relevant where you can demonstrate it relates to your chosen field.

While we have seen an increase in unemployment due to Covid-19, currently the national jobless rate is predicted to increase to 11% when April figures are published. Looking at this positively it means about 9 in 10 people still have jobs. Graduate roles may be harder to come by, however, your chances of employment are increased if you prepare well for interviews, monitor job boards such as Seek and Grad Connect, prepare a great LinkedIn profile and regularly visit company career pages. Be flexible consider joining an organisation part-time or take a reasonable job in your ideal company as a step to gaining your perfect one.
