Competing for the first time at Belmont on a Saturday, Derrick was given the task of partnering the Fred Kersley-trained Resistance in the Crown Perth Handicap (1600m).

19.01.2022 Apprentice jockey Kate Southam has made the decision to relocate to Perth after a short stint in North Queensland. The 27-year-old picked up a Queensland offer with trainer Carl Spry after riding Keep Your Feet at Ascot last June. Kate booted home 12 winners while away at McKay, Cairns, Townsville, Atherton, Innisfail and Home Hill.... It’s a full turnaround for Kate who has not been shy to travel and broaden her riding experience across Australia. The 17 year old was granted her license to ride by Racing and Wagering Western Australia - RWWA a week ago, and continues a large band of young riders to set their footprint on WA racing this season.
18.01.2022 Exciting news - Perth Racing and the Carbine Club of WA have announced the Apprentice Jockey Support Fund, providing $20k annually to support WA Apprentice Jockeys. These funds will help support WA Apprentices training to become licensed jockeys. Apprentices can be nominated by industry participants or by applying at perthracing.com.au

10.01.2022 Our Apprentice Jockeys were privileged to train at the West Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) for apprentice training this week. They completed a specifically designed fitness and pool recovery session delivered by a WAIS Strength and Conditioning coach in the elite athlete gym which was then followed by a Building High Performing Athlete Wellbeing training that focused on managing change as an elite athlete and within racing. Jockeys are professional sports people and par...tnering with WAIS allows our apprentices to expand their knowledge and understanding in a broader sporting context and work towards becoming the best jockeys they can be. 09.01.2022 A new name will soon join the riding ranks in WA. Hannah Fitzgerald has been granted her license to ride by Racing and Wagering Western Australia - RWWA officials this afternoon. Fitzgerald took part in her first trial last November and is based at trainer Brett Popes Pinjarra stable....
