22.01.2022 This post is not about career but life is not just about our work. Everything that happens makes us who we are. We have recently learnt that our son has a sensory processing disorder. The great thing is that now we know we are working with him to address some of the challenges that make things harder for him than for other children. It has also been useful to have an explanation for some of the things that we have found so frustrating about our son's behaviour since he arrive...d in our lives. Yesterday I was listening to an audio book called The Out of Synch Child which is aimed to teach the reader about the disorder and provide guidance for helping our children. As I listened I found myself bawling my eyes out. I realised that my expectations of our son have at times been too much for him, they talked about the need for early intervention (3-4 years old) for the best results and I felt like I'd let him down as he nears 9, and then I remembered all the times I have said to him, "Why can't you do this when other children your age can?" He's not those children! Today I am committed to doing all that I can to help our son navigate this world and thrive while also being committed to forgiving myself because I am always doing my best and am willing to grow for the benefit of all of those I care about and myself. Is there anything you need to forgive yourself for today?

15.01.2022 One of the things that really warms my heart is seeing men in a coffee shop with their little person(s) or doing the school drop off/pickup. 12.01.2022 One of the best ways we can research and access occupations is through conversations with others. There are so many opportunities for this, whether it's in the checkout queue, at the school gate or sitting next to someone in the doctor's waiting room. Your questions could include: * What does a day in your role involve? * What do you love most about the role? *How family friendly is the role/industry?... * What skills and characteristics make someone successful? *What is a typical study/training path for the role? What advice would you give someone thinking about this occupation? Go and have some fun with this!

11.01.2022 When was the last time that you attended a professional development event ladies? To thrive in the world of work we need to be a lifelong learner. The options are endless. You could attend a conference in your field or even pop along to one of the myriad of different Meetup groups out there which can be free or low cost. As well as growing your skills, there is a high likelihood you will grow your network (and they are the gateway to everything). Here I am debriefing my notes from the Professional Speakers Australia annual convention last weekend, and enjoying the awards dinner (another great aspect of lots of conferences).

11.01.2022 What an interesting video - it turns out that monkeys recognise when reward is unequal. I wonder what would have happened if women had responded this way to pay inequality :)

03.01.2022 As this article suggests, we still have a long way to go when it comes to the different expectations we place on men and women and their respective roles at home and at work. 01.01.2022 If there's something that truly warms my heart it's seeing more and more hands-on dads out and about. I couldn't help sharing this with Jamie who I bumped into on his way to work and childcare last week. Jamie's comment that he couldn't expect to have a child and that be the end of it was like music to my ears. Big shout out to Jamie and all the other awesome dads out there making it possible for their significant others to combine family and career.
