25.01.2022 We are recruiting new doggy donors for our community blood bank! If you think your brave boy or girl might be a potential life-saver, please read on! WHY DOES CARE NEED A BLOOD BANK? Just like human emergency rooms, CARE sees numerous trauma cases, as well as pets with bleeding disorders and cancer. Many of these animals are in need of lifesaving blood transfusions. Regular blood donations by healthy donors means that we can maintain an adequate supply of blood products an...d save more lives. Our program veterinarians are members of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) and the American Association of Veterinary Blood Banks, and we work to maintain the highest standards of care for both our donors and recipients. WHY USE VOLUNTEER DONORS? We promote the use of volunteer donors because we strongly believe that saving the life of one dog should not occur at the expense or wellbeing of another. Our blood donors live in loving, private homes within the community. IS MY DOG ELIGIBLE TO BE A DONOR? In order to enrol in our donor program, your dog must meet the following eligibility criteria: - Aged between 2 and 6 years. - Weight of 25kg or more. - A calm, friendly demeanour. - Known history of good health. - Has never had a blood transfusion. - Fully vaccinated. - Regularly wormed. - Desexed. - Able to participate in regular donations at CARE (up to 4 times per year).
