01.01.2022 Despite the mildly panic inducing headline, this article explains this issue very well. Statistically speaking, montelukast an incredibly safe medication with a rare but serious side effect that patients should be aware of, but not alarmed about. This medication has been used safely by millions of children without any negative events and comparitively has very few side effects. Psychiatric side effects have been only being reported (not confirmed) in around 1-2 hundred cases.... This article does highlight the importance of speaking to your pharmacist periodically about any medication you or your children are taking, whether new or not. The biggest take home message from this mildly alarmist piece of reporting is to be aware of the highly remote risk this medication poses, but do not discontinue it without speaking to your doctor as the risks of abrupt withdrawal to your child's respiratory health are far greater and far more likely.
