22.01.2022 Its fantastic news that our gyms are open again and we can start to get back to normal exercise regimes. As we all head back to using equipment we haven’t seen for a few months its important to reintroduce activity gradually if you want to avoid an untimely injury. Injury occurs when you change the stress on your body too much or too quickly for your tissues to adapt and repair. This can happen to anyone, at any age or level of fitness or training experience. Read on for som...e TIPS AND TRICKS TO PREVENT INJURY Preparation Write down a list of exercises you have regularly done over COVID and those that you have not done at all. Make a plan for a gradual introduction to how many training sessions a week you want to attend or, choose to make some of your training days recovery exercise and stretching only until your body gets acclimatised. Think about scaling options for exercises you have not been doing before you hit the gym and be ready to discuss with your trainer/ gym instructor. Be a number nerd - know how many pullups/push ups/burpees etc you have successfully completed in a workout recently (as in the past month) as well as loads used for machines and lifts. Recording your results from every workout will help you to keep track of these important numbers. As a rule, try not to do more than 10% more volume or load than you have done before from one session to the next. Listen to your body If you are having some pain (without a specific incident), this is usually your brain alerting you to the potential for tissue damage. Listen to the warning, reflect, and see if you can determine the reason and adapt your behaviour accordingly. If you cannot figure it out, ask a gym instructor or a health professional. Good technique Now is a terrific time to get back to the basics on technique try to use those warm ups mindfully, listen to the trainer’s instructions and dial in your form. Are you missing some range at the bottom of your squat or your overhead position? Get going on some mobility work at home and make sure you get your body moving well before ramping up your load and speed. At Carina Central Physiotherapy our Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists can provide personalised guidelines for exercise regimes for individuals or all ages, fitness and injury history. If you need some help getting safely back into regular exercise give us a call for an appointment Ph 3395 2448
