23.01.2022 TICK SEASON Spring is here which means its TICK SEASON!! Please ensure your pets are up to date with their tick prevention. We have already had 15 tick cases in two weeks!! The good news is 60% of these pets were on tick prevention which is just a quick tick removal and examination. Pets that were treated with tick prevention (NexgardSPECTRA, Bravecto, revolutionPLUS) the attached tick was dead with the pet showing no clinical signs of tick toxicity. Sadly the pets t...hat were NOT on tick prevention required immediate treatment with overnight care and ongoing home monitoring, which can cost thousands If you are unsure if your pet is up to date with tick prevention please contact us on 3849 4912 where we can ensure your pet stays safe this spring/summer #itcansavetheirlife

23.01.2022 Look at all those extra teeth!! We often post pictures about baby teeth extractions and explain why it is important to remove them whilst theyre puppies . This is a perfect example of what happens if left retained. When a puppy develops, the baby teeth (deciduous) fall out as the adult teeth erupt through the gum. If the baby teeth do not fall out naturally they are retained into adulthood inappropriately. This can cause problems with the adult teeth as they cant gro...w into normal position as the baby teeth are in the way. They can develop malocclusions (the teeth and jaw dont fit together properly) damage to the hard palate, and can cause plaque and tartar to develop faster between the overcrowded teeth. This little guy is 2 years old and had 8 baby teeth extracted during his desexing procedure. We will continue to monitor his teeth throughout his life to make sure those adult teeth stay pearly white #deciduousteeth See more

19.01.2022 How brave is this little lady Indie After a health examination during her vaccination last week Dr. Erina noticed she had a fractured carnassial tooth ouchies. This tooth has three roots and is the strongest tooth that dogs use to chew and break apart food/toys/ and the occasional household object . Her owner said she did not change her eating habits at home and gave NO indication of a sore tooth. Dogs are generally so good at disguising dental pain and will usually fight through the discomfort because they just LOVE food #foodislife

18.01.2022 Christmas can be a stressful time for your pets. The change of routine, visitors, children, loud music and decorations can all worry them. Planning ahead can help minimize stress for pets and ensure they have a happy home at Christmas too. Here are some tips for helping your pet have a stress free Christmas: Routine - try and keep food, exercise, bed and toilet breaks the same as consistency can help pets feel secure. ... Exercise - walking/ frisbee/ ball is a great was to keep their mind stimulated and calm. Keep water bowls full - ensure your pet has plenty of cool water. We recommend where possible, keep your pets out of the room during Christmas lunch to prevent them from begging and guests feeding unsafe table scraps. For Cats and anxious little ones - we recommend moving their food and water bowls to a quiet room where they can eat away from the guests to help reduce any anxiety they may be feeling. This should also be the same for their litter trays. Give Them A Safe Space Retreat - Even the friendliest of pets can become irritable when they are tired, which might mean they display unfriendly characteristics to guests. Giving your pet a safe space for them to escape when it gets too much can prevent this from happening. This area would ideally be away from anywhere that visitors might gather and should be filled with their favourite blankets and toys to help them relax. Your pet should be able to access this area whenever they please, with the option of joining the party if they want to- they may become more frustrated if they feel they are being locked away. Other things to remember Although fuss is welcomed from you, cuddles, strokes and being picked up by unfamiliar guests could irritate and upset your pet. Try to discourage your guests from fussing too much over your pets unless they are happy for the attention. Remember children cannot always read the signs of an anxious or irritable pet, so ensure any of your smaller guests are aware too.

17.01.2022 Beautiful boy George was out for a toilet break this morning but due to the hot weather we did the ‘10 second ground check’ to avoid burned paw pads. We placed our hand and paw on the ground for 10 seconds to see if it was safe for George’s paw pads. It was too uncomfortable for the Nurse to do so, so George’s toilet walk was done only in the shaded areas. Avoid burned paws by sharing quality time with your pet at cooler times of the day and be sure to offer them plenty of water. #george

09.01.2022 R U Ok? Its our national day of action where we remind Australians that everyday is the day to ask Are you ok?. No one can deny this year has been a huge year for all of us, all around the world . Weve experienced unprecedented stress, fear, anxiety, loss and isolation, and now more than ever its important to check in with our loved ones, friends, work colleagues and neighbours. Its ok not to be ok, but it is so important to ask the question to those around us. You... never know who might need that nudge or support #aconversationcouldchangealife See more

09.01.2022 It all started with a loaf of bread... that yummy scent wafting through the kitchen was too hard for Barkley to resist. Luckily mum noticed the bread missing and saw Barkley’s tummy looking rather full and uncomfortable. He was bought into us immediately to induce vomiting to relieve his tummy ache. Though bread is non-toxic to dogs, large amounts of it causes the abdomen to distend and become very uncomfortable. Some dogs may even develop ‘Gluttony bloat’. Lucky for Barkley his tummy is feeling much better and he’s currently sleeping it off. FYI the bread weighed in at 985g... wowza! #barkley #breadislife

02.01.2022 Meet mandy, she is a true soldier after having battled through brain surgery and chemo, she shows us what true strength really is Mandys mum noticed she was acting differently and thought she might have suffered a seizure. After some abnormal blood work we referred her to BVSC (Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre) where she underwent an MRI. She was found to have a brain tumour (meningioma). The specialist undertook the removal of the tumour and further radiation to kill off any remaining tumour cells. Three months post-op shes recovering well at home. Mandys beautiful smile despite all shes been through makes this job worth it. Make sure you pay attention to your pets behaviour so you can catch any issues early and give us the best chance to help #mandy

02.01.2022 It is vital to act quickly to provide first aid and veterinary attention if your pet is exposed to the cane toad toxin. * Remove the toxin from your pet’s mouth (tongue and gums) as soon as possible. To do this, use a wet cloth to thoroughly wipe the inside of your dog’s mouth. * If your dog settles down after wiping and rinsing the mouth out, keep them confined for several house and monitor them very closely for further symptoms.... SIGNS YOUR PET HAS CANE TOAD POISONING: * Profuse salivation, drooling and/or frothing from the mouth * Very red and slimy gums * Pawing at the mouth * Vomiting * Disorientation, shivers and/or tremors * Muscle rigidity, spasms or seizures * Very rapid heart rate and/or heart beat irregularities Please remember this situation can quickly become life threatening, and requires veterinary monitoring with possible treatment with intravenous fluids and anti-seizure medication. If you suspect your pet has ingested or come in contact with a Cane toad, we recommend you contact us ASAP for one of our friendly Vets to examine.

02.01.2022 Spring has sprung which means tick season is well & truly underway. Sadly we have already had patients through our doors suffering from tick toxicity. If your pet exhibits any of the following signs contact us ASAP. Loss of appetite ... Heavy breathing (panting, noisy breathing and possibly grunting/coughing) Vomiting Heavy salivation Wobbly legs (especially the back legs dogs tend to sit but not stand) The good news is that it can be treated. The bad news is that, untreated, it can be fatal. Please ensure your pets are up to date with their flea and tick prevention (bravecto, Nexgard, NexgardSpectra, RevolutionPLUS). It could save their life Photo credit: https://www.cdc.gov/ticks/avoid/on_pets.html

01.01.2022 ‘No bones about it, Christmas ham and bones are not good for your pet’ We are hearing a lot of our lovely owners talking about giving their best mate a bone or a bit of cooked ham for Christmas. If this is you please STOP! Ham (meat, fat and the bone) and other bones are very high in fat and can cause a very painful and serious condition called pancreatitis. This literally involves inflammation of the pancreas. We see this disease all year around but is peaks at Christ...mas. Overweight pets are even more prone because their pancreas function is already under stress because of the excesses in their diet but any dog can be affected. Pancreatitis can be life threatening in the short or long term. Dehydration, infection and blood poisoning, and heart failure are the short term threats. Long term damage to the pancreas makes the pet more prone to future bouts. This Christmas opt for pet friendly foods like ‘dog Turkey stick, Roo stick, fruit and veggies’. Your pets tummy & butt will thank you for it!
