04.01.2022 The biggest problem is so tiny 130,000 tonnes of plastic are thrown out in Australia every year and end up in our waterways and oceans. The scariest part is that much plastics choking our oceans are not the big pieces we can see and capture, rather than trillions of microplastics. These can be too hard to be captured by water filtration systems and often end up in our waterways and oceans even our tap water! Don’t bother reaching for your drink bottle as 93% of bottled water ...tested showed microplastic contamination. We don’t know the effects on people yet but are clearly observable on marine creatures. We all need to cut down on our dependence on plastics first by reducing the products we purchase and second being aware of the ones we can’t avoid. 1. Single use plastic Find reusable alternatives for cling wraps, water bottles, plastic bags, straws, takeaway coffee cups, takeaway containers. Once you have your replacements, it’s simply at matter of committing to use them all the time. 2. Synthetic clothing Usually made with artificial fibres such as nylon and polyester can release approximately 500,000 microfibres per wash. Ideally we want to invest in natural fibres to avoid creating microplastics. Alternatively you can get yourself a guppy bag from #SeaShepherd pop your synthetic clothes in there and wash as usual.
