24.01.2022 Just in case you haven't heard, the Victoria Government are now asking for feedback on the proposed #ContainerDepositScheme! The proposal suggests "a ten-cent refund for cans, small bottles, and cartons - similar to container deposit schemes elsewhere in Australia. Cans, small bottles, and cartons will get the refund because they’re the sort of drinks you buy when you’re away from home. They’re also the most commonly littered." Visit this link to have your say: https://eng...age.vic.gov.au/container-deposit-scheme #victoria #victoriangovernment

16.01.2022 Today we have another story from Caring For Our Bays #citizenscientist Heather "I believe that preserving our natural environment is the most important issue in our world. In the 1950's, people who dropped litter were called litterbugs, a term that was coined in America. It was always impressed on us that littering was a crime. There was never any doubt that we were the cause of the problem. ... When the Caring for Our Bays litter monitoring program was initiated in 2017, I was keen to help as a Litter Monitor. The program offered a chance to be part of the solution by demonstrating the huge volume of litter, identify the type and source, and offering ideas on how to prevent the litter getting into our Bay. It also focuses attention on what choices we make in our consumer driven society. There can be some surprises when you find something like the Calvan Chip packet washed ashore or a very old beer bottle. These finds tell us that any litter can stay around for years in the environment. Everyone can now participate with clean-ups and use Apps to collect data." Thank you Heather for your passion and for your ongoing commitment to keeping our bays clean! #caringforourbays #portphillipbay #litter #volunteer

09.01.2022 What are microplastics? Where do they come from? What is their impact on our marine life? Can they impact our health? To help answer these critical questions, Alice Forrest and Grumpy Turtle Creative have created a great free ebook to help you learn about microplastics and how to cut them out of your life. This ebook has easy, achievable ways that we can all act to reduce microplastics entering our waterways, bays and oceans and why we need to take action on this issue.... 07.01.2022 Friday volunteer highlight This highlight features Karin and Anne, who regularly clean up around St Leonard's Pier. Thank you for all of your hard work! "The other day I was watching the the dolphins at Portarlington pier giving a wonderful display of nature’s wonders. Caring For Our Bays has given me the opportunity to be engaged in a community program and to make a difference for the environment. Anne and I work together to pick up litter at our designated hotspot (St Leo...nards Pier). We enjoy the social side, plus the visible difference after a clean up. We appreciate being part of a group of like minded people and the educational aspect of it. The bonus is seeing wild creatures on our door step and we hope that the ongoing litter program will be a success to provide a safer and cleaner environment in and around the bays. Being a volunteer is a fun and rewarding experience, here all age groups can participate in making a difference." Thank you #citizenscientists Karin and Anne! #volunteer #caringforourbays

04.01.2022 Volunteer highlight! This week, please put your hands together for more of our amazing #citizenscientists; Stephanie, Olegas and Chobe. "We are a home educating family who have always lived an extremely dedicated conscious existence to limit our own environmental impact, here in Geelong West. At the end of every year we discuss ideas about how we want to take on the following year. And one of the discussions at the end of 2018 was to become involved in a volunteer community... project & then we came across ‘Humans in Geelong’ Instagram page. It ticked many of our boxes, outdoors, contributing to our community and environment, along with becoming ‘Citizen Scientists’ created opportunity for us to experience further aspects of our home education lifestyle via life experiences. Olegas was 15, and Chobe, was 10, both avid lovers of our oceans and a consciousness of their responsibility in the cycle of this life. We made a commitment to each other and to CFOB to participate for 12 months. Our 12 months came up at the beginning of 2020 and with a resounding ‘YES’, we have all committed to another 12 months. Each of us have become extremely invested in our work and the small area at Burnt Point. We have witnessed land animals, aquatic animals, animals of the air as the journey through their seasons and change. We have witnessed our rubbish pick up ebb and flow depending upon the fishing seasons, we have learnt an incredible amount in this short period of time and genuinely feel deeply humbled to participate as Litter Stoppers volunteers for CFOB." Great work team, thank you for keeping our local #ramsar wetlands clean! #volunteer #citizenscientist
