18.01.2022 Participants love our performing arts program, especially when they put on shows for their family and friends to watch. It enables them to experience the excitement of a theatre performance and be admired for their talent by the audience. Unfortunately our stage curtains have broken and we need your help to replace them. Visit https://www.carinyasociety.org.au/donate/ to make a tax-deductible donation and ensure that participants can continue to experience the feelings of excitement and joy that a real stage performance brings.

18.01.2022 We would like to introduce Andrew Fortelny, the newest Director on our Board. He is Wealth Manager and Branch Principal at Yellow Brick Road Coburg & Brunswick and joined the Board in September because he wanted to give back to the local community. When he is not helping his valued clients build their own successful future, Andrew enjoys time away from the office cycling, playing tennis, indoor soccer and spending time with his wife and two children. You can read more about him at https://www.carinyasociety.org.au/board-of-directors

17.01.2022 Great news! Carinya will begin delivering centre based day services for NDIS participants over the next few weeks. While this is great news for participants, the guidelines that now exist to allow Carinya day services to operate, place a number of important restrictions on how it can operate. Carinya will calling all participants. We will offer participants a day service as soon as possible. Eventually we will offer participants more options than they have had in the past.

16.01.2022 Stay tuned ..coming soon

16.01.2022 Carinya held its 18th AGM this morning. Pictured here, the CEO Debbie Mitchell says farewell to outgoing Board Chair Colin McKenzie who retires after 13 years of dedicated service. She also welcomes Andrew Fortelny to a Board Director’s position.

16.01.2022 A PLAN TO RETURN WHEN IT’S ALLOWED There is a suggestion that sometime soon, there will be clarity if and when centre based day services for NDIS participants may be able to commence in some form in Victoria. From the advice received so far, it is likely that any resumption will allow Carinya to only offer limited day services. Management at Carinya are preparing a recovery plan for restarting day services. And that plan acknowledges that the number of NDIS particpants that... are likely to be able to attend at any one time will probably be limited; as there is a slow easing off of the restrictions. Carinya will develop a plan but it must wait for the advice to come through that allows centre based day services to start. When day service start again, safety is our first priority and maximising participants access to our centre based day services our other priority. Carinya will be consulting with its participants, staff, and participants’ families to building an understanding of what will work best for everyone, as the slow easing off occurs.

16.01.2022 Happy Fathers day from all of us at Carinya Society!

12.01.2022 The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services representative today confirmed that Carinya Society is able to continue to provide centre based day service ‘care’ to NDIS participants who live in the ten postcode areas affected by the Victorian Government lockdown of suburbs where the rates of COVID-19 infection are unreasonably high. So today Carinya Society provided a letter to all families who may be stopped and checked if they travel outside the lockdown area (in which they live). The letter explains that Carinya Society has received permission to provide care for participants and that the vehicle is transporting that person to a place where they will receive care.

10.01.2022 SORRY. Today is National SORRY Day and marks the start of Reconciliation Week. We take this day to reflect on the mistreatment of the Aboriginal people, the Stolen Generation and to acknowledge the detrimental impact it has had on the Indigenous community. ... The staff and participants have commemorated Sorry Day at Carinya by working on various interpretations of Indigenous art work in the art and craft programs. ** Carinya Society acknowledges Australia’s first people as the traditional owners and custodians of the land on which we work and deliver our services. In particular, Carinya Society would like to pay its respect to the Woiwurrung and Wurundjeri people whose lands occupies the Melbourne, Moreland City Council and specifically Coburg area where we are located.** #nationalsorryday

09.01.2022 Members, old and new, attend Carinya Society’s AGM

09.01.2022 A couple of our staff members, Nes and Pippa, came up with the wonderful idea of doing a reverse advent calendar which is where you collect an item each day in the lead up to Christmas to donate to your local Foodbank, charity, shelter or refuge. They connected with the online group From Little Things who supplied them with boxes and will then take them to the relevant charities. They thought it would be a great way to engage the Carinya staff in a group activity that is tangible and also in remembering the true meaning of Christmas. The generosity and enthusiasm within staff members has been heart-warming. Within the first week we have already filled 4 boxes and we know we will fill many more!

09.01.2022 Carinya will remain and continue to provide all our normal services.

08.01.2022 Please be advised that FRIDAY FEAST will be suspended until further notice.

08.01.2022 Update: Carinya is implementing a program of social distancing. Our service will be making sure our participants don’t come into contact with people not associated with Carinya. Community access outings and crowded venues/activities programs will be cancelled and alternative arrangements will be made locally. Program locations will be subject to change on the day and we will be guided by the Australian Government Department of Health on any areas of risk. ... All Carinya vehicles interiors and external door handles will be wiped down with disinfectant before and after every use to ensure there is adequate infection control. All Carinya door handles, program tables and seats, benches and hand high surfaces will wiped down with disinfectant throughout the day based on a schedule. All participants and staff members will be prompted throughout the day, each day to wash their hands with soap and warm running water. Visitors and contractors are being discouraged from entering buildings. 06.01.2022 Suburbs In Lockdown Today the Victorian Premier has announced that from 11.59pm on Wednesday 1stJuly 2020 a number of suburbs in Melbourne will be in local lockdown. This means that if you are booked to attend Carinya centre based day services tomorrow you are still able to attend. For those of you who don’t live in these postcode areas that will be in lockdown, you do not need to be concerned about Carinya Society. As Carinya Society is in Coburg (3058) we will remain open for you to attend centre based day service as normal. During tomorrow Carinya will check with the Department to clarify, if participants who live in any of those places which will be in lockdown, can still attend Carinya’s centre based day services in Coburg from 2ndJuly

05.01.2022 Carinya continues to review and improve its day services arrangements to keep its’s participants and staff safe. We are taking all necessary measures to ensure participant and staff safety during this difficult time. And so, we wanted to let you know we will be implementing a change with the way we will use our buildings and buses for day service, and creating teams for day program staff. From early next week Carinya will have all participants and staff in day services alloca...ted to a single building area/building to limit the exposure they have each other. There will be no interaction at Carinya between participants and staff in different buildings. We have purchased an abundance of recreational resources to ensure all participants have large range of activities to keep everyone physically and intellectually stimulated during a time where everyone is very limited to where they can go during the pandemic. While it has been difficult and challenging to find hand sanitiser to buy, we have never run out and are continuing to provide the hygiene practices recommended for us. We are grateful for all the wonderful feedback we have received from families during this time. See more

04.01.2022 ALL HANDS ON DECK FOR ERIC PLEASE SHARE THIS POST Eric is a 25 year old funny, energetic, bubbly and loving gentle giant! He is a cherished son to his beautiful mum Sharon and a much loved participant of Carinya Society.... Eric has Autism and limited communication but we all know how much he LOVES yellow solo, banana lollies, Charlie Brown and those magnificent men! And while he doesn’t know it, Eric is currently fighting the fight of his life, a rare and aggressive form of Leukaemia. He is undergoing chemotherapy which will be ongoing for about 12 months, mostly as an inpatient again due to his disability, limited communication and personal care needs. Sharon has had to leave her job as a carer to support Eric 24/7 as he otherwise would not be able to receive any treatment. She has rarely left his side in weeks. We have set up this gofundme to help ease the financial burden and to help his family support Eric to fight this fight! https://www.gofundme.com/all-hands-on-deck-for-eric

04.01.2022 Now that the Victoria five days lockdown is set to end at midnight, from tomorrow, Carinya Society will operate its centre based day services under the same conditions that occurred last week. Please call the office to clarify any questions you might have and confirm the date that you or your family member will be returning.

04.01.2022 Swinging into the weekend with a smile!

04.01.2022 Why is Carinya’s day services closed, and when will they open again? The DHHS COVID-19 Plan for the Disability Sector is the guide that states that disability day services should not be operating in Victoria. The Stay at Homes Directions (No 3) is in force from 8th April to 13th April in Victoria. My advice is that given the Stay at Home a Directions (No 3), that started yesterday,is even more restrictive, the CHO must remain very concerned about the rates of infection and... transmission in the community. Therefore it is my judgement that the CMO will not relax the restrictions on staying at home for some time to come. Sadly I am not expecting Carinya day services to commence operating for some time that is well beyond the 13th April. Carinya look forward to supporting participants as soon as possible and we hope everyone is safe and well.

04.01.2022 Groundskeeper Sora on the job!
