14.01.2022 Well, were into November! In three weeks’ time we would have been celebrating the 30th running of the Energy Breakthrough in Maryborough. Unfortunately it is no...t to be this year. Whilst we can’t attend the event this year, it’s still great to reflect back on the years past and relive some of the wonderful moments. The 2009 Energy breakthrough was another one of those evolution years. A year that saw a young group of students from Bendigo south east college build a brand new carbon vehicle from scratch and group of students from Bendigo senior building one of the best looking machines I’ve seen. Local team Highview college also had 2 brand new trikes for the junior team and category C team. Padua College also had a breakout year in 2008 and certainly had the speed to match it with the best, but a few reliability issues cost them a chance at the win. They also had a brand new vehicle for 2009. A team that had really started to gain momentum was the team from Woodleigh School. They had been working away on their vehicle Helter Skelter for a couple of years and had really got it looking very speedy in 2009. The race started under threatening skies, with the vehicle Evie from Highview leading the first few laps. It was a young Russell Nankervis from BSE though, that managed to take the lead as he went about dismantling the opposition, setting a 1:42 lap on the way. After a good solid chunk of dry running, the skies opened. Not just a small shower, but an absolute downpour! There were small rivers running down the track and visibility became very difficult. Woodleigh and padua were really revelling in the wet conditions and were able to make inroads. When Sunday morning came around, the clouds were looking very threatening. A big early morning shower making things very difficult. Then at around 11 o’clock, an almighty storm came through. There was no way the race could continue, so a red flag was called. Both Woodleigh and padua would have wanted the race to keep going, because they were much faster in the wet conditions and were making huge inroads on the leading BSE team. Unfortunately with another large predicted front, the difficult decision was made to call the race early. See more
