20.01.2022 With your support, our on-the-ground staff have had an incredible impact on India. Here’s some examples of your generosity in action, helping vulnerable people to combat COVID-19.

19.01.2022 Solidarity & Support for Beirut Following Devastating Explosion Lebanon is reeling from the effects of the explosion in Beirut on Tuesday at 6pm local time. Over 135 people were killed, more than 5,000 injured and thousands affected, many of whom have slept in shattered homes and in the streets during a deadly pandemic. Loss of infrastructure is estimated to be in the vicinity of AUD $14-21 billion. Caritas Lebanon is working to assist the most vulnerable, which in this case ...is such a huge undertaking due to the sheer scale of people impacted. The most urgent needs are food, health and shelter. Hygiene kits, already essential to combat COVID-19, are even more essential to protect people from the toxicity dispersed into air from the 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate. Medications are needed with many supplies and hospitals directly impacted in the blast, coupled with the high number of injuries experienced. Material for clean-up and renovation is critical. Food insecurity is of major concern, as wheat stored at the port was destroyed and flour is sold only to bakeries, as per government decree. Caritas Australia has committed to provide immediate response in the form of crucial financial support as part of its already established Middle East Regional Appeal. Additionally, through its in-country staff and partners in Lebanon, the wider Caritas network is working to deliver: Food and water. Hygiene kits including masks and soap. Material for shelter repairs and the clean-up of debris. Medication and other health services. We stand in solidarity with the people of Beirut and the Lebanese community here in Australia at this time of enormous heartbreak and loss. The Lebanese Catholic community is a valued part of the Caritas Australia network. 12.01.2022 This year marks the 75th anniversary of the first nuclear explosion and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima 6th August and Nagasaki 9th August. The Office for Social Justice has prepared a prayer to help the Australian Catholic community to mark the Ten Days for Peace in solidarity with the Church in Japan. The Ten Days for Peace which the Catholic Church in Japan celebrates each year was the response of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Japan to Pope John Paul IIs appeal at ...Hiroshima on 25 February 1981. It was the first time that a Pope had visited Hiroshima. Pope Francis also visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki in November 2019. At the Hiroshima Peace Memorial he declared that the use of atomic energy for the purposes of war is immoral, and that the possession of nuclear weapons is also immoral. We invite you to pray & share this prayer, especially from 6 to 15 August. Lord of all creation, make us instruments of your peace. Let us learn the lessons of the past, and put an end to nuclear weapons. Where there is hatred, let us sow love. May our love for each other and for all of your creation leave no place for making or owning weapons of mass destruction. Where there is injury, let us be bearers of your healing and pardon. May we create paths to dialogue, understanding and reconciliation. Where there is doubt, let us foster faith in you. May we let the weapons fall from our hands and know that you are God. Where there is despair, let us hold up hope. May our lives reflect your love in the face of violence, knowing that love is stronger than death. Where there is darkness, let us be bearers of your light. May our choices show that peace is possible. Where there is sadness, let us bring the joy of the Gospel. Amen. 09.01.2022 Amazing commitment by St Josephs School Cobram whose Caritas Ks event in Term 1 was cancelled due to school closures. On the second last day of Term 2, despite all that was happening, and other asks of school families, they held their Ks event. Undeterred by rain, the whole school carried buckets of water around the inside perimeter of the school in solidarity with those who walk, on average, 6 Kilometres every day for water. A meaningful action at any time but particularly ...now when were continually being reminded to wash our hands frequently with soap and water. Walking in solidarity with those who have no soap and only dirty water is truly kilometres for compassion. A commitment, no doubt enhanced by the fact that their RE Leader, Carmel Natale, completed a Caritas Global Justice course a few years back and travelled with the group to visit Caritas partnerships in Uganda. Thank you St Josephs from all at Caritas Australia. St Josephs School Cobram Caritas Australia Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst

08.01.2022 Let us pray with Pope Francis that the planets resources will not be plundered, but shared in a just and respectful manner. No to plundering; yes to sharing. Pope Francis September 2020 We are squeezing out the planets goods. Squeezing them out, as if the earth were an orange.... Countries and businesses from the global north have enriched themselves by exploiting the natural resources of the south, creating an ecological debt. Who is going to pay this debt? In addition, this ecological debt is increased when multinationals do abroad what they would never be allowed to do in their own countries. Its outrageous. Today, not tomorrow; today, we have to take care of Creation responsibly. Let us pray that the planets resources will not be plundered, but shared in a just and respectful manner. No to plundering; yes to sharing. See more

03.01.2022 TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL: MENTAL HEALTH IN AUSTRALIA TODAY Every year, the Australian Catholic Bishops release a Social Justice Statement related to current issues in Australia. Their latest Statement for 2020/2021 is entitled To Live Life to the Full: Mental health in Australia today. The Statement encourages faith communities, governments and each one of us, to make mental health a priority. It is a timely message in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. You can download th...e Statement at http://bit.ly/SocialJustice_2020 A new initiative this year is a podcast series presenting the content of the Statement together with conversations with a range of people who have specific knowledge & experience concerning the Issues that it raises. The link to the podcast series is also at http://bit.ly/SocialJustice_2020 and a range of podcast platforms. Just search for The Revolution of Tenderness podcast. The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting the mental health of many members of our parishes, schools and communities. In fact, most of us will experience a mental health problem at some point over the course of our lives. Understanding mental health will help us to be aware of those who need our support. Our parishes, organisations and communities can be places of acceptance care and healing, not places of rejection, judgment or stigma. The Bishops invite us all to reject stigmatisation, to work for the transformation of social determinants of mental ill-health, and to call for policies and service provision that meets the needs of the poorest and most marginalised members of our community.
