22.01.2022 Hi friends! I can’t wait to get together in person again soon. Here is the final PD opportunity in my 2020 series and it will be in a real space with 3D humans whose heads are fully attached to the rest of their bodies. What a treat!... The theme seems particularly relevant as we emerge from lock down. The Art of Relationship, connection and co-creation. Looking forward to seeing you if you can make it. 20.01.2022 Been painting it out this evening. Engaging with a complex landscape. It is big. Boon Warrung Country. Inverloch, South East Victoria. Shifting sands and an ever changing inlet. ... This is a place I love walking to and in and around on my daily lock down walk. I would love doing exactly the same thing every day even if it wasn’t lock down. The difference is, I take photos on the walk and then paint from memory and photos at home. Because in lock down, I can’t take my canvas and plonk down insitu as I love to do. I gave my self permission to keep painting even though it’s not insitu. I guess this is pretty metaphoric for all the ways we keep connecting at the moment. Lots of love to everyone xxxx #ACTivateAT #arttherapy #mentalhealth #lockdownart

20.01.2022 Bernie Neville has been busy during the pandemic penning this brilliant new book "The Gods in a Time of Corona". He draws on his intimate knowledge of the Greek Gods and their archetypal dramas, contextualising them in contemporary Corona virus times. This book is a lively social commentary written with wit and wisdom as only Bernie can. 17.01.2022 My art practice is an essential part of my own mental health care. As an Arts Therapist I love sharing this wellness with others. Thats why I am so invested in the current Victorian member led campaign ACTivate Arts Therapy. Professional Arts Therapists are trained to Masters level in Government approved (TEQSA) qualifications. I have been an Arts Therapy educator for 20 years, had a great career myself working in community, forensic, mental health, international aid, homelessness sectors and more. I have a moral obligation to help ensure there is work for new graduates of Arts Therapy and access to Arts Therapy for so many more people. 15.01.2022 Supervision Studio is a unique, art based form of supervision developed and facilitated by Dr Carla van Laar, ANZACATA registered supervisor. In 2020, Supervision Studio moved online in response to pandemic restrictions. Unexpectedly, with the workshops suddenly accessible to people participating from home, Arts Therapists from all around Australia started attending and the monthly workshops have been fully booked with waiting lists. The arts based and collaborative structure... of Supervision Studio provides a container for your spontaneous content to emerge. Frequently, threads of shared experience weave through the session as group members find connections between their own experience and that of others. Working through arts based practices with the content that arises enables insight and perspective, facilitating the strengthening of your own confidence and values within a community of support. In 2021, Supervision Studio will continue to be offered online, keeping connections alive, and strengthening the professional identity of our growing Arts Therapy community. It would be wonderful to have you participate. Dates for 2021 are open now, so have a look, get organised, and book in early to ensure your place. https://carlavanlaar.com/supervision-studio-2021-book-your/

13.01.2022 Thank you to The Dax Centre Art Gallery for this mention and featuring my art work. What an unexpected honour. It’s wonderful to know the beautiful gallery at Melbourne Uni on Royal Parade is open once again to the public on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. 13.01.2022 My dear friend Dr Alisoun Neville is well-known to Arts Therapists as a trainer and mentor helping others set up their successful practices. Alisoun’s substantial experience in policy and advocacy have been an invaluable resource for the ACTivate Arts Therapy campaign over the past year. We have co-authored numerous advocacy documents and Alisoun also personally mentored me in the area of writing to and meeting with politicians. I am elated to warmly welcome Alisoun as a cre...ative workshop facilitator at the 2021 Creative Mental Health Forum and Self Care Retreat. In this workshop, Alisoun brings her life long love of writing, and more recently acquired love of painting, asking us how can we see in new ways, with our words? Find out more about Alisoun’s workshop and the forum/retreat here: https://carlavanlaar.com/dr-alisoun-neville-look-again-how/ Welcome Alisoun!

13.01.2022 Australia, and particularly Victoria, is experiencing a mental health crisis. Arts Therapists are standing by ready to help - we just need some changes to government definitions. Engaging the expertise of Mental Health workers is more crucial than ever in responding to the challenges facing Victorians due to COVID 19. The new initiative placing Mental Health Practitioners in all Victorian schools reflects this need.... The Victorian State Government's Mental Health Practitioners in Schools Initiative Information for Schools FAQ sheet states "there are known workforce supply shortages in the mental health sector". There is an untapped workforce of trained Mental Health Practitioners who are ready and willing to participate in supporting the community - Arts Therapists. Arts Therapy engages the power of the arts to promote health and is facilitated by a trained mental health professional - a Professional Arts Therapist. Professional Arts Therapists are trained to Master's level in rigorous TEQSA approved training programs, and are members of the peak body ANZACATA. Professional Arts Therapists already work in hospitals, schools, mental health services, prisons, family violence prevention, NDIS, community health organisations and many other settings. However, the definition of Mental Health Practitioner in the 2014 Victorian Mental Health Act does not mention Professional Arts Therapists and hence they are unable to help fill important roles such as the new Mental Health Practitioner in Schools positions being rolled out throughout Victoria. We support an urgent revision of the definition of Mental Health Practitioner in the 2014 Victorian Mental Health Act to include 'Professional Arts Therapist'. This revision will enable a massively under-utilised workforce of highly trained professionals to help with the demands on the Mental Health sector during this time of crisis and beyond, in the recovery period. Thank you for your support. Dr Carla van Laar MCAT DTAP AThR https://www.change.org/arts-therapist-mental-health-practit

13.01.2022 Thank you to all the wonderful attendees at yesterday’s workshop The Art of Relationship, Connection and Co-creation. We explored the transition from being locked down to opening back up, acknowledging that parts of ourselves may have become locked down. While there is plenty of joy in reconnecting, there are also challenges, and we noted the importance to be mindful of this in our work with others, to go gently, take space when overwhelmed, and be understanding of the need to retreat.

09.01.2022 Arts therapists - are you keen to keep the decolonising practice conversation going? This interview with Marnie Weule and Tara Harriden highlights some of the challenges of bringing Western mental health and indigenous culture together in practice. We also hear about how art therapy can be a culturally safe practice, and what is need to further our field in Australia. ... #Arttherapy #decolonisingpractice https://carlavanlaar.com/marnie-weule-and-tara-harriden-ab/

07.01.2022 The "Chill Skills" project was delivered and evaluated in two secondary schools and the findings of the evaluation resulted in an award of $80,000 NAB Schools first funding so it could be delivered in two further secondary schools. There was an overall 24.95% increased knowledge of triggers to anxiety, along with a 55.15% increased knowledge of coping strategies and a 25.05% increased intention to help-seek amongst the students. The Chill Skills project ALSO provides solid ev...idence that an Arts Therapist can be of great value as a Mental Health Practitioner in Secondary School settings, because I designed this project and am the author of this manual. Read the article and click on the link, sign and share the petition to recognise Arts Therapists as Mental Health Practitioners and working in Victoria's Secondary Schools. https://carlavanlaar.com/chill-skills-anxiety-prevention-p/

06.01.2022 Arts Therapy in Schools? IT WOULD'VE BEEN LIFE CHANGING FOR ME Debbie shares her own story to illuminate how Arts Therapy can help today’s young people in need.... Not sure what Arts Therapy is all about? Debbie explains from her own lived experience. She says, "As you're drawing you have light globe moments and get things put in to perspective". "I found it to be a great help to process a lot of things that I've gone through". Let's spread the word and get the decision makers on board to ACTivate Arts Therapy and expand Victoria's under resourced mental health work force by including "Professional Arts Therapists" in the definition of "Mental Health Practitioner" in Victoria's 2014 Mental Health Act. It's time. Help raise awareness of Arts Therapy by sharing. Thanks Debbie!
