25.01.2022 My thoughts and best wishes go out to all those struggling in this weeks extreme weather conditions. For us, just a beautiful, gentle, soaking 51 mm over the last 48 hours. Couldn’t have hoped for any thing nicer. The many fungi are loving the damp conditions, the only downside is that my field mushies have gone mushy.

23.01.2022 A shout out to the grain farmers. Much respect to you all. With our once promising season rapidly deteriorating, this ungrazed oat crop will be cut shortly to try and salvage some value out of the paddock. My stress levels would be higher if I had to rely on crops for my livelihood.

21.01.2022 Poor Sam is having trouble wading through all the clover. What a difference 6 months can make.

21.01.2022 Six month old Raphael is making an early bid for next years show team. First time being handled and seems to be enjoying it. Out of the equally quiet Sixpence H122 and by Ondiong F78, this makes him a full brother to Laserbeam.

18.01.2022 Not sure whether Clancy is scared, annoyed or just excited to be left on the bike, surrounded by cattle. Either way, he behaved well.

18.01.2022 Lady Linda R15. A heifer’s first calf, out of a Linebacker daughter, and by Ondiong F78.

18.01.2022 I only had 4 heifers to calve back in the Autumn. 2 of those 4 had heifer calves. Both calves are out of Linebacker daughters and are sired by Ondiong F78.

18.01.2022 The yearling heifers are in today for their 400 day weights and vaccinations, ready to be joined in the next few weeks. These girls are 12-14 months and weights ranged from 399 to 503 kg, an average of 427 kg off grass only. None have been sold out of this mob, with every heifer of the drop being joined, to help with the herd rebuilding. Amazing what a good season can do.

17.01.2022 By Woodbourn Lexus and out of an Ondiong F78 daughter, she’ll be a keeper.

16.01.2022 At just 26 days old this little bull R33 is getting ‘chunky’. Out of Naiad N12, and by Cadfor Marvellous, he’s already ticking boxes.

16.01.2022 Well calving is almost over, and we’re still inside the first 3 week cycle. With these bull calves born overnight, we now have just 3 to go.

16.01.2022 One of those times the IPhone camera doesn’t cut the mustard. I’m dizzy just looking up that far. Baby Wedgie, or do they call it a Wedgeling??

16.01.2022 While a mature Premier Digit pasture is about as robust, fast growing and drought hardy as anything, the newly germinated plants are extremely slow growing and fragile. After a few drought years, we finally have an ideal season for it. However, it’s apparently also an ideal season for newly hatched grasshoppers in big numbers. This will be interesting!

16.01.2022 Sweet old Anna had a bull calf this morning. That grumpy look on her face is because, like me, she wanted a heifer. Oh well, maybe next year.

13.01.2022 Whoops, my bad!! Back in December we had one of those days, you know, the one where you find your big +6.6 birthweight herd sire in with the yearling heifers, having gone over two barbed wire fences to get there, and torn his (bleep) open in the process. It was a career ending injury, and since he was in the paddock less than half a day I made a Captain’s Call and decided (wrongly) that he wouldn’t have been able to do the business. The heifers were joined as usual in late April for a February/March 2021 calving. Fast forward to today, and this young hussy couldn’t hide her naughty little secret any longer. All’s well that ends well, I guess.

13.01.2022 Well that’s a bit rude!

11.01.2022 Overachiever???

11.01.2022 In a bid to accelerate my ‘post drought’ herd rebuild, I headed off last week to Waroona Murray Greys and was lucky enough to acquire these seven lovely, young ladies. So excited for them to arrive home safely today, and looking great. Feeling kinda chuffed!

08.01.2022 When you go A over T in the grass and the picket driver hits the deck a bit hard. Apparently you can’t just replace that bit without replacing the whole motor, so some epoxy, and roof and gutter silicone will come into play.

08.01.2022 Does anyone else’s heart beat a little faster when they see this in their paddock? This is Pontiac’s little brother Rags To Riches

08.01.2022 Ooh, I can’t even believe I’m about to utter these words, so I’ll just whisper quietly, I hope the rain stays away for another couple of days.

08.01.2022 Ok, ok, so I’m a couple of days late for National Eucalyptus Day. Thought it was still a good time for an update on the little line of trees planted 8 months ago in a very hard bit of ground, on the western side of the cattle yards. As you can see they’re mostly doing well, and a wet March means they should be right, going forward.

07.01.2022 Well 16 long days after mowing, and with a few rain delays, we finally got there. Baled this morning under trying conditions. Thanks Thommo and Paul. Now to get them carted so I can put some cattle in. Following a short grazing period, this paddock will be getting sown down to subtropical grasses before summer.

04.01.2022 Some of the cute little ‘time wasters’. I could sit and watch them all day.

03.01.2022 Not cool, Night Life. Not cool at all. Just 17 days into the joining season! Guess I’d better go dust the cobwebs off Cadfor Marvellous.

03.01.2022 This is now standard for Sam, every time we pull up in the paddock. Think we might be in for a mouse plague this spring/summer.

03.01.2022 The lads, Sam, Junior, Pippin and Gus. Just coz it’s International Dog Day, apparently.

02.01.2022 Like Mum used to say It’s all fun and games til someone pokes an eye out! If you listen closely you’ll notice that he’s a double striker too. He has a second go on the way back every single time. I’m feeling extremely under appreciated, especially since they’re nesting in a tree that I planted.

02.01.2022 Dear old Anna F118 is about ready to pop. If that belly gets any lower to the ground, I’m concerned she may ‘bottom out’ over a log And for the ‘showies’ out there who are all about tails, yes, hers does drag on the ground

01.01.2022 I love this time of year. After years of severe drought, I was concerned (unnecessarily, as it turns out) about my pasture legume seed bank. But this year is the best it’s been over the whole farm. While we can’t grow some of the super, dooper clovers that thrive in parts of the country, we do alright in the ‘variety’ department when it comes to winter legumes. Photos taken this week.

01.01.2022 Carlinga Raise The Roof (R44). Holy smokes! At just 32 days old, this guy is growing like a weed. Out of Naiad H20 and by Kyeema Night Life
