We have heaps (literally!) of various mulches - lucerne and straw bales, bagged sugar cane mulch and pea straw. The bales can be bagged into reusable woven plastic bags for ease of transport.

25.01.2022 It is hot and humid in Sydney and insects are out in force: aphids, cabbage butterflies, grasshoppers and stink bugs. Cockatoos come to rip seedlings out of the ground and to munch on passionfruit. Dont despair, cover your vegetable beds and trees with white bird net or mesh to protect them from pests!

24.01.2022 Spring is well and truly underway, and we are ready to help your garden! Manures, mineral soil supplements and mulches are piled up in the store, they need to be applied to the soil now for a lush garden in summer. Gardening tools and green manure seeds are also available in our shop.

20.01.2022 Keeping chickens in a garden is a pleasure, they are entertaining pets, eat food scraps and pests, and of course, you get eggs! Currently we have in stock several different types of young hens (pullets) and point-of-lay hens: silky bantams (white and black) and various medium size cross-breeds (with Australorp, Isa Brown and Rhodes Island Red). You can also stock up on good quality chicken feed for birds at all stages of life, from very young ones to established laying hens. Come this long weekend to see the birds and to get advice from Sam about what chicken are suitable for your family.

20.01.2022 Winter is coming, the nights are getting chilly. It is still time to plant cabbages, cauliflowers, broccolis, onions, garlic (pictured) and broadbeans. Prepare the vegetable patch well with water-absorbing vermiculite, compost and a bit of dolomite and lime because these veg like sweet soils!

19.01.2022 Help your garden to recover after the recent heavy rains. Spread lucerne chaff on muddy lawns, mulch garden beds with lucerne hay to keep the moisture in the soil, top up productive vegetable patch, which the rain leached of nutrients, with manures and compost. We have them all! Our shed is full of straw and hay bales and we also sell large reusable bags to fit them in for ease of transport. The store is open on the long weekend!

19.01.2022 In the heat of the summer make sure your flock has enough cold water and a shelter from the sun. Freezing fruit and vegetable treats in a container of water is a good way to keep your chickens cool and well hydrated!

19.01.2022 If you havent heard about Diatomaceous Earth, it is a powdered form of silica, made of fossilised diatoms freshwater micro-organisms, used as as a natural pesticide (approved for organic and biodynamic applications). When dusted on affected plants it dessicates and suffocates soft-bodied pests, such as aphids, white fly and caterpillars, but also bedbugs and beetles. Take care not to inhale when applying wear a dust mask. DE also helps to keep your chicken healthy. Dust ...the floor and perches in a chookhouse to get rid of insects laying eggs there. Rub DE under chicken feathers to prevent infestation or to kill mites and fleas. Another use of DE is as an intestinal dewormer for poultry, cats and dogs. Mixed with moistened food and ingested it kills internal parasites. The DE which is currently in stock consists exclusively of freshwater diatoms and is sold as 2kg, 5 kg and 23 kg bags.

19.01.2022 Next week we expect a delivery of about 40-50 chickens, call us or drop in, we are happy to advise what chooks are suitable for you!

18.01.2022 Read about how the store is part of the districts history - weve been here for 85 years! http://www.weekendnotes.com/carlingford-produce-store/

16.01.2022 Time to sow carrots now! The secret of growing beautiful long roots is the structure of the soil. It needs to be finely crumbled and open. If you garden on clay, try to build up the carrot patch in a raised bed, adding a mix of sand and sieved compost. A mix of 1 part each of sand, vermiculite and compost also produces fantastic results. We store bagged sand and deliver in bulk, to make it easy for you to create a productive carrot patch!

15.01.2022 Do you know that we also sell small, colourful birds such as budgies and canaries? Currently we have a pair of beautiful Indian Ringnecks looking for a new home (blue male and yellow female - $150 each or $250 the pair)- see the photos. We can supply you with various types of bird food, nests, feeders and baths appropriate for the birds you keep.

15.01.2022 During hot summer days do not forget about the birds and animals living in your garden, particularly if you keep chooks. Hose the ground around the chicken coop to cool down the air, give your chickens plenty of cold water to drink and a bowl they could dunk their heads in. Freeze water overnight in a lunchbox to have a block of ice to add to their drinking water. Chooks also love frozen treats, such as frozen grapes or melons.

14.01.2022 Christmas has arrived early! We have dozens of purebred chickens: Araucanas (Lavender and Black), Gold Lace Wyandott, Plymouth Rock and Light Sussex (in the video). They would make a very colourful flock. Ask us also about fertilised Light Sussex eggs! If you have questions, please call us on 9871 4777

13.01.2022 This is the best time of the year to buy pullets (young hens before they start laying eggs). Look at these cute Silkies, small, fluffy and loved by children and adults both!

10.01.2022 Do you know that the original shed and (still working) machinery at Carlingford Produce are included in the State Heritage Register? "The building is historically significant as tangible evidence of farming and transport practices in the Carlingford area from the early 20th Century through to the present. It has provided agricultural supplies to the Hills and surrounding districts continuously for 85 years and it also operated as a feed mill for around 60 years. It has social... significance for families of past members, customers and staff of the original Producers Cooperative Company and its successors. The store has associations with William Gooden, the Post WWII Chairman and Managing Director responsible for the expansion of the Cooperative - he developed links with the farming and broader communities inlcuding local firms and James Ruse Agricultural High School. The site is a rare surviving example of a purpose built agricultural building in the area, containing operable vintage milling equipment from the first half of the 20th Century." http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//ViewHeritageItemDetails

03.01.2022 With warm weather come garden pests and animal parasites. Make sure you often check your chickens for mites and lice - look under their feathers, especially around the vent and under wings for crawling insects. Dirty bums may be a sign of intestinal worms. When your chooks are affected they often stop laying eggs, their behaviour changes, combs may turn pale. Come to see us for advice about how to treat parasites. We stock a full range of both organic-approved and standard p...oultry treatments. Think about preventative measures, too: 1.Give your chickens space to make dust bowls to take dust baths which desiccate skin and feathers parasites. To make this process more efficient add sifted wood ash and diatomaceous earth to the dust. 2. Add apple cider vinegar to their drinking water - about 1 ml per chook a day. This helps to keep their gut healthy. 3. Chopped garlic in drinking water deters skin parasites from taking hold. 4. Mix some diatomaceous earth with moistened pellets - DE helps to kill intestinal worms. Keep your birds healthy!

02.01.2022 You can feel the summer is coming with the hot weather we started to have in Sydney. Consider installing dripper hoses (pictured) in your garden beds - they deliver water to the roots, which means very little is wasted, compared to overhead watering. You could also install a timer to enable watering when you are away on holidays! We have various irrigation equipment and plenty of water-holding mulches, come and check out the range, we help you to prepare your garden for summer.

02.01.2022 Autumn weather is slow to arrive this year, but when it does, it will be a busy time across Sydney gardens! Stock up on top quality of soil supplements, fertilisers and mulches now, so you are ready to dig in!
