08.01.2022 Now offering Hot Shoeing I can remember being very nervous the first time I fit a hot shoe to a horse, hot metal, sharp tools and a horse seemed risky, surely there was a good reason why some farriers choose to hot shoe and some don't. The benefits of Hot shoeing:... I have shod horses well with and without the use of the forge. One way isnt better than the other for every situation, but having choice let's me bring more options to my clients. Creating a perfectly level hoof will hold a shoe much better than one that is almost level. The hot shoe has evened out any variation in the hoof wall and created a gasket like seal with the shoe. If a hoof isn't level it's obvious when you are shoeing. When a hot shoe is fitted 1/8 of the hoof is melted, creating a perfect level fit shoe and seals off the cut hoof making it less likely to dry out in a dry environment or take in moisture and soften in a wet environment. The intense heat also tends to kill any potential fungi and bacteria that may cause a problem in the hoof (eg: white line disease). Thin, cracked, shelly or water logged hooves can also benefit from hot shoeing, as it seals the surface under the shoe, creating a tighter seat and better fit searing and sealing of the hoof.
