25.01.2022 Towards the end of Term 3 our Primary School cross country runners took part in the interschool IPSHA Carnival at John XXIII College. Our own Gidon S placed fourth in the Year 5 boys' division - out of a field of some 70 athletes - running a very strategic race. Mazal tov to Gidon and the rest of the cross country team for their participation and dedication to training on the Maccabi and Breckler ovals before the event.

25.01.2022 It is fitting that for his Barmitzvah, Saul lained the parsha of ‘Haazinu’ a parsha of song, for Saul is filled with music and song! Saul will play ‘Pugsley’ in our upcoming musical and is sure to light up the stage with his wonderful talents and a stage presence that belies his youth. Musical rehearsals have been fun as Saul gets to know students in other year levels, all working together towards a spectacular show. Saul’s Barmitzvah was ‘awesome’, a silent disco with big brother as the DJ. Saul loves to play fortnite and basketball and is enjoying Jewish Studies with Morah Steph and Drama classes with Mrs. Anastas. Mazal tov Saul! We are so proud of you!

25.01.2022 Year 7s Ethan G, Savion A and Dylan R designed, built and programed their robot to perform to music. Here's a snippet of them rocking it out with their creation at the RoboCup Junior competition!

24.01.2022 It is hard to believe that Rosh Hashanah is nearly here! But the sounds of the shofar tell us it is coming. Our Kindies were totally captivated when Rabbi Kitay visited, not only by the shofar, but also by his story about kindness. Thank you Rabbi Kitay for inspiring our Kindies to be kind in their actions and the things they say. #elcspotlight

23.01.2022 The Times of Israel has highlighted the home video of our own Carmel Primary student Bibi S practising ‘Avinu Malkeinu’ for his school concert as being one of the top ten highlights of 2020! Bibi’s in good company - other ‘top tenners’ include Jewish Nobel Prize winners, soon-to-be Jewish ‘First Husband’ Doug Emhoff and the Jewish scientists involved in producing a COVID vaccine. As The Times says, Bibi's sweet singing was the 'break from the heaviness of a pandemic High Holidays' the world needed. So true. We're so proud of Bibi and his teachers! Go to www.carmel.wa.edu.au//2020/september/they-teach-with-love/ for our story on Bibi's song.

23.01.2022 Today the Primary school hosted their annual athletics carnival. The weather held and all the children had a full energetic day filled with Ruach! Many thanks to all our spectators who came along to cheer our students on. Mazel Tov to Nevoh who took home the trophy and to everyone who participated and did their personal best. A well-deserved rest is in order. Have a wonderful Shabbat and keep an eye out for more photos to come on Monday!

They collaborated and created their designs from cardboard, then painted, decorated and decided on their advertising strategies. On Tuesday 3 November they shared their cardboard arcade with the rest of the Primary School, who loved it!

19.01.2022 As the 25th anniversary of the assassination of Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin zl approaches, the ZFA has organised a number of online events, the first being the Yitzhak Rabin Oration tonight at 5.00pm Perth time. This will be streamed on the ZFA website www.zfa.com.au/rabin and on the ZFA and SZCWA Facebook pages. Bar-Lev credits Rabin for his outstanding contributions in his last years as PM to make peace with the Palestinians and the Jordanians. 19.01.2022 Dylan says the best part of his Bar mitzvah was completing the Shule service where he lained Maftir, Haftorah and also davened Musaf. The joy of knowing he had done a great job (and made his parents and grandparents very proud) meant he could relish his Bar mitzvah party where he danced with his friends and family and was lifted up on a chair. Dylan enjoys maths with Mr George and HASS with Mr Raston - and when he’s not on the basketball court slam dunking baskets, he’s got his head in a non-fiction biography. Although Dylan lists achieving Runner-up Dux in Year 6 as his greatest achievement, we know that there are many more achievements to come for this young superstar. Diligent and capable, Dylan can accomplish whatever he sets his heart on and we just know he is destined for great things. Mazal Tov, Dylan!

19.01.2022 From our Principal Which of our five senses is the most needed in forming and maintaining strong, positive family relationships? Our Yiddishe grandmothers would probably say taste as they serve us another bowl of delicious chicken soup, lokshen and kneidel that fills our bellies and warms our hearts. But in a year when we have been kept apart from friends and family and all those who are not in our immediate household, weve had to cease our reliance on senses such as t...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Yesterday our year 1 students celebrated Rosh Hashanah together with their parents as part of our parent - student Jewish learning journey. They warmed our hearts with their beautiful singing and dancing and we are so proud of their first stage performance this year. The families engaged in a Rosh Hashanah quiz on kahoot as well as made a honey jar to take home for the upcoming chag. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and positivity on the faces of the children and parents were delighted to interact with their children in the classroom. Shana Tova!

16.01.2022 Our Sylvia and Harry Hoffman Hall was transformed for the 2020 Kindy Portfolio last night, with incredible art installations to view and beautiful welcoming picnic rugs laid out for families to share. There was not a dry eye in the house (not even for the teachers) as our beautiful Kindies shined brightly on the stage, ably performing several songs, in both English and Hebrew, before sharing precious time on their picnic rugs with their families, going through the expertly curated Portfolios. Mazal tov to Jaxon and his family who won the artwork raffle! We are all very envious! Well done Kindy stars, we are so proud of you!

Thanks to Doc Wauge for organising such a wonderful afternoon!

14.01.2022 Morah Debbie Posner, who has been at Carmel Primary School since 1999 (21 years!) and runs the Primary School’s amazing Torah Enrichment Program, will be profiled in our final Kesher of the year due out on 10 December. Not only does Morah Posner’s love of all things Torah shine from her, but it’s clear she transmits that enthusiasm to her students. This is a snippet of the Year 6 Torah Enrichment class choosing and then singing some of their favourite Morah Posner memory aid songs.

14.01.2022 From our Director of Jewish Studies To our dear Perth Jewish Community, Its been quite a year for Australia, for Israel and for the World. Here in WA we were spared the destruction caused by the bushfires and to a large degree, the devastating effects of COVID-19. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected across the globe from all manner of loss and harm. As we approach Rosh Hashanah, we pray for a speedy end to this current crisis and ask the Almighty to in...spire our brilliant doctors and researchers to find a successful vaccine that can be administered worldwide in an efficient and safe manner. We admire the governments of both Israel and of the UAE for the massive strides that they are taking to work towards a lasting peace in the Middle East. We hope and pray that this will be a catalyst for other governments in the region to follow suit. May the coming year be peaceful for the world, harmonious for society, bonding for our communities, loving for our families, connected to our God and true to ourselves. May this year, 5781, be one of health, strength and happiness for all. Let each and every one of us move forward to action those things that need change, improvement or development in our own family, community, country and in this beautiful but sometimes fragile world. Wishing a Shana Tova to the President, Board, Governors, Trustees, Principal, Staff, Parents and Students of Carmel School and to the entire Jewish Community of Perth and Am Yisrael. Kativa vechatima tova! Simon Lawrence See more

13.01.2022 What a fun and wonderful experience our ILP Food Technology students had with the Kindy and Prep this week! They used the culinary skills they have learned over the year to bake delicious garlic and cheese focaccia bread from scratch. They were so excited to share their baking talents with the Kindy and Prep students and it was a wonderful experience to walk across the oval and share these scrumptious snacks.. Before the Kindy and Prep were able to enjoy their snacks baked by Sam B, Louis G and other students they had to do 'netilat Yadayim" and recite the bracha which was beautiful and meaningful moment for everyone. Our High School students loved sharing their knowledge on other brachot with the younger students, who in turn loved spending time with 'the big kids!'

12.01.2022 There is a lot of Rosh Hashanah festivity in the air at Carmel! How lucky are our Preps, with this very special and buzzy incursion?

12.01.2022 Do you recognise anyone in these photos? Prep Teacher Morah Janine opened up her album of photos from a couple of decades ago (when she taught Kindy) and we've really found some treasures! Below, the Kindies visit PHC and Rabbi Freilich in September 1999. #rememberwhen #dorotcarmel

10.01.2022 Just in time for NAIDOC Week, our Kindies have completed their incredible collaborative artwork, inspired by the Indigenous season of Kambarang. The idea for the artwork came following their excursion to Kings Park, where they viewed the beautiful, emerging colours of Spring. Back in the classroom, our Kindies looked at different Indigenous artworks and were further inspired by the idea of dot painting. The giant canvas provided the opportunity for everyone to get involved, p...lus it allowed for a whole body workout - stretching, bending, crouching, crossing mid-line and, of course, working those fine motor skills! In the later stages of painting, students were invited to lie on a bench, placed strategically across the artwork, and added to the piece without fear of smudging. This certainly engaged the core muscles! The end result is phenomenal! What an experience for our lucky Kindies, and what talent they have! #elcspotlight See more

10.01.2022 Jonah loves the challenge of learning Maths, just like Mr George. Jonah loves Carmel, just like Mr George. But what they really have in common is their love of cats! Jonah looks after Chia, a black and white cat who is curious and fun (just like Jonah!) Jonah has been playing tennis for nine years - a large chunk of time for a young man who has just become Bar Mitzvah. For his Bar Mitzvah, Jonah lained the Maftir at PHC and had a fun roller skating party with his friends. Becoming a design technology wiz is Jonahs aim, combining his love of art and coding to achieve big things in the ever-changing world of technology. Jonah, the world is your oyster! Mazal Tov on your Bar Mitzvah!

08.01.2022 Last week, our Year 5s visited the Swan Valley Adventure Centre for team building activities. Each team was given an egg to protect throughout the visit and every group task rewarded students with objects needed to build a standing catapult. The catapult was used in the final challenge, to sling their egg into ‘new life’. Two new records were made by the Year 5 teams and one of the catapulted eggs was saved with a brave catch by our very own Liam! Kol hakavod to our Year 5s - we look forward to seeing their team skills in action as Year 6 leaders in 2021.

08.01.2022 In one of the most anticipated online lessons of the year, last Friday our Year 9s connected with the Prime Minister, The Hon. Scott Morrison MP, who delivered an update and Q&A session on politics. The questions posed covered topics as broad as climate change, how young people can make a difference, women in politics, the impact of Coronavirus, tax cuts and inspirational books or films the PM has enjoyed. We thank Vince Connelly MP and his team for setting up this opportunity, together with Mrs Russell, for our students! https://youtu.be/1xG3hSi0zL0

08.01.2022 As a part of Book Week our Preps read 'Goodbye House Hello House' by Margaret Wild and Ann James. They then extended on the book by drawing a picture of their house with them in it and included their address and house number. As the illustrator did in the book, they used black and white for the houses and water colour for the background. Such beautiful creations! We can't wait to show them off at the Prep Concert! #elcspotlight

07.01.2022 Last week we said farewell to our Class of 2020 at our Valedictory Celebration. We were so pleased to be able to hold this event and are grateful to the PHC for hosting us. 07.01.2022 On Thursday and Friday 3 and 4 September our Years 7-10 participated in the Winter ACC Sport Championship. Due to current restrictions our Term 2 after-school winter competition was postponed so the fixtures for all schools was condensed into two one-day carnivals. Carmel students showed excellent sportsmanship and we were very proud of our results! We had a participation approach where every student across the four year groups had the opportunity to be part of a team and enjoy a day of sport. Several of our teams finished in the top three. Mazal tov to our Years 7/8 Boys Badminton team who won the ACC Winter Badminton Championship and a big thanks to all everyone involved.

06.01.2022 Mazal tov to Ashri F who for the second time in as many years has placed first in the Science Talent Search Awards! Last year he won the Science Photography category and this year placed first in the Communication category. Ashri says the subject matter of his video - curiously called, 'Why You Should Pee on Your Feet in the Shower' - came from something humorous his teacher Mrs Poustie said in human biology class one day. Read more about that and the science behind Ashri's video title in next week's Kesher. In the meanwhile enjoy his animation, but be warned it contains some pretty specific information that might not be to everyone’s taste!!

06.01.2022 Earlier in the month, the Year 1s received a very suspicious letter via Mrs Osrin from an unknown source. In it, the person explained that she had lost her memories and needed the Year 1s’ help to find them. There was a map of Carmel School showing where she had been. After an exciting treasure hunt around the School, our students discovered ten ‘memories’ and, by a process of elimination, worked out that they belonged to Morah Shula! She was delighted with their findings and rushed to the Year 1 classroom to tell them about all her memories. If you ever lose your memory, our Year 1 detectives would be very happy to help you recover them!

06.01.2022 The Year 6.1 students attended Menora today to finish packing the Rosh Hashanah baskets and checking puzzles for the up coming garage sale on Sunday at the warehouse. The students were given a framed certificate to thank them for their amazing efforts. We raised over $500 for Menora at our Rosh Hashanah sale over the last 2 days excluding the sale of the cupcakes! What a team effort Year 6. Please continue to drop off food parcels at the front office.

05.01.2022 Recently the Year 9 cohort was fortunate enough to spend a few days on Machane Zooz. Machane Zooz is the Jewish Studies Camp that Carmel School annually hosts to teach us, the students, about various topics. The focus of our Year 9 camp was to learn about Shabbat and the impact our identity has on the world and our surroundings. On Thursday and Friday, we had detailed and insightful discussions within our family groups about our values and our morals as young Jewish people. W...e had an inspirational guest speaker, Linda Friedland who spoke to us about forming our opinions. We were also privileged enough to have an organization such as Cahoots visit us, who ran activities that helped us to be more empathetic towards others and their unknown situation. On Friday night, we all gathered at the school for a Kabbalat Shabbat Service, followed by a very yummy Shabbat dinner! On Saturday we gathered back at school for an afternoon and evening of fun activities and two more delicious meals! Camp was a great experience and everyone had the opportunity to take something away from it. Wed like to say a massive thank you to Mr Lawrence, all the Madrichim, Jewish Studies Staff and anyone involved in making this a very fun and educational camp! From, Dina Avichzer and Demi Leibowitz

Team ‘Brick Bots’ - Jordan R, Asher R and Naftali R - were worthy finalists!

03.01.2022 The IPSHA Interschool Swimming Carnival at Wesley in Week 7 of Term 1 was a roaring success for the Carmel swimming team. Everybody attending had trained hard for the event and performed exceptionally well on the day with a good number of ribbons coming our way. The high achievement in the freestyle relays was particularly pleasing, showing good depth in our swimming talent. Well done swimmers.

03.01.2022 On the last day of term, Thursday 25 March, the Year 5 class presented a wonderful Pesach play about getting ready for the Seder. It was polished and well performed and had the audience laughing out loud! They ended off with a mashup Pesach medley dance. Our Admin Committee ended off by delivering a slick slideshow of the highlights of Term 1 and then the second Mensch medal of 2021 was drawn out of the hat of many mensch recipients and went to Joshua K. 02.01.2022 John Winters, co-founder and CEO of Superhero, a new online ASX share trading app (touted as Australia’s cheapest online trading platform) was kind enough to send a message of encouragement and support to our Entrepreneur Program students recently. You will experience many hard lessons if you start your own business; failure is one of them. You need to own it. It is a lesson and you need to learn from that lesson and don't do it again, John says. How cool failure is integral to success! Read more about John and his links to Carmel School in our final Kesher of the year on 10 December.
