25.01.2022 Off the back of their inclusion in the MIFF 2020 programme, we are thrilled to reveal our poster for ELLIE AND ABBIE (AND ELLIE'S DEAD AUNT). A sweet coming of age drama focusing on coming out in high school, ELLIE AND ABBIE features Marta Dusseldorp, Rachel House, Sophie Hawkshaw, Zoe Terakes and is directed by Monica Zanetti. Made on modest budget, Carnival were engaged to create the key art after production had completed. As is often the case, photography featuring both l...ead cast members was limited and while early concepts focused upon the classroom setting, these failed to capture the cacophony of emotions experienced in adolescence. Our final image captures this but it needed elevation, so we developed a complex 3D scene featuring glitter streamers which ties into the a particular scene. By using 3D to completely create the environment Ellie and Abbie are immersed within, we were able to create a dreamlike and beautiful scene for the final one sheet poster. Coming soon to cinemas and part of the MIFF2020 programme: https://bit.ly/2ZpHVkQ Credits - Art Direction: Demi Hopkins. Illustration: Cassandra Chapman. 23.01.2022 NETFLIX has released online 5 important (and wonderful) indigenous feature films in celebration of NAIDOC week. We have had the privilege of creating the key art with Bunya for 4 / 5 and count these posters as some of our proudest achievements in film creative marketing. Mad Bastards soundtrack by the Pigram Brothers is fantastic too - check it if you're not familiar!

23.01.2022 With the upcoming 21st Italian Film Festival and the release of the poster, we're looking back on 10 years of key art we have designed for the festival in collaboration with Palace Cinemas. With a few exceptions, the film festival has sought to champion a single image from one of their leading films which captures the essence of Italian culture. In 2005 we set about developing a long lasting identity for the festival and we're thrilled to see this evolve over the past few yea...rs to solidify the Italian Film Festival as one of Australia's premier cultural film festivals. Thank you to the whole Palace team, and in particular Elysia Zeccola, for their on-going support and creative collaboration with the Carnival team #LaDolceVita #keyart

22.01.2022 We recently worked with director Catherine Hill to create key art for her indie feature SOME HAPPY DAY, which follows a homeless woman searching for a better life, and a social worker with troubles of her own. Set in St.Kilda, it tackles a complex subject with grace and compassion, and both lead actors (Peta Brady & Mary Helen Sassman) are excellent. Keep an eye out for this one. @SomeHappyDay... #movieposter #keyart #australianfilm #australianmovie #stkilda #catherinehill #somehappydayfilm See more

22.01.2022 In collaboration with @TransmissionFIlms, Carnival Studio refreshed the International key art for THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN for its Australian release. Additionally, we adapted the key art as a social motion poster. Based on the life of Professor James Murray (Mel Gibson) and his pursuit of compiling and writing the first Oxford English dictionary, and his unorthodox relationship with Dr William Minor (Sean Penn) who submitted over 10,000 entries while a patient at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. Catch it in cinemas February 20.

19.01.2022 Were so incredibly proud to have been the creative partners in designing key art (not to mention programmes, tickets, outdoor for many years) for Palace Cinemas and the Lavazza Italian Film Festival for at least 9 of the past 20 years of this incredible festivals history. Our creative business is built on close relationships with film makers, distributors and cinemas, and this is the perfect example of what we strive to achieve as a studio. Bravo Lavazza Italian Film Festival! Thanks for having us along

19.01.2022 Weve been blown away by the huge reaction to @transmissionfilms @ridelikeagirlmovie RIDE LIKE A GIRL and can feel this will be a big commercial success if the sold out previews, premieres and general online anticipation is any indication. 19.01.2022 Carnival creates a mystical journey into Japanese folklore. Were very proud to have been involved in marketing the incredible Japan Supernatural exhibition on now at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Working in partnership with the team at AGNSW, we designed and produced this short video, which takes the viewer on a journey into the colourful world of Japanese yokai and fantasy. The challenge was to design a piece that utilised the exhibition artworks in a sensitive and en...gaging way, whilst also creating a visual link to the exhibition branding. 18.01.2022 this will sound incredible in Dolby surround in the cinema

18.01.2022 Earlier this year we created key art for the Australian supernatural thriller SWEET RIVER (Directed by Justin McMillan). Debuting this week on Netflix, it has quickly risen to the Top 10 most-watched films in Australia - a great result for local independent cinema. https://www.carnivalstudio.com.au/work/sweet-river/... #movieposter #keyart #australianfilm

17.01.2022 We were recently commissioned to bring to life the International key art for THE GRUDGE for Sony Pictures Releasing (Australia). The project was technically challenging but we're thrilled with the results. Creating the hair motion from a graded, still, key image was a challenge but by using a variety of software and techniques we undertook the painstaking task of removing the hair from the underlying face, separated the hair into clumps / strands. Once the hair was separated ...the task of meticulously repainting the face followed. To aid in creating the look we were after, additional clumps of hair were sculpted in ZBrush using FiberMesh. This allowed us to generate a variety of hair clumps that we then render to static images. All imagery was then brought into After Effects to construct the eye effects and composite the clumps of hair. A combo of animation techniques were employed to achieve the look, including scripted bone like structures applied the clumps of hair in-order to automate much the dynamic hair simulation, coupled with keyframe animation to give a more nuanced control over the look. The end result brings subtle, haunting emotion to static key art. Keep an eye out in cinema foyers at Event, Hoyts and Village cinemas! Credits: Nicholas Sullivan, Mike James

03.01.2022 Five years in the making... We are very proud to reveal our latest studio key art creative 'Carnival del los Sueños', or The Carnival of Dreams. . . . This photographic series has been a labour of love for our creative team, as well as our key collaborators Mark Rogers (photography) and Ingrid Weir (styling). Designed purely as a creative outlet for Carnival Studio, it has grown to envisage a lost world where our travelling carnies are presented away from the stage, in a natu...ral and unguarded manner. We took inspiration from the travelling circuses of the American mid-west in the early 1900s, and the raw intensity of early tin-type and reportage photography, with the notable mention of the Sydney police mug shots from the 1920s. Featuring original Carnie cast members Panda Likoudis and Maeve Dermody, we introduced new characters including Damian Walshe-Howling and Hayley Mitchellhill-Miller. We shot the original Carnie series on location in Centennial Park, whereas the new series was captured in at Sun Studios, affording greater lighting control. The scenes were composited largely from custom-designed 3D elements, with all modelling, texturing and rendering entirely within our team. This process has allowed us to create photo-real environments not possible (without spending tens of thousands of dollars), and we are incredibly proud of the final images. A common issue in key art development is the lack of clean plate environments (shot during production) from which we can build a scene for actors. We rely heavily on stock photography for atmospheric elements, sky replacements and landscape extensions. This project was an experiment in pushing the boundaries on what is possible within hi-res, photo-real 3D environments and is increasingly playing a part in our key art development for film and television projects. A huge thank you goes to Mark Rogers, Ingrid Weir, Mike James, the Carnival team and of course the incredible cast who generously have supported this passion project. If you're interested in reading more about the project and how it was produced, please visit our website https://www.carnivalstudio.com.au/w/carnival-key-art-shoot/ #keyart

02.01.2022 After seven years as Studio Manager at Carnival Studio, today we sadly say goodbye to Cath Wadling, who is moving over to a role in performing arts. Cath has been a vital part of Carnival - working tirelessly to ensure campaigns run smoothly, and always delivering with great warmth, humour and passion. I know our clients will miss her greatly, as will we , but for many years we all shared a truly unique and wonderful team environment, which Cath played a central role in fostering. I wish her all the very best in her next adventure! Thank you for everything Cath, from all of us Carnies!
