25.01.2022 Rise and shine, gorgeous! Even though I'm not an early riser, I love mornings. For the promise they hold for the amazing day that is yet to unfold. Before things have had a chance to go to shit. During the week, before the workday begins, my mornings tend to pan out like this:... 1. Down to the kitchen to make a cup of bancha (see earlier post for tutorial) 2. Breakfast 3. Walk Hugo the fur baby 4. 24.01.2022 Photographed at my local fruit and veg shop Louis' on Glebe Point Road, I love this picture because it has some of my favourite vegetables! Yes you read that right- literally kale, broccoli and broccolini are three of my favourite vegetables. Along with cauliflower, rocket, radish, daikon, kohlrabi, turnips, cabbage, mustard greens watercress, brussels sprouts, bok choy and other Asian greens, they belong to the brassica family of vegetables. ... These veggies extra good for you because they contain sulforaphane, a potent compound which protects the liver by boosting detoxification pathways and antioxidant levels. In particular, broccoli sprouts is the richest source of sulforaphane, and it is also available in capsule or powder form as nutritional supplement though I always prefer to eat the real food. If you feel like your liver could use some pick-me up, include at least 1 serve of the above mentioned vegetables in your diet every day. . . . #nutrition #nutritionist #macrobiotic #plantbased #seasonal #wholefoods #naturopathy #herbalmedicine #evidencebased #holistic #spring #spring2020 #springclean #cleanse #detox #detoxify #weightloss #naturopathy #yoga See more

23.01.2022 Tea making tutorial video 1. Put tea leaves into teapot. 2. Pour hot water into said teapot. 3. Wait and drink. ... My absolute favorite tea, which I drink day and night, during all seasons and for all occasions, is bancha. Bancha has several meanings, but the kind I prefer is actually kuki hojicha (or sometimes just called kukicha) which is made from roasted stems and twigs of the green tea plant. It has a mild, toasty flavor and doesnt have the astringency that you find in regular green tea, which comes from the tannins. It is very low in caffeine so can be had at any time of the day, helps with digestion of food so its a good accompaniment to meals. You can typically get up to 3 infusions from the same teapot. I buy mine directly from @ippodotea a centuries old Japanese tea shop in Kyoto via their website, but if you are not that hardcore, look out for health food stores and @ikuwholefood stores selling @spiralfoods kukicha. #tea #macrobiotic #greentea

22.01.2022 Have you ever wondered why there is no hormonal contraceptive pill for men? Surely given all the technological advances we have had since the inception of the female contraceptive pill in 1960, we could have come up with something as simple as the pill for men! Turns there are a few in development stages, and they work very similarly to the pill, with similar safety and efficacy levels. The oral formulations include DMAU (PMID: 30252061) and 11-beta-MNTDC, and there... is a topical gel formulation called NES/T, but they all work similarly. Made of a combination of synthetic testosterone and progesterone, they block the communication from the brain to the testicles, thereby reducing testosterone production and preventing sperm from maturing. As can be expected, interfering with natural hormones in the male body does cause some side effects such as lowered libido and erectile dysfunction, and potentially more serious long-term side-effects that are not yet known. Serious side effects caused by oral contraceptive pills in the female body are well documented, which include weight gain, mood disturbances, blood clots, high cholesterol, gut and immune dysregulation, thyroid problems and more. It is likely that the real reason why we do not yet have a hormonal contraceptive pill for men available on the market is more social: women generally bear the burden of contraception in our society (PMID:23116957), and therefore, drug companies arent interested in developing a product that is not likely to be very popular. . . . #naturopath #naturopathy #sydneynaturopath #naturopathsydney #herbs #herbalmedicine #nutrition #nutritionist #sydneynutritionist #nutritionistsydney #naturalmedicine #holistichealth #holistichealing #prevention #evidencebased #holistic #hormones #oralcontraceptivepill See more

22.01.2022 Did you know that prolonged emotional or physical stress increases levels of cortisol which releases extra energy source from your liver, leading to increased fat mass around the middle, decreased muscle mass? This in turn leads to insulin resistance (See part 1 of this five part series!). Chronically elevated cortisol can decrease protective antibody levels in your gut. These antibodies help to maintain the immunological defence and mucus membrane health so decreased level...s of these babies can lead to dysbiosis and leaky gut, increasing systemic inflammation and leading to you guessed it- weight gain. How do I know if stress is negatively affecting my health? Common symptoms of too much stress is adrenal burnout- which includes fatigue, low libido, irregular or absent periods, mood changes, digestive problems, and sleep problems. Your body perceives physical and emotional stress as the same thing- so aside from being stressed about the usual things, over-exercise over an extended period of time can also be detrimental to your health. A good way to see how your body is coping with stress is to do a salivary cortisol test, or DUTCH test which shows you how you are metabolising your cortisol. How can I reduce stress? Look for ways to identify and reduce the external sources of stress, and implement long-term changes to improve your ability to cope with stress. These can include having more down-time in your routine through meditation, gentle yoga and daily walks, time spent in nature, evening magnesium baths, aromatherapy, rest and relaxation, play time, to name a few. There are lovely herbal medicines which can quickly calm down your nervous system and support your adrenal function, such as withania, lemon balm, licorice and passionflower. . . . #naturopath #naturopathy #sydneynaturopath #naturopathsydney #herbs #herbalmedicine #nutrition #nutritionist #sydneynutritionist #nutritionistsydney #naturalmedicine #holistichealth #holistichealing #prevention #evidencebased #holistic #weightloss #adrenal #stress #cortisol

20.01.2022 "Cur moriatur homo cui salvia crescit in horto?" in Latin, it translate to "Why should a man die whilst sage grows in his garden?" Sage (Salvia officinalis) is one of the most widely used herbs in our repertoire, used since ancient times. The name comes from Latin salvere, meaning to be saved. Charlemagne considered sage to be the most important of all medicinal plants, and Culpepper associated it with Jupiter, the King of Gods in Roman mythology. Sage has a variety... of uses in modern herbal medicine. Due to its drying quality, sage has been used traditionally to reduce excessive secretions- such as excessive perspiration (hence useful during menopause), salivation, diarrhoea, and excessive menstrual bleeding. The volatile oils in the leaves give sage strong anti-microbial properties so it is useful in infections of the mouth, tongue or throat as gargle. Culinarily, it is excellent with roast pumpkin. . . . #naturopath #naturopathy #sydneynaturopath #naturopathsydney #herbs #herbalmedicine #nutrition #nutritionist #sydneynutritionist #nutritionistsydney #naturalmedicine #holistichealth #holistichealing #prevention #evidencebased #holistic #sage See more

20.01.2022 The last month of winter has finally dropped here in the southern hemisphere... I mean, August - already?! Traditionally, winter has been considered a time of rest, meditation, refining spiritual essence, and storing physical energy, in the form of a little added weight. So the extra padding you have gained over winter is perfectly normal. Phew. Key foods to eat during this season are hearty soups, warming grains such as buckwheat, r...oasted nuts, and it is the best time to eat a little more animal products such as meat and seafood, if you are not 100% plant-based. Use warming spices such as ginger, cinnamon, garlic, and vegetables in the onion family liberally, and avoid raw foods and too much fruit. However, as we march on towards spring and the weather gets warmer, it is a good idea to start dialling back on animal products such as meat and dairy, and introduce lighter foods such as steamed vegetables and small amounts of raw vegetables to your meals. . . #nutrition #nutritionist #macrobiotic #plantbased #seasonal #wholefoods #winter See more

18.01.2022 What do I eat? Whilst I follow the broad brushstrokes of the macrobiotic tradition, I don't adhere strictly to its prescribed rules. (Because there. ARE. SO. MANY. RULES.) Flexibility, on the other hand, is a virtue I rate highly. On a daily basis, my food is largely plant-based, with lots of whole grains, vegetables, plant-based protein sources like tofu, tempeh, beans and lentils. I do better when I include some seafood from time to ti...me. But everyone is different. When your body and mind are truly integrated and thriving, you instinctively know what sort of foods work for you, and what doesn't. Some people thrive on wholly plant-based diets, others don't. The reason why many people cannot tolerate certain plant-based foods such as grains, beans, legumes and high FODMAPs food is likely to be poor gut function, such as low stomach acid, dysbiosis, increased intestinal permeability, SIBO and more. Luckily these conditions can be treated quite efficiently with naturopathy using herbal medicine, targeted probiotics and nutritional supplements. If you are having these symptoms, I recommend that you get your shit tested to look at levels of healthy and pathogenic bacteria, yeast, virus and other organisms, as well as inflammation and digestive markers in your gut. 17.01.2022 Do you get sugar cravings? Then eat more carbs! Shocking, I know! By carbs, I mean good quality, slow-releasing, complex carbohydrates from sources such as whole grains like brown rice, oats, quinoa, buckwheat, millet, and whole-wheat sourdough bread and pasta. Other forms of healthy carbohydrates include starchy vegetables like sweet potato and pumpkin. ... Aim for one serving of above-mentioned complex carbohydrates with each meal, and your sugar cravings should reduce. Our body is incredibly intelligent, and naturally craves what it needs- so if you are consistently avoiding healthy carbs, then it will demand that you give it a quick fix in the form of sugar which is absorbed basically instantly into the blood stream. Carbohydrates is one of the essential macro nutrients that your body needs, and restricting intake over a sustained period of time can cause a stress response in the body, which may look like: - Absent or irregular periods - Insomnia, or other sleep problems - Fatigue - Mood disturbances such as anxiety - Low thyroid symptoms such as hair loss, feeling cold, brittle nails and hair, inability to lose weight - Poor recovery after exercise Another key benefit of eating whole grains and starchy vegetables is that they are rich sources of fibre, which we know is essential to keep your gut happy and your poop pooping. by talented @sooz_abed, at the wonderful @brickfieldsbakery in Chippendale. #carbsarelife #nutrition

16.01.2022 Did you know that for women, intermittent fasting may not be as beneficial as it is for men? One study showed that blood sugar control actually worsened among female subjects compared to males after three weeks of intermittent fasting (PMID: 15833943). Female bodies are extremely sensitive to calorie restriction and over a prolonged period, it can impair your hormonal balance, leading to irregular or absent periods, poor bone density and more (PMID: 25201001). So the mo...ral of the story? Eat well, eat regularly, and eat breakfast, ladies! Breakfast should be warm, nourishing and savoury, to give you sustained energy for the day and gently support your digestive system. 15.01.2022 Why detox? As the key organ of detoxification of the body, your liver works hard to keep you well and healthy. In a perfect world where we only ate organic food, lived and moved in harmony with nature and seasons, our liver and other organs of elimination would function in perfect order. However, we live in a toxic world where exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals and synthetic substances is unavoidable, not to mention our daily int...ake of processed food, sugar, alcohol, prescription medications, antibiotics, food additives and preservatives. 13.01.2022 Naturally fermented miso, made from soy beans, has traditionally been used to support healthy digestive and immune function thanks to the beneficial bacteria and enzymes. When making miso soup, add the paste at the end of cooking and never boil the soup, as this kills the beneficial bacteria. In addition, genistein, an isoflavone found in soybeans has shown impressive anti-cancer activities in in-vitro and animal studies. Levels of genistein are generally ...higher in fermented soy products compared to unfermented soybeans. I always use organic @spiralfoods or @carwariorganic brown rice miso paste at home. 12.01.2022 Another reason for your weight gain, or inability to lose weight may be due to thyroid problems. The thyroid gland is easily damaged by poor lifestyle and stress, leading to suboptimal thyroid function, or Hashimotos thyroiditis. Thyroid problems are incredibly common, and you need to test the levels of all your thyroid hormones and thyroid autoantibodies to achieve an accurate diagnosis. How do I know if I have thyroid problems? Symptoms vary, but they can include w...eight gain, hair loss, cold extremities, mood changes, gut problems, low energy, and irregular periods. Your risk increases if there is a family history of thyroid conditions. But dont guess, test! The best way to accurately assess the health of your thyroid function is by a standard blood test of TSH, T3, T4, reverse T3, and thyroid auto antibodies. How can I treat thyroid problems? There are many herbal and nutritional remedies to support healthy thyroid function while also addressing the underlying drivers of your thyroid problem. Some common nutritional support for healthy thyroid function include iodine, zinc, iron and selenium, and herbal remedies include echinacea, withania and coleus, though you definitely need to consult a professional herbalist or naturopath to get your formula right. . . . #naturopath #naturopathy #sydneynaturopath #naturopathsydney #herbs #herbalmedicine #nutrition #nutritionist #sydneynutritionist #nutritionistsydney #naturalmedicine #holistichealth #holistichealing #prevention #evidencebased #holistic #weightloss #thyroid #hasimotos

10.01.2022 And finally, welcome to the last post of this five part series! I have saved the best for last- did you know that hormonal imbalance caused by the oral contraceptive pill, stress, or perimenopause can cause weight gain? For instance, having healthy estrogen levels produced by your ovaries is essential for maintaining health weight. Low circulating estrogen levels can cause your body to compensate by increasing the conversion of a different type of estrogen from fat tissue..., which triggers the body to slow fat loss. How do I know if I have hormonal issues? Your periods is the best indicator of your hormonal health. If you have heavy, absent, painful, irregular periods, PMS, bloating and mood changes around your period, or you have been on the oral contraceptive for a long time, then it is likely that your hormones need some TLC. The best way to check is to do a blood test on day 3 of your cycle (day 1 is the first day of menstruation) to check your oestrogen levels, and at day 21 (or about a week before your next period) to check your progesterone levels. How do I treat my hormone problems? Due to the complex nature of female hormonal cascades, it is best to consult a qualified naturopath or herbalist to get your hormones into balance. Some of the treatment strategies will include adopting a healthy diet to ensure you have the adequate nutrients to make healthy hormones, optimising gut and liver function to ensure you are properly clearing the hormones out of your body, supporting your adrenals and improving the communication between your brain and ovaries using herbal medicines, nutrients and lifestyle modifications. Maintaining healthy weight is one of the best ways to ensure long-term health, and to prevent chronic disease. However, the number on the scale or what dress size you are is not the best indicator of your health. The aim of naturopathic care is to improve your overall health and well-being on physical, mental and emotional levels so that you can fulfil your lifes purpose in the here and now.

10.01.2022 Hello! This is a photo of me lovingly gazing at my gorgeous doggo Hugo, while he lovingly gazes at my lunch. I feel incredibly blessed to have found myself in a career that I love, and one that brings me genuine fulfillment and joy. It was not such an easy journey though! (But nothing worth doing is ever easy, so they say ) Many moons ago after graduating with a law degree, I worked for the government in various public policy areas. Over the years of working in this... high-stress job for which I was incredibly ill-suited, I noticed that my health was deteriorating as I was becoming increasingly unhappy. This was the start of my journey to health, using natural therapies which provided gentle and effective solutions. What started as a personal health journey became a radical career change and new-found life mission, as I realised that I wanted to help other people to find health and wellness. My story is not so unusual among naturopaths! Many of us have found it as a second, or third career path after having shitty or unfulfilling jobs early on. I am so grateful that I found my way to it eventually. I am passionate about naturopathic medicine and its transformative power to bring positive changes to peoples lives in so many ways, as it did to mine. . . . #naturopath #naturopathy #sydneynaturopath #naturopathsydney #herbs #herbalmedicine #nutrition #nutritionist #sydneynutritionist #nutritionistsydney #homeopathy #naturalmedicine #holistichealth #holistichealing See more

09.01.2022 Yes, they are both delicious salty goodness, a.k.a. soy sauce. But wait, there's more... Traditional shoyu is made with whole wheat, soybeans and sea salt, which are naturally fermented with the spores of Aspergillus over many months in wooden casks. It has a complex, umami-rich flavour to dishes, and general yumminess to everything. In contrast, what is commonly sold as soy sauce in supermarkets is made using hexane-defatted soybean me...al and sodium benzoate as preservative, using accelerated methods and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel or fibre glass tanks. The end result is a far inferior product that lacks the complexity and depth of shoyu. Unless you have Coeliacs disease, there is no need to avoid shoyu in cooking even if you are normally sensitive to gluten. Tamari is often used as a gluten-free substitute for shoyu, and it is traditionally made by collecting the dark liquid that pooled on the surface of fermenting miso. As tamaris flavour comes from amino acids, it is used for dishes that require longer cooking at high temperatures, such as baking and long-simmering. Shoyu on the other hand, owes much of its flavour to natural alcohol produced by wheat fermentation, so it is used to flavour dishes at the end, or almost the end of the cooking process, or served at the table as a condiment next to the finished dish. I recommend organic shoyu and tamari from @spiralfoods. #macrobiotic #plantbased #vegan #shoyu #tamari #japanesefood #cooking See more

07.01.2022 Yesterday I caught up with a friend who had recently been through an incredibly stressful time at work, as a vet. Caring for others, being responsible for the health and wellbeing of other living beings, and especially now when negative emotions are compounded by the uncertainty the current state of things, can take a lot out of our own reserves. 07.01.2022 Are you eating well, exercising regularly and still cant seem to lose weight, or even worse, steadily gaining weight? While most weight gain can be attributed to more calories in vs calories out, especially from sneaky calories hidden in fruit juice, alcoholic beverages and processed food, some people experience weight gain or inability to lose weight despite adhering to a healthy eating plan. Lets unpack some of the common, hidden drivers of weight gain and what you can... do to take back control of your health. The first common problem is insulin resistance. This occurs when your cells stop being responsive to insulin, which results in higher levels of blood glucose circulating in your blood, leading to increased fat mass and weight gain. Insulin resistance usually occurs from a sedentary lifestyle coupled with high sugar intake, and your risk increases if there is a family history of diabetes. How do I know if I have insulin resistance? Aside from weight gain, other signs and symptoms include high fasting blood glucose and high fasting insulin levels in a blood test, bloating, fatigue, increased hunger and low mood. How can I treat insulin resistance? The best treatment for insulin resistance is weight loss- ironic, I know! In order to help you achieve this, adopt a low glycemic index diet, and incorporate regular resistance and cardiovascular exercise into your routine. You will have to remove all forms of sugar, including fruit, from your diet if insulin resistance is a problem. We also have many herbs such as cinnamon, fenugreek, goats rue, gymnema, and nutrients such as magnesium, chromium and zinc to help you combat the sugar cravings and improve insulin sensitivity naturally. . . #naturopath #naturopathy #sydneynaturopath #naturopathsydney #herbs #herbalmedicine #nutrition #nutritionist #sydneynutritionist #nutritionistsydney #naturalmedicine #holistichealth #holistichealing #prevention #evidencebased #holistic #weightloss #diabetes #insulinresistance

The sweet taste still stimulates an insulin response, and you may end up with worse sugar cravings than before! Have a cup of cinnamon tea when the craving hits. Have a small serving of low-sugar fruit instead, such as berries (but not blueberries) and melons. Make small, incremental changes. Halve your intake of sugar and sugary food every three days. 04.01.2022 The standard western diet, processed food, alcohol, many medications, stress or infections can lead to an imbalance in the gut microbiome composition in our digestive tract, which is called dysbiosis. Dysbiosis causes low-grade inflammation in our gut, causing increased intestinal permeability, and the bacterial particles escape the gut and enter the blood stream, causing low-grade inflammation systemically. This is a major contributing factor in weight gain, non-alcoholi...c fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, obesity and auto-immune diseases, and many many more. How do I know if I have dysbiosis? You can do a stool test to get an accurate picture of the state of your gut microbiome. Common signs include bloating, constipation or diarrhoea, mood disturbances, poor liver function and joint pain. How can I treat dysbiosis? Firstly remove the drivers of dysbiosis by adopting a whole-food, plant based diet which is low in sugar and fat, and get your stress under control. Depending on the level of dysbiosis, your naturopath may prescribe herbal antimicrobials to bring balance back into your gut, probiotics to help colonise the gut with healthy bacteria, and herbs and nutrients to heal the damaged mucous membrane. . . . #naturopath #naturopathy #sydneynaturopath #naturopathsydney #herbs #herbalmedicine #nutrition #nutritionist #sydneynutritionist #nutritionistsydney #naturalmedicine #holistichealth #holistichealing #prevention #evidencebased #holistic #weightloss #gut #gutmicrobiome #digestion

03.01.2022 Let's talk about gut, baby! I know us natural health types go on about the importance of gut health, but that's only because it's true. All of our cells are made up of the nutrients that absorb from the food that we eat. In order to properly absorb the nutrients, we need a healthy, functioning digestive system. ... A lot of the waste products including our hormones, are processed by the liver then ultimately eliminated by the gut. If you suffer from mineral deficiencies, experience bloating, see undigested foods in your stool, or you suffer constipation or diarrhoea on a regular basis, your gut may be in need of a little TLC. That is why during my Spring Cleanse and Detox Program, week 1 is all about the gut and digestion. We use yoga therapy to open up the front and optimise your digestive function, and instil dietary changes to promote good gut health, including: eating slowly, mindfully and chewing well including plenty of plant-based foods to feed the good bacteria (such as my tempeh rice paper roll as pictured) removing alcohol, sugar, saturated fats and excessive meat For more information about my Spring Cleanse and Detox program and to sign up, head over to my website carolinekimnaturopathy.com/spring-detox . . . #guthealth #digestion #dysbiosis #sibo #leakygut #digetivehealth #macrobiotic #macrobi #spring #spring2020 #springclean #cleanse #detox #detoxify #weightloss #naturopathy #yoga #nutrition #nutritionist #macrobiotic #plantbased #seasonal #wholefoods See more
