25.01.2022 Caroline Chisholm Society acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the traditional owners of the land that we work on. We pay our respects to elders, past and present. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC week 2020 is celebrating that it Always was, Always will be.

23.01.2022 The city is finding creative ways to navigate restrictions!

22.01.2022 It is National Child Protection week and with the number of children going into out of home care rapidly increasing, we need to work on how to do better. Tash is a young survivor of family violence who endured a significant portion of her childhood in out of home care. She knows first hand how broken the system is and is incredibly brave to be sharing her story. This animation she wrote and produced will raise awareness and hopefully inspire many other young people to speak up and share their story. We can learn a lot from those with lived experience. Well done Tash WARNING: this video contains content that might be distressing for some viewers. https://vimeo.com/336007744?ref=em-share

18.01.2022 The Society welcomes the Victorian Government on their announcement in launching the single biggest investment in social housing in the history of Victoria - Big Housing Build. The Victorian Government's goal is to create a sustainable housing system that will provide homes and create communities for generations to come. The Society's goal is to see housing needs met as a priority focus to provide stability, permanency, and safety for mothers and their children. ... We know #housingfirst means we can work with the complexities impacting on mum and her children including, early parenting skills, being connected and belonging to a community, improving mental health and wellbeing. Housing First principles acknowledge the basic right to housing that promotes the dignity and wellbeing of the mother and her children as a family. The $5.3 billion Big Housing Build promises to deliver 12,000 new homes with the aim to create an average of 10,000 jobs a year for the next four years. This initiative will be supported with a newly established Homes Victoria to lead the Big Housing Build, including $26B in housing assets currently providing housing for more than 116,000 Victorians. The Society will continue its advocacy in this area, with particular focus on the needs of the hundreds of women and their children who continue to be left behind on housing initiatives. #housingfirst Richard Wynne MP Danny Pearson MP for Essendon Luke Donnellan MP James Merlino Martin Foley MP Ingrid Stitt MP Kaushaliya Vaghela MP

18.01.2022 Each one of our new mums receives this gift so that bubba goes home in a brand new outfit. Everything in it is new. The blanket, matinee jacket, hat, and teddy are knitted with love by our wonderful volunteers. We are currently short of the muslin wraps, newborn onesies, and singlets. If you have new ones of these - we would be most grateful.

18.01.2022 Dear Pat! I didn't get to see you today when you dropped off boxes of handmade clothes and rugs and pj's ... they are so lovely and we are very grateful for the countless hours you put into these.... Just incredible!

16.01.2022 The Society views the removal of babies and children from their families as the most invasive, least effective and most expensive public policy intervention one can consider. There is urgency in this work going forward with the emerging crisis in out of home placements for Victorian children. This is acutely concerning for the current situation of at-risk and vulnerable women and the status of women expecting babies and engagement with child protection. "Thousands more ch...ildren are likely to be placed in out-of-home care due to the coronavirus pandemic, but advocates for minors say it is a human tragedy that could be avoided. A report commissioned by Victoria’s largest child and family services organisation, Berry Street, found that in the most severe scenario recurring virus outbreaks resulting in long periods of lockdown the number of children in out-of-home care would more than double from almost 12,000 to 27,500 within six years." https://www.theage.com.au//pandemic-impacts-could-push-tho

12.01.2022 We are excited to be announcing that we will be able to receive donations again from our wonderful community. Our ability to receive and distribute Material Aid has changed this year and decisions are always being made inline with Government directions. It has felt like a long road to this point. Our Caroline Springs office is CLOSED until further notice. So to target our current specific needs, if your children have grown out of the following sizes and they are clean and still in great condition, please drop them to our door on any Friday between 10am-1pm - beginning next week the 13th November. 0000 000 2 3 4 5 If you have new children’s clothes, any size up to age 5, we would be grateful to accept those. 04.01.2022 At Caroline Chisholm Society we work to keep mums and their children together because we believe that is the best outcome for all. Early intervention can and does help. A report released last week outlines the current situation with children in out of home care. 12,000 Victorian children in care, with a projected 8% increase each year. This will mean there could be 23,000 children in out of home care by 2025.
