25.01.2022 The let down reflex is characterised by * a tingling feeling in your breasts * a sudden feeling of fullness * milk dripping from the other boob... * a change in your baby’s sucking pattern from the short-sharp sucks to a long deep rhythmic suck as the milk begins to flow. Some mothers find their let down super unpleasant; verging on a painful experience, while others feel nothing; both of which is completely normal Do/did you notice your let down? Beautiful of @dicolaaa

23.01.2022 Who here was told whilst in the hospital - by a midwife - that your fresh newborn needs to learn how to sleep in the bassinet on their own? I certainly was! And... I naively believed them. I thought something was wrong with my bubba boy because he would cry if he wasn’t on my boobs or if he wasn’t in our arms. This kind of advice is wrong & needs to stop. Your new bubba has been snug as a bug in your tummy for 9 months you simply cannot expect him to now feel at ease falling asleep on a hard mattress, with bright lights, no movement & on his own. Cuddle your baby every bloody minute in those first few weeks! They don’t need to learn how to sleep without you. They need to know you’re there for them & that your arms are their safe place. Sleeping unassisted comes later down the track when it’s developmentally ready. A newborn needs to be close to you whilst they learn about this new outside world - @pinterest See more

21.01.2022 One common issue faced by a new mother is that she will be lead to believe that there are specific rules around how to manage her baby’s sleep and behaviour. Th...ese rules are outlined in great detail in popular baby books. She is given these books during her pregnancy by well-meaning friends and told: you HAVE to read this! So she does. Because she wants to be the best mother she can be. She wants to do the right thing by her baby. According to the books, these rules include, but are not limited to: Babies should sleep 7-7. Babies should not cat nap, they must nap for at least an hour. Babies should only nap in a cot. Babies should not nap at the breast or in your arms. Babies should only feed every 3 hours. Babies shouldn’t feed at night, once they reach a certain age or weight. Babies should self-settle and not fall asleep with any assistance. Babies should be fed only if they are doing a hungry cry. But not if they have fed in the last few hours. And if it’s actually a protest cry they should be ignored... This new mother is extremely vulnerable and impressionable. So of course she believes that these rules are firm. Factual. Based on science. Why would she doubt the author’s credibility? If it wasn’t true, then why is the book so popular? So without a second thought, she sets out to be a good mother and follow the rules. Except that the rules suck. And her baby must be broken, or maybe she is just shit at this parenting gig because she can’t seem to manage to make her baby go 3 hours between feeds. And she can’t seem to settle her baby with just a shhh and a pat on the bottom. And she really can’t bear to listen to her baby protest for 10 minutes so she can win the battle to make her baby sleep at the proper time, in the proper place. So rather than toss the book in the recycling bin (or the fire), she blames herself and she blames her baby. Misery descends. Desperation creeps in. All enjoyment evaporates. But then one day she realises something. There are whispers out there of another way. A different way. And it blows her mind. There is a woman at her mother’s group who holds her baby ALL the time. And feeds him whenever he fusses. She’s not following the rules... And she doesn’t seem too worried about it. And then there’s the friend who shares pictures on Facebook of her baby sleeping at her breast and in her bed... She’s not following the rules either, and she seems so happy. There is also the blog that talks about how it’s OK to follow baby’s lead and respond to them straight away when they cry. Maybe that blog was onto something... And then there is that family member, who mentioned in passing to ignore the book. To just enjoy the cuddles and do whatever you have to do to get her to sleep. Suddenly this new mother realises that actually, the rules in the books aren’t rules at all. They are just someone’s opinion of how things should be done. They’re not evidence-based. They are not set in stone. And best of all... they are not mandatory. This new mother realises that actually, she can do what feels right for her and her baby. She can cuddle, snuggle, feed and indulge in her baby as much as she likes. She can follow her baby’s lead. She can respond to her baby’s cries the way her body and heart tells her to respond. She can do it all without a hint of guilt because this is her journey. And she and her baby are the only ones who get to make the rules. Not the books

17.01.2022 TO WHAT AGE SHOULD I BREASTFEED MY BABY OR TODDLER? Whilst the personal decision of how long you should breastfeed your baby is entirely a mutual decision between you and your baby, the Australian and World Health Authorities all recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of a baby’s life, and thereafter continued breastfeeding until 2 years or beyond, with the addition of nutritious family foods & fluids. 16.01.2022 ARE THERE ANY BENEFITS IN CONTINUING TO BREASTFEED MY TODDLER? Breastfeeding a toddler holds many benefits; it provides ongoing close contact of Mother and Child and is a great way to comfort a toddler. Breastfeeding toddlers also benefit from high quality nutritional intake of a tailored made, living fluid that is high in protective antibodies and increased nutritional components such as Energy, Protein, Calcium, Vitamin A, Folate, B12, & Vitamin C to promote brain develo...pment and physical growth, as well as boosting immunity and prevention of illness. @thelittlemilkbar_ #breastfeeding #breastfeedingtips #nursing #breastfeedinggoals #ibclc #lactationconsultant #baby #mumsofinstagram

15.01.2022 The World Health Organisation (WHO), recommends exclusively breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant’s life, promoting optimal growth, development and health, after which time breastfeeding should continue until the age of two years or beyond with the addition of adequate and nutritious family foods. Breastmilk forms an essential basis for an infant’s/young child's early nutritional intake. However, at around 9 months of age infants are often having 3 regular mea...ls plus 1 snack and family foods will begin to be offered before breastfeeds. Along with the normal introduction of family foods, infant’s typically reduce their breastfeeding frequency and intake volumes may be reduced, however nutrients and antibodies remain high and continue to protect an infants and young children. Family foods should be all about exploration and fun before they are one! @ Pinterest - https://pin.it/5bxfr3nfo74nq3 #breastfeeding #ibclc #lactationconsultant #theboobfairy #solids #nutrition #babiesofinstagram #mumsofinstagram #motherhood #motherhoodunplugged #cutebaby #firstfoods #BLW #babyledweaning #babyfood

15.01.2022 Do babies need scheduled breastfeeds and what is normal? This is a question I get asked a lot and the simple answer is no. Scheduled breastfeeds are no longer recommended as breastfeeds vary in volume and fat content at different times of the day and night, with normal clustering or higher fat content feeds in the evening. Periods between breastfeeds may vary between 2-5 hours with anywhere between 6-10 feeds in a 24 hour period. Breastfeeds are always best offered in resp...onse to your baby’s hunger cues and in an active stage of alertness when they can fully participate in feed time and more importantly, enjoy the bonding time between the two of you #IBCLC #breastfeeding #feedtimes #baby #newmum #theboobfairy #lactationconsultant Photo cred: @sare_ox

12.01.2022 CAN I BREASTFEED IF I OR MY BABY / TODDLER IS SICK? Yes, most definitely, in fact continued breastfeeding is strongly encouraged when you or your baby are sick, as it is a comforting, nourishing and effective way to provide protective antibodies, adequate fluid intake and increased immunity to you baby. It will also help your to maintain the comfort of your breasts and your breastmilk supply. @lifebesideacre and her beautiful little boy ... #breastfeeding #breastfeedingtips #nursing #IBCLC #lactationconsultant #baby #toddler #liquidgold #motherhood #breastfeedinggoals #breastmilk #family #instamum #mumsoftheshire #healthybaby #theboobfairy

12.01.2022 HOW IS BREASTMILK PRODUCED BY MY BREASTS? When your baby latches to suckle at the breast, the receptors in your breast are activated and signal the pituitary gland in your brain to increase levels of Prolactin & Oxytocin. Prolactin stimulates milk synthesis and in the early weeks helps to maintain this production until it becomes a matter of supply and demand. The hormone Oxytocin enables the release or let down of your milk when breas...t feeding or expressing, forcing fat globules from the lobes of your breast into the ductal system and ready for removal by your baby. Oxytocin may also make you feel a bit thirsty, reminding you to take in fluids and give you a warm sense of well being, inducing relaxation. *Smoking and Alcohol are known to affect Prolactin levels and decrease breastmilk production. @sian_breastfeedingpractitioner #treeoflifebreastfeeding #breastmilk #liquidgold #breastfeedingjourney #nursing #fedisbest #motherhood #ibclc #lactationconsultant #mumsofinsta #mumsoftheshire #theboobfairy

12.01.2022 HOW DO I KNOW IF MY BABY IS GETTING ENOUGH BREASTMILK? If your baby is reasonably content, is growing well/developing normally, has soft moist skin and mouth, passes urine 6 8 time within a 24 hour period and has regular soft golden colour bowel motions, then you can be confident that you have an adequate supply of breastmilk. Should you decide that you need to build your milk supply, ensure that your baby is well latched when at the breast and increase the number of bre...astfeeds offered to 8 12 in 24 hours. Alternatively you can express your breastmilk after feeds, to ensure that your breast are fully drained. Effective drainage signals your body to fully replace the milk just emptied from your breasts. @zoeevisser #breastfeeding #breastmilk #liquidgold #supply #baby #motherhood #tipoftheday #lactationconsultant #IBCLC #photooftheday #mother #blackandwhite #motherandbaby #newborn #mumsoftheshire #sutherlandshire #shiremums

10.01.2022 Can anyone relate? Which square are you?

09.01.2022 Have you heard the saying Healthy Mother Healthy Baby? This is actually very true! If you are able to stay in good health, (reasonably) rested and emotionally supported, you will feel more confident and relaxed with mothering and as a result it will help your baby to feel calm, secure which enables them to feed, play and sleep better. The first few weeks and months of parenting can be both joyful and stressful! At times during this transition period you may feel iso...lated, lacking in self-confidence or miss the opportunity to share time with your partner or for the social life that you enjoyed before you became a parent. Days at home with a new baby can run into each other and sleepless nights leave you feeling foggy and still in your pyjamas at 4pm It is normal for new Mothers to experience a mixture of highs and lows, at first you may feel overwhelmed by intense and unexpected emotions, however as time goes on these feelings should take you from tears to joy, from feelings of inadequacy to confidence, or from frustration to calmness. Be sure to see your Doctor, Midwife or Early Childhood when needed. Keep in close touch with your family and friends. Use your mobile phone to help you stay connected. Make use of phone counselling services, Health-Direct and other parenting resources. Enlist all the practical help and emotional support you can from your partner, family and friends. Make a list of what you need help with, e.g. Housework, shopping, meals, washing, ironing etc. You may also need time out to catch up on your sleep or just go for a walk each day to soak up some Vitamin D and exercise! Plan to socialise with friends and other new Mums (join a Mums group or Mums excercise class!) or do something relaxing for yourself to boost your physical and emotional energy levels. Above all, do whatever it takes to keep stress levels low and enjoy time spent with your partner and your baby! @corefitmums - https://www.facebook.com/CoreFitnessCronulla/ #breastfeeding #breastfeedingtips #nursing #pumping #expressing #baby #family #selfcare #mentalhealth #selflove #askforhelp #motherhood #instamum #IBCLC #lactationconsultant #tipoftheweek #breastmilk #liquidgold #motherhoodunplugged #exercise #mumsoftheshire #sutherlandshire #corefitnesscronulla

06.01.2022 IS IT POSSIBLE TO BREASTFEED BOTH MY BABY AND MY TODDLER? Yes!! The only rule of thumb is to offer the breast to your baby first. If you have been breastfeeding a toddler, you may notice some fussiness in early pregnancy, thought to be due to a slight variation in taste from the changing hormones (this normally passes in a few days). Just prior to and at the time of the birth of your new baby, you will also notice a temporary transition back to a colostrum type fluid, whi...ch again will quickly return to mature milk, suitable for both your new baby and still very nutritious for your toddler. @mrs.amanda.powell #breastfeeding #breastfeedingtips #nursing #pumping #expressing #baby #family #selfcare #motherhood #instamum #IBCLC #lactationconsultant #tipoftheweek #breastmilk #liquidgold #nursing #tandemnursing #tandembreastfeeding #tandem
