25.01.2022 SmartVote is a really interesting project from the ANU that asks you questions and then lets you know how the ACT election candidates' views line up with yours. You may be - as I was - surprised by some of the results. #actpol Once you have 'voted' - if you click on the arrow on the right of each candidate, you can see where you and they line up - or not.... The frustrating thing is that Liberal and Labor (except for Dr Brendan Long - Labor for Murrumbidgee) have put forward the same answers for all their candidates. Having spent the last 4 years in the Assembly listening to my fellow MLAs I can tell you they are not all the same, even in the same party. It does make a difference who you elect, not just which party they are in. If you haven’t already you can see which candidates line up with your values act.smartvote.org/en/home
24.01.2022 Great to see the arts debate getting coverage in CityNews. Jo Clay, speaking for the Greens, was the only one of the speakers who could claim to be a practising artist and talked idealistically about the connection between the arts and protest and the need for a longer term view of the arts, with more residencies and artist-led programs: Arts give us connection., said Helen Musa. #BetterNormal
24.01.2022 Disappointing to see the old parties joining forces to keep the up flow of developer donations, and influence, to their political machines. No sooner do we ban donations from developers in the ACT than they start finding a way around it.
23.01.2022 Giving blood and plasma is one of the most generous things you can do for another person. And Australia needs 31,000 donations each week. If you’re feeling well and haven’t been overseas in the 28 days before your donation, you can give like life depends on it. Because for 1 in 3 of us, it does. Book in now at https://www.donateblood.com.au/one-step-closer
22.01.2022 A sustainable, connected Canberra requires a comprehensive public transport network. That’s why we will make sure every second peak hour service of Light Rail Stage 2 runs express, making it the fastest transport option for the southside. This would allow people to get between Woden and the City in about 16 minutes, cutting 10 minutes off the estimated 25-30 minutes of the current proposal. ... All part of Building A Better Normal! Read all about it at greens.org.au/act/light-rail-express #BetterNormal
21.01.2022 A tax cut for the rich while cutting badly needed JobKeeper supports doesn’t sound fair to me.
20.01.2022 Tomorrow is Sustainable House Day and even the predicted rain won't dampen the virtual tours tomorrow 20 September. If you are interested in building or renovating your house to be more sustainable, this is the day for you. Or if you want to see Australia's houses becoming more sustainable, this is the day for you.
19.01.2022 It is disappointing to read in the Canberra Times that the Liberals are planning to direct revenue from online gambling into the hands of Canberra’s racing industry. The Greens believe that a national Royal Commission into cruelty and abuse in the horse racing industry is needed. It certainly needs to happen before more money is handed over to the industry.... 18.01.2022 This bike path upgrade on Heysen Street, as well as upgrades in Woden Town Centre are key commitments as part of our $30 million active travel Parliamentary Agreement item with Labor. It’s great to see these paths finally going ahead as part of our commitment to active travel.
17.01.2022 I’m not standing for this election. But early voting has now started in preparation for election day on 17 October. One of the final reforms I was able to make in my time in the Assembly was to require Elections ACT to host information about each of the candidates. It’s important there is a central place where voters can find out more about the people who want to represent them. You can have a look at www.elections.act.gov.au//2020_legisl/candidate-statements
14.01.2022 Vinnies are calling on all parties to commit to building an additional 3000 social housing properties over the next 5 years bit.ly/HomeForAll2020 The Greens are committing $450 million over the next four years to deliver A Home For All in Canberra. We will deliver:... $200M public housing $200M community housing $41.2M specialist homelessness support services $10.3M housing for specific needs Read our full plan to Build a Better Normal with A Home For All at greens.org.au/act/a-home-for-all #BetterNormal
13.01.2022 From one retiring politician to another, I’d like to thank the wonderful Senator Rachel Siewert for her decades of service to The Australian Greens, our Parliament, and the people of Australia. Since entering the Senate representing Western Australia in 2004, Rachel has been a fierce advocate for social justice, being one of the first to raise the alarm over the flaws in the Robodebt system. Rachel, your advocacy on the issues of climate change, the environment, First Nations... peoples, refugees and income support has been tireless. I wish you all the best as we both move to the next stages of our lives.
12.01.2022 This week we released our final Parliamentary Agreement status update for the 9th Assembly. Over the last four years 105 items have been delivered or are on track to be delivered. The Greens in Government have delivered on what matters to our voters on issues such as:... -- 100% renewable electricity for the ACT -- Three new nurse led in walk in centres in Gungahlin, Weston and the Inner North -- 4000 trees planted this year - 20,000 to come -- Light Rail Stage 1 from Gungahlin to the City -- An ACT Independent Integrity Commission -- Banning developers from donating to political parties -- Investment in more public and affordable housing -- Establishment of the Office for Mental Health and Wellbeing -- Establishment of a Drug and Alcohol Court towards achieving a 25% reduction in recidivism by 2025 -- Banning greyhound racing in the ACT -- Trialling the use of deliberative democracy programs, such as citizen’s juries It’s a big list for sure. Read the Status Update in full bit.ly/AgreementUpdate But there’s still so much to do Building a Better Normal.
12.01.2022 Emma Davidson for Murrumbidgee is running to be the next Green in the seat of Murrumbidgee. Last night at the Weston Creek Community Council she took on Liberal, Labor and Independents. I was disappointed not to be able to attend because it was sold out but super pleased everyone was there. Emma has been a long-term resident in the electorate with a keen interest in our community.... Her energy and enthusiasm through this election campaign have been an inspiration and I trust the voters will look on her favourably when they cast their ballots. 10.01.2022 Trenerry Square looking gorgeous this morning. I’m at Cooleman court till noon if you want to have a chat.
08.01.2022 Disappointing to read that the old parties aren’t letting their candidates talk to journalists, even a candidate holding a ministry! The mistress of spin was pleasant enough but, you see, the candidate can't talk to you now because this is "peak time" for handing out leaflets. At the very moment she was saying this, Mr Vadakkedathu was chatting to Labor's Ms Orr, Steve Evans from the Canberra Times writes. We Greens are always ready to talk to people, even to the media.... Emma Davidson for Murrumbidgee and I will be at Woden Plaza 12-2pm this Thursday, 17 September, at lunch time, and this Saturday morning, 29 September at Cooleman Court if you would like to chat with us. #BetterNormal
08.01.2022 One constant over my time in politics has been people wanting to have a real say in what happens in their neighbourhood. This is why we want to trial a new way of doing local democracy.
08.01.2022 As I leave the Assembly, its good to see the future in the good hands of the School Strike 4 Climate Canberra - School Strike 4 Climate. Thank you.
07.01.2022 The people of Coombs deserve more amenity around their homes. 30 houses are in the plan for the Coombs Peninsula instead of leaving it as open space. The Greens are committed to preserving this important piece of Coombs.... What happens on it will impact directly on the Molonglo River Reserve. The Peninsula should be permanently withdrawn from the land release program and reserved to provide more protection to the threatened species in the River Reserve. Read what we have to say greens.org.au/act/news/coombs-peninsula-development
06.01.2022 At the 2016 election the ACT Greens made a commitment to establish an Independent Integrity Commission in the ACT. After the election, we made sure that establishing the Commission was a key item in our Parliamentary Agreement with Labor. Yesterday I attended the opening of the ACT Integrity’s Commission’s new offices as they get ready to start hearings.... When it comes to cleaning up our democracy and restoring trust in our political system, the Greens have set the agenda and the standard.
