25.01.2022 #IncomeAccount In his younger days, Grandpa's wages represented the Income Account. The money came in regularly, and was distributed regularly. So why have a separate account just for income? In business, we don't necessarily have a regular sum coming in. Having a separate Income account allows you to more easily see the patterns in your income generating.... I used to bill monthly at the end of the month. Having the separate Income account made me see how long I was waiting to get paid by some clients. I changed to billing my regular onsite clients (a whole day of work) after each visit, so I got paid on the next visit. Previously it could be 6 weeks before I got paid for that, now it was 1 or 2. I also started billing my irregular or one time clients when the work was competed. Apart from getting the money in sooner, I could remember more clearly what I had done and didn't miss billing for anything. I did expect these changes to make a one time increase in income for the month, and then it would settle back into the same pattern, just sooner. But that wasn't the case. Because I was focusing on income, I was actively looking for ways to generate more, and did more income generating activities. So the expected one-off boost to monthly income has now become a regular event. Nanny knew this trick as well. When she could, she boosted her income by taking in lodgers. What can you do to generate more income in your business?

23.01.2022 Day 2. Three coats of purple applied. The first coat just slid over the shiny surface and didn't adhere well, so two coats wasn't enough.
22.01.2022 Day 1 of the holiday craft project challenge. Lesley gave me a chalk paint kit for Christmas. So I managed to retrieve this TV stand from the garage. A few unhappy spiders looking for new homes. Brushed down, washed several times, nooks and crannies scrubbed, then a final rinse and we are ready to paint. Tomorrow's task is to get to Bunnings early to get a suitable brush. Then after the sun gets off the patio, I can start painting. I'm thinking the purple colour on the top and shelves, the blue on the legs and support braces, with the cream on the spindles on the sides. That's completely different to what I thought this morning, so who knows how it will turn out!

10.01.2022 It's nice to be recognised by the PM for all the hard work and long hours that have gone in over the past two months. It was wonderful to be able to help my client's businesses get additional funds to help them survive but it was also the most stressful time I have experienced in my business.

03.01.2022 #EnvelopeSystem This is my Nanny and Grandpa. Great Great Grandpa owned 4 shops. Great Grandpa lost the lot. As the eldest child, Grandpa had to leave school and get a job to help support the family. He became a bus driver. Eventually Nanny and Grandpa got married. Each week, Grandpa would get paid in cash. He would take out one third for his cigarettes and give the rest to Nanny to run the household.... Nanny would take what she got and put aside money for the rent, the electricity and anything else she knew she would need money to pay for. Then she would spend whatever was left on running the house, feeding herself and Grandpa and eventually four children. This method of putting money aside to pay for expenses is now known as "The Envelope System". This is one of the inspirations for the business cash management system Profit First. These days, we don't put money aside in envelopes, we use bank accounts. Over the coming weeks, I'll be explaining the bank accounts I use for Profit First in my business, and I will relate it back to how Nanny and Grandpa managed their money. From such humble beginnings, the small steps they took everyday resulted in all of their four children attending University, producing three teachers and one doctor (my Mum). You can achieve similar large changes in outcomes for your business, by taking seemingly small steps in the right direction on a regular basis.
03.01.2022 Caroline Smith - #ProfitStrategist Jackadder Business Consulting has been my primary way to support businesses to understand and keep better control of the financial aspects of their business. The way I work with many business owners is divided into three main stages. >> First we work together to analyse - this includes review and understanding of the current situation a business is in and where is believes it should be.... >> Secondly, we move into the strategy stage. As a natural strategist my role is to take the analysis and evidence and then to assist you to get clearer on your future vision, identify the potential in your business and then begin defining a personalised implementation plan. >> Thirdly, we move into the stage where you get to understand what can happen to move forward in your business. In this stage, translation, we spend time together where I share the plan with you, ascertain your understanding and identify the steps to take in an action plan. All of this includes education and support and can progress to ongoing consultancy for you and your business, including support to implement the Profit First system into your business. In addition, my small professional team are able to assist with business financial support including, but not limited to; Bookkeeping, financial system setup, training and consultancy.
