These earthly stories are sung to life through a deep love... of the country and into poignant memories of the landscape. I have taken countless photos at 35,000 feet and use these photographic visions of the land and its features - gorges, salt lakes, rivers etc - to inspire the shapes and textures of my work. 04.01.2022 Elemental. Land. Layers. Life. is an exhibition that comprises of 20 to 25 three-dimensional artworks. OPEN: Tuesday - Saturday 11am -5pm | April 27th - May 2...6th 2018 VENUE: Turner Galleries 470 William Street, Northbridge. For 34 years, I have flown across the continent from Sydney to Perth and marvelled when looking down from the cockpit and window to the land below. Ive taken countless photos at 35,000 feet. And, it is from these aerial photographs and the magnificent vistas and shapes below, that my landscape paintings and three-dimensional works evolved. When assembling each work, canvas is stretched over pre-shaped wood, then carved and etched with an angle-grinder. Landscapes abstract in approach and style - are painted into that terrain using acrylics. The completed work is framed in a wrapping of perspex which has been moulded to fit like a skin; this adds to the materiality and texture. This approach represents the truest depiction of decades of aerial views, poignant memories of landscape, and photography. This interpretation of the Australian landscape, I see from the sky. Marks, layers, platelets and textures these are abstract statements made by carving into the canvas with a power tool and engendering the essential elements of light, air and sun... Majesty, from above. A childhood spent travelling Australia - long distances overland - evolved into a deep love of the country, its hues and textures. An easy familiarity with power tools from girlhood - Father was a builder - means that dexterity is natural, a conventional practice in my art making. Enjoyment of sawdust and wood shavings and their textures adds to the emotional ownership. These are the rudiments of Elemental. Land. Layers. Life.
