07.01.2022 ‘I often enjoy working with a dystopian concept which influences movement, staging and sound. This element allows for an increase in the severity of emotions, allowing the dancers to embody them in a visual way.’ Choreographer Jesse Scales discusses her new work Inertia which will premiere as part of Sydney Dance Company's New Breed later this month.

06.01.2022 Today we celebrate the final day of Giselle Stanborough’s Cinopticon. Cinopticon has had a tumultuous existence. In 2019 artist Giselle Stanborough was awarded the Katthy Cavaliere Fellowship, generously made possible by Cavaliere’s estate, in partnership with MONA - Museum of Old and New Art and ACCA - Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Cavaliere’s practice was highly personal and temporal, integrating performance, video and installation. ‘What set her apart was her st...aunch independence,’ wrote curator Daniel Mudie Cunningham in 2016. ‘Somehow she was both ahead of her time and out of time.’ For the fellowship, an opportunity for artists working at the nexus of performance and installation, Stanborough considered Cavaliere’s performance of self. Cinopticon questions the power dynamics of spectatorship and the self through the lens of the online identity. Where does web-based narcissism meet surveillance? What does it mean to watch and be watched through the filter of an algorithm? The work took on new meaning when Carriageworks closed the week Cinopticon was scheduled to debut due to COVID-19. At home and socially distant, isolation made digital connection imperative and the questions posed by Cinopticon became more poignant as it quietly slept. As Carriageworks went into administration in June, it became possible that the work may never be seen by the public and would exist only online, through images and words. The work finally opened to the public on 7 August, more than four months later than planned. We are so glad to have shared this important and thought-provoking work with our community. Congratulations to Giselle Stanborough, whose creativity, curiosity and tenacity has been remarkable to witness against the wild ride of 2020. #suspendedmoment
