25.01.2022 UNSEASONALLY HOT AUTUMN? ... LET YOUR GARLIC TELL YOU WHEN TO PLANT Garlic is a living, respiring bulb, constantly monitoring climatic conditions and only start...s developing its internal shoot when the time and weather conditions are right. Planting too early can have serious health impacts on cloves sitting in dry or wet soils and can result in diseased plants and substandard bulbs. Whilst there are charts that provide a planting guide - you can easily assess when your garlic is ready for planting by cutting a clove in half along its length and looking at the development of the internal shoot. The ideal stage to plant your garlic is when the internal shoot is 3/4 of the way up the clove and starting to change from yellow to green. Planting at this 3/4 stage stimulates the clove to put down roots immediately and by the time the leaves emerge - the plant has a functioning roots system to feed, hydrate and drive leaf growth. Planting after the shoot has emerged means there is a period of time where the plant is vulnerable to pests and disease until it develops its root system. Planting too early means the clove is sitting in the soil for a long time waiting for the right germination conditions and is again vulnerable to soil based pests and disease that can penetrate the basal plate and scoot up inside the clove skin. The photograph shows a range of early, mid and late season garlic cloves as at today. You can see that only the first two cloves are almost ready to be planted (these are Subtropical and Turbans), whilst the rest of the mid-season and late-season garlics have not even developed their shoots. You can get your personal Planting, Harvest and Storage chart from my website ... and it's not too late to buy some bulbs at TasmanianGourmetGarlic.com.au. 22.01.2022 Despite our best intentions, there will sadly be no Carroway Garlic this year. A combination of factors have contributed to this unfortunately: a drastic lack of timely rain, machinery hiccups and Narelle going back to full time work, to name a few. We are hopeful for a good garlic crop again in 2019!
