21.01.2022 CANAL beach maintenance is underway including mowing, mechanical raking and steaming after being neglected for months following Roundup being phased out. Requests for action began in December last year. Melbourne Water are engaged by the council for weed management, with the two discussing alternatives to Roundup since summer. Kind regards, Cameron Howe, Founder

19.01.2022 GOOD NEWS: Melbourne Water (MW) will not proceed with corrosion works in December, which would have sent all traffic to see the lights (image: 2019) through one access way. The potential of a collision at night was a concern raised when Councillor Cameron Howe and Sonya Kilkenny MP contacted MW, who on Friday agreed to delay closure and maintenance of the eastern floodgate until January 11. *After anti-corrosion coating of the first floodgate was completed, a bulletin originally said works would be brought forward to start now.
18.01.2022 Today was a picture perfect day enjoyed by many, including Lucas pictured from Hampton Park. Carrum Surf Life Saving Club are awaiting final funding approval ...for their extension from the council, after the state government pledged and committed $1.5m to the project. Under plans a training/social area upstairs would be joined by increased storage and amenities downstairs. Architectural artwork is being prepared. See more
18.01.2022 PATTERSON RIVER UPDATE: Parks will "check for and trim any hazardous vegetation protruding along the trail" over the next few weeks, while the council add that overhanging branches on the northern bank will be pruned. Repairs to taped off sections of the ramp and paths are expected soon. Dates for a new gangway to the depicted coast guard jetty will follow. Practicable measures are also being discussed by Parks to assist with mutual respect between user groups on the trail. Photo by Joe of our backyard Kind regards, Cameron Howe, Founder
14.01.2022 YES, this is real and it's Patterson River. The good news is Melbourne Water will commence litter retrieval from Monday, after Parks Victoria and myself both nominated Patterson River upstream for the Waterways Blitz program in July. MW have been able to reschedule these works, which will see a team collect litter from the embankment. Parks Victoria will also retrieve litter from the water in a boat once works are programmed. This is a win for mitigating plastics entering our local waterways with more to follow. Kind regards, Cameron Howe

11.01.2022 The VEC confirms it has not provided your mobile number to candidates. Personal data can be obtained by political organisations to support their preferred candidates. Electoral Commissioner, Warwick Gately, says some voters in the current local council elections have become concerned upon receiving text messages from local council candidates in their campaigning. I can definitively state that the VEC does not provide voter mobile phone number or email address details to candidates or political parties. If anyone is concerned, they should take it up directly with the candidate or the person who authorised the message, says Mr Gately. https://www.vec.vic.gov.au//mobile-phone-numbers-not-from-

09.01.2022 CRIME UPDATE for issues raised from theft from motor vehicle and graffiti to motorcycles operating along the river. 1. Some police resources are being dedicated to responding to the pandemic, but otherwise the "main focus is to drive down drug related crime", including theft from motor vehicle that is a statewide issue. e.g. proceeds of theft are linked directly to drug use in the view of police. While police say crime is broadly down, this continues to be a problem so please... lock your vehicle. 2. While vandalism may be investigated by police, deterrents such as sensor lights are advised. The City of Kingston have released a new graffiti management plan, stating that reported graffiti that they are responsible for with profanity or offensive language will be removed within 24 hours. Otherwise the policy is to remove graffiti within 5 days, however unlike under stage 3 in stage 4 they are only removing offensive tags. Tags on the railway station sit with the project team for removal presently, with each authority from VicRoads to Melbourne Water having their own approach. e.g. reported graffiti on the Thompson Rd overpass will be removed within a week, with VicRoads continuing to remove tags in stage 4. On a side note, Neighbourhood Watch Kingston South will be discussing this issue further. 3. Motorcycles operated along the river may soon face pedestrian chicanes under consideration to prevent motorcycle access. Meanwhile, police who currently can only lay charges for use on a road, have requested to become authorised officers on Parks Victoria land to fine motorcycle users. *Update produced in consultation with the council and Chelsea Police's senior sergeant. Non-immediate issues can be reported to Crime Stoppers or [email protected]. Updated 20/08/20 at request of police.
09.01.2022 LEISURE: for an extended bike ride, head 3.5km east of the Wells Rd bridge at Patterson Lakes along the southern bank to the Eumemmerring Creek bridge. The Dandenong Creek Trail, between Carrum and Kilsyth is 44km in length for keen cyclists.
09.01.2022 BEACH MAINTENANCE returning to a schedule after Roundup was phased out, has been met with a delay after mechanical raking in late October. Kingston City Council have issued the following statement: A 3ton Pozi Track Loader using a harley rake attachment will be used to substitute the beach plaining with the small tractor to assist with further weed control. A follow-up application will be undertaken as of the 29th - 31st December 2020 and will resume on the 4th January 2021 ...until all accessible areas are completed. Beach areas where the above method can not be used due to restricted access for the barge to unload equipment safely and jetty landings along the sand that hinder access to other parts of the beach will not be completed. Council is investigating another alternative to the treatment of these areas we will keep you updated of these changes via this web page. 07.01.2022 AFTER 25 years it's the end of an era for the Hogan family, with the boat ramp management tender awarded to a roadside traffic management firm. Their peppercorn lease of the tackle shop concludes in February that they say is not viable without ramp management. The Hogan's and staff intend to assist with future Mates Day on the Bay events, which give people with a disability the opportunity to fish courtesy of loaned boats and tackle.
07.01.2022 SMOKE free zones are being introduced for beaches, parks and major shopping precincts across Kingston. Signage will indicate where smoking is banned from December, where the maximum an individual can be fined is $500 (5 penalty units). A proactive, educational approach to enforcement will be taken initially.
