16.01.2022 It was a little beet. This post is going to be too rad for you. Radish is one of my go-to’s for gut health.... This bulbous little beauty is free of FODMAPS making it a very well tolerated vegetable for those with difficulty digesting food. Radish is rich in ferulic acid. This funky sounding acid is active against: - Sytaphylococcus aureus - Pseudomonas pyocyaneus - Bacillus subtilis - Corynebacterium - Diphtheria - Aspergillus niger - Candida albicans These acids displayed antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria: - Bacillus subtilis - Staphylococcus aureus and against gram-negative: - Escherichia coli - Kliebsiella pneumoniae (Gutierrez & Perez, 2004) Caffeic acid, another potent acid, showed antifungal properties in vitro against Helminthosporium maydis. Radish also falls into the category of being a cholagogic based food (Lee et al., 2012). This classification of food represents the ability to increase the production and release of bile. Bile is essential for the digestion of fats. conjugation of toxins along with eliciting anti-microbial effects on the microbiota. Radish has also been found to stimulate intestinal motility (the increased bile flow could well be a complementing factor for this outcome). This little red nugget also yields a range of detoxification capabilities through supporting glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and GSH-Px. This is most likely a huge contributing factor in its abilities to help cleanse the blood of toxins, and in supporting the kidneys. Radish also exhibits hypotensive properties, which enables blood pressure to be regulated in a more healthy manner. Along with being a natural diuretic, which means that is able to increase urine production (another possible mechanism in its kidney supporting factors along with lowering blood pressure). See more

08.01.2022 Apples are one of the best natural sources of malic acid, with 90% of its total acid content coming from malic acid. This beautiful nutrient plays a key role in the citric acid cycle supporting the mitochondria and energy production. This nutrient has been found effective for individuals suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.... Apples polyphenols can also support the healing processes for leaky gut, there is an upregulation in tight junction proteins occludens and zona occludens (ZO-1). They have also been shown to reduce stomach ulcers caused by aspirin (Paturi et al., 2014). Apples are a rich source of Quercetin. This is a key nutrient in histamine management making it phenomenal for seasonal allergies, MCAS or individuals suffering from mold exposure. Quercetin has also been shown to increase brain and muscle mitochondria through mitochondrial biogenesis (Davis et al., 2009). Pectin is a soluble fiber found in 15-20% of apple pulp. This has been shown to reduce cholesterol, along with the ability to bind onto some heavy metals, such as lead (Khotimchenko et al, 2007). Aluminium is a heavy metal that we are exposed to on a grand scale. It has long been implicated with an array of neurological diseases. Apple polyphenols have been found to have neuroprotective effects along with possibly supporting the chelation of aluminium (Cheng et al., 2014). Gala apples contain some of the highest amounts of calcium D-glucarate (Xie et al., 2009). This nutrient blocks an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase. Beta-glucuronidase reduces the liver’s detox ability, allowing toxins (and oestrogen) to re-enter the blood. Diets rich in fat and protein increase the amount of beta-glucuronidase in the body. Now for the caveats ... The EWG detected pesticide residues in 90% of apple samples. 80% of the apples tested contained traces of diphenylamine, a pesticide banned in Europe. This underlines the importance of purchasing organic apples. Apples are also high in fructose and sorbitol. This can be problematic for individuals sensitive to certain FODMAPS with any serving size over 25g providing a moderate amount of sorbitol. See more

06.01.2022 Pomegranate is a challenge. All jokes aside, the antioxidant activity of pomegranate juice equals three times that of red wine and green tea due to the high concentration of polyphenols. Pomegranate is loaded with phytobiotics making it a fantastic selectively-acting anti-microbial agent. ... All whilst having no negative impact on lactobacillus species and surprisingly having a positive benefit on bifidobacteria. The fruit and bark of pomegranate are used against intestinal parasites, dysentery, and diarrhoea. In addition to all the impressive benefits on gut health, pomegranates are a great pre-workout option as they have been found to support vasodilation, aiding with blood flow and improving training performance. Pomegranate has also been found to decrease the activity of cholinesterase, this enzyme breaks down acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter essential for clarity, focus through to playing an integral role in muscle contractions. Punicic acid found within pomegranate is able to enhance fatty acid oxidation by upregulating CPT-1 (carnitine palmitoyltransferease activity enzyme) leading to a greater fat-burning potential. Pomegranate is a majestic beauty when it comes to supporting the balance of oestrogen. It has been found to inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme which converts oestrogen through to the 16OHE1 metabolite. This particular metabolite is strongly associated with increased proliferation and inflammation. Note, inhibiting CYP3A4 may disrupt the metabolism of certain medication, prolonging its affect within the body. Pomegranate is also a naughty little source of ellagic acid. This nutrient stimulates glutathione production (through GSTM1 and GSP1), supporting the glucoronidation elimination pathway along with up-regulating the healthy conversion of oestrogen through to the 2OHE1 metabolites (these metabolites are associated with anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory effects). Don’t worry lads, I haven’t missed you out. Pomegranate has also been found have benefits on the prostate, ranging from inhibition of tumour growth through to decreasing serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. See more
