11.01.2022 For those not involved in agriculture who are asking Yes, I love farming and think it is a wonderful occupation No, I don’t think farmers should be held on... a pedestal as being more important than anyone else. Yes, farmers do love their animals. Otherwise they wouldn’t be in the industry. No, I have never met a farmer who puts economics over animal welfare. Yes, the price of wheat usually always goes up the day after I sell No, the fact my tractor has GPS Autosteer does not mean I sit there doing nothing all day Yes, there are many farmers who believe in climate change No, almond milk is not in fact milk Yes, GMO’s are safe No, gluten is not related to GMO’s. Gluten is a family of proteins which are found in cereal grains. No, sorry there are currently no GMO cereals. Your gluten intolerance has nothing to do with the production of GMO crops Yes, we are sick of the joke about farmers being outstanding in their fields No, the diesel excise rebate is just that - a rebate. It is not a subsidy. Yes, we do know all of our chemicals by their active ingredients rather than just their brand names No, we can’t drive past a bakery when picking up parts in town without stopping in Yes, I am sick of droughts No, we don’t saturate our crops with glyphosate Yes, glyphosate is safe No, I do not believe I am putting my family and the wider population at risk by using glyphosate Yes, of course I wear all the proper PPE when using glyphosate No, that doesn’t mean it is any more dangerous than any other chemical. It means we are following manufacturers instructions, just as we all should for any substance, industrial or household. Yes, my assets may be worth more than those who are wage earners outside of Ag No, that does not make me rich or always have plenty of disposable income. There are years when I have a negative income and have to increase my borrowings just to pay my household bills. But that is a choice I make. Yes, we are addicted to weather apps and forecasts, even though we know they are as reliable as horoscopes. The weather is our life. No, I am not sure why you can buy a car in any colour but can only buy a John Deere in green Yes, sheep are stupid No, I am not always up at the crack of dawn. Some farmers are night people Yes, it frustrates me when people think the drought is over after one good rain event No, I have never in my life stood in a field with a pitchfork Yes, I can spell Rhizoctonia, Pratylenchus and Monocotyledons Okay yes, I did have to look them up No, steel wool does not come from hydraulic rams Yes, the smell of fresh rain on dry soil always uplifts me No, there is little correlation between the stories of bread and beer becoming more expensive and higher grain prices due to droughts. It is a minuscule part of the final price. Yes, farmers do care for the environment. If they didn’t, they would not survive No, sorghum is not a type of mouth ulcer Yes farmers are educated. Some may not have a degree or been to university but have committed themselves to a lifelong of learning and can more than hold their own in any discussion on science, economics, politics and history No, I don’t believe I need to justify everything I do on my farm any more than any person in any profession needs justify to the wider public every intricate action within their business. Yes, we know we don’t live on an island and the acceptance of the wider community to our practices is important to us No, farmers don’t always sit on the same side of the political fence Yes, we do sometimes get sick of all the questions but that’s okay!
