25.01.2022 It's the last day of term! If you've been struggling to find time for the kid's foot health checks, now's the perfect time. We help kids with problems like: Growing pains (heel pain, knee pain & foot pain)... In-toeing and out-toeing Toe walking Abnormalities in the way they walk or run Pain in their legs, knees & feet Ingrown toenails Warts, corns and calluses See more

25.01.2022 Great review from Jeremiah... "After months of foot and knee aches I went and saw the team at Cartwright Podiatry. After being fitted up in a custom set of orthotics in some very supportive shoes I can get through my day with far less fatigue and without pain, Thanks guys, nice job!!"

25.01.2022 Does your heel pain start FIRST thing in the morning, as soon as your foot hits the ground? Then, after some moments of walking, it starts to ease up - only to have the same thing return later in the day when you sit or lie down to have a rest and then need to get back up again? If this sounds like you, then you may have damaged a tissue on the bottom of the foot that runs from your heel, across your arch, and to your toes. ... It's called your plantar fascia, and it plays an important role in supporting your arch and assisting your feet when walking. As it's placed under strain EVERY time you walk - if you're getting pain - it's essential to treat it early - before the pain results in a tear (yep, it's as painful as it sounds!)

24.01.2022 We now have our very own in-house orthotic mill! We invested in this mill because we wanted to have FULL control over the orthotics that we prescribe, design and create for you. Most clinics use an orthotic lab that does it for them - which is convenient, but unfortunately, can limit a podiatrist in terms of the features they'd like to include for their patients.... We are now proud to be RESTRICTION-FREE and able to create the orthotics we know will help you best. #sydneyorthotics #wollondilly #tahmoor

24.01.2022 Shockwave treatment has "arguably the best evidence to date" when it comes to treating plantar fasciitis heel pain, according to Podiatry Today from a series of clinical studies. For you, this means it can help you recover from heel pain faster and more effectively - after which we'll tell you the right steps to take to keep your pain gone and help prevent this problem from coming back. We're proud to have shockwave available for our patients to help them get the best results. If you're not sure about what it is or how it works, click here: https://cartwrightpodiatry.com.au/services/shockwave/

24.01.2022 Has the new year motivated you to get fit or train for a new goal like a marathon? If that's you and you need a new pair of runners - here are our top 'style' picks! For a flat foot, we recommend a motion control shoe that gives you some in-built support to help you feel your best on your feet.... For a neutral foot and high-arched foot, we recommend a neutral style of shoe - you've got to be extra careful not to get a shoe with in-built pronatory control as it may tip you outwards to a suboptimal position. While we don't make generalisations about types of shoe, we do have a particular inkling for supportive HOKA, Brooks & Saucony footwear if we can get the right fit for your feet. Not sure about you foot type? It can make a big difference to which shoe is best for you! We'll fill you in on your foot type, what it means, and how it relates to your symptoms at your next appointment with us. #shoerecommendation #podiatristrecommended

23.01.2022 We think this sums up the year for many of us - it's been a tough adventure, with plenty of unexpected bumps, and we may still be in the thick of it, but we're staying strong through it all - and hopefully enjoying some of the moments along the way. Happy New Year everyone!!

23.01.2022 Wishing all our legends who are dads a very happy Father's Day today!

23.01.2022 It's world mental health day - so what's the link between exercise and mental health? Exercise helps reduce mental fatigue Helps to lower your stress levels Helps boost your mood, giving you a 'runner's high'... Helps fight depression & anxiety Helps boost your self-esteem and alleviate social withdrawal So we encourage you to get out and get your 30+ minutes in for the day!

22.01.2022 Evidence-based medicine that gets results - it's what we're founded on here at Cartwright Podiatry.

21.01.2022 Plantar fasciitis heel pain is the most common cause of ongoing heel pain here in Australia - and it's also one of the most common foot problems we see and treat. So, which treatment is PROVEN to be effective for this heel pain - and what's the difference between plantar fasciitis and heel spurs? Our experienced podiatry team have shared all this here: https://cartwrightpodiatry.com.au/plantar-fasciitis-heel-p/... #plantarfasciitis #heelpain

20.01.2022 Great review from Ethan... "Dane knows everything about feet!"

20.01.2022 When you love what you do... no obstacle stands in your way!

18.01.2022 Why has your heel pain started? If your heel pain feels almost out of the blue given that you haven't had any falls, accidents or moments of severe pain, here are the most common causes for heel pain: Doing more exercise than usual (like going for a long hike) and overusing the plantar fascia tissue on the day... Flat feet & collapsed arches (pronation) Tight calf muscles that pull on the heel High arches that don't absorb shock well Walking barefoot on hard surfaces for prolonged periods Incorrect or worn-out shoes Over-training or suddenly increasing your training intensity If you've got heel pain and want it gone - get in touch. We'll help with both relieving your symptoms AND working to prevent it from coming back in the future. Follow the link in the comments below for more info on plantar fasciitis heel pain!

17.01.2022 Fungal nail infections can spread quickly through households and families - though the person that may be putting you MOST at risk, if they have a fungal nail infection, is your spouse! We're on a mission to help stop the spread of fungal nail infections within families - and to do it safely and effectively, not just paint a lacquer on the toenails and *hope* for the best. Find out how to stop the spread through your home here: https://cartwrightpodiatry.com.au/how-to-stop-your-fungal-/

17.01.2022 What's causing the pain at the back of your heel? Our podiatry team has shared about the causes + symptoms of the TOP SIX causes of heel pain at the very back (not bottom) of your heel. Read it here: https://cartwrightpodiatry.com.au/why-does-the-back-of-my-/

17.01.2022 When your patient has hypermobility...

17.01.2022 Think that your feet going up a size during pregnancy is a myth? Sorry ladies, it's not. When you're pregnant, a hormone called 'relaxin' circulates through your system and helps to soften our ligaments. This is crucial for helping the body grow, expand and accommodate the growing baby and prepare for birth. As a by-product, the ligaments in the feet also relax - and so our feet may become wider, flatter, and less supported through the arch.... This means that you may go up either half or a whole shoe size! As well as get wider. Unfortunately, the decreased support through the arch can cause foot pain and even plantar fasciitis - so be careful and keep your feet supported! And if pain develops - let us know

16.01.2022 When you don't make it in to the podiatrist before Christmas and have to resort to other measures... Only a few weeks left so don't forget to book in for your summer foot care!

16.01.2022 It's Good Friday and school is out! It's now the perfect time to get them to all their appointments - including their foot health check. Kids should have their feet checked every year - just like getting our teeth checked.... While we definitely recommend bringing them in if they're experiencing any pains or showing any problems, their foot health checks can help uncover or discuss things like: Alignment issues with the feet and legs Signs that their footwear isn't suitable for their feet and may be causing problems like claw toes or juvenile bunions Reasons why they may not be able to keep up with kids in their class during running or sports Any problems with developmental milestones How to help your kids get the most out of their chosen sports Do you have any questions about how we can help kids with their feet and legs? Let us know!

15.01.2022 Do you get pain in the joints at the ball of your foot? Our feet have to support our WHOLE body weight - so when something shifts our body weight forwards onto the balls of our foot, it's not surprising that we develop pain and discomfort. The causes for the shift can include:... Wearing high heels Other unsupportive footwear A tight Achilles tendon, which doesn't allow the heel to properly come into contact with the ground Foot biomechanics that see us spending more time on our forefoot than heel during gait Habits - like forefoot running Having a high arched foot Uphill training ... To name a few! If you're getting pain at the ball of your foot, our experienced podiatry team can help. #footpain #forefootpain #tahmoor #wollondilly

15.01.2022 What does a fungal nail infection look like? Nails can become brittle, flaky, thick, discoloured (white/yellow) and have a moth-eaten appearance. In the early stages, you may notice white streaks or spots in the nail. As the infection continues, the nail may lift up from the nail bed and develop an odour.... Have a look at the images - and if it looks familiar, get in touch.

15.01.2022 It's foot health week - and as a profession here in Australia, we're proud to offer knowledgeable lower limb care for the whole family. Every appointment is focused around achieving your goals by assessing, diagnosing and treating your foot or leg problem. And yes - this makes for very happy patients!... #foothealthweek2020 #foothealthaus

15.01.2022 Reducing your risk of running injuries What are some easy things you can start doing today? Establish solid foundations with good shoes. After all, your shoes become the new ground you run on Your socks can be the difference between running that full 10km or stopping at 2 km with painful blisters. Wear socks that draw moisture away from your feet... Don't ignore small aches or pains - they could be your body's way of telling you that something is going wrong - and it can get worse quickly if you ignore it Don't rush into running long distances - let your body build up to it gradually. Going to hard too fast puts a LOT of pressure on your joints - and is one of the most common reasons for injuries in runners that we see and treat Add strength training and stretching to your routine. The stronger you are, and the fewer restrictions you have from tight muscles, the longer you'll be able to keep going comfortably Need help with pain in your lower limbs from running? Book in with our experienced podiatry team. #tahmoor #wollondilly #runningtips #marathontips

14.01.2022 Great review from Susan... "I had trouble with my toenails for many years. After seeing Dane, my toenails have never felt or looked better. I would recommend Dane as the Podiatrist to go to."

14.01.2022 The weight of your running shoes MATTER. A recent study in the Journal of Foot & Ankle Research showed that wearing lighter shoes meant that your gastrocs (the muscles at the back of your calves) worked harder to slow you down! Which may promote fatigue when braking during running. This means that if you're a runner and if you've been running in the same shoes (with the same weight) for years - and you suddenly switch to shoes that are lighter or heavier, there may be a not...iceable difference in how you feel after you run! If you need help with getting the best shoes for your feet, come see us first.

13.01.2022 Did you know that your podiatrist, Dane attended Glasgow University last year before COVID? Yep! Alongside being a fantastic podiatrist, he's also completing his Masters Theory of Podiatric Surgery Here are some snaps he took of Glasgow University & Glasgow Caledonian University.... #throwback #glasgowuni #glasgow

13.01.2022 Laser is the #1 solution for fungal nail infections. And we've got it available here. So how does it compare with other common treatments? Topical treatments between 5.5% and 8.5%... Oral medications between 14% and 55% Laser treatment between 60% and 97% These are the best results for fungal nail infections that we have seen in the last decade. If you need help with your fungal nail infection, book your appointment today.

13.01.2022 Why do warts pop up on the bottom of the feet? Warts are caused by a virus (HPV) that is picked up from direct contact or by sharing surfaces like public swimming pool floors and changing rooms. Kids develop warts much more frequently than adults, but once you have the virus in your system, it's there for life and can cause a wart to pop up spontaneously at anytime.... As warts are a living tissue, they're much more difficult to treat than corns, which are also 'lumps' on the bottom of the foot that can be easily removed by a Podiatrist. That's why it's SO important to have the right diagnosis - so you don't waste time, money and pain treating the wrong thing. We have a number of treatment options for warts depending on how big they are, how many there are, how deep they are, and where on your foot they are located. These include: Topical treatment with a mild acid (salicylic acid, silver nitrate) Cryotherapy, which involves freezing the warts Minor surgery to scoop out the wart Warts that are on a high-pressure area of the foot can quickly cause you more and more pain as they grow and you continue to walk on them. Generally speaking, the smaller they are, the faster they will disappear, though this can still take some time. If you need help with warts - book your appointment today.

12.01.2022 It's Women's Health Week So did you know that when performing the same activities as men, there are certain injuries that women are MORE susceptible to sustaining? Yep - and there are three key reasons why:... 1. Body composition. Women are predisposed to having a lower bone mineral density, generally less muscle mass and a naturally higher body fat percentage. 2. Anatomical differences. Women tend to have a wider-set pelvis, which affects the angle of the hip bones. They also tend to have smaller bone dimensions, all of which influences their injury risk. 3. Hormone differences. The increased presence of hormones like estrogen affects the performance of muscles, tissues and bones. Hormones are also affected by life stages, including menopause and pregnancy. In pregnancy, hormones like relaxin are freely flowing and lead to looser ligaments which may increase injury risk. Our podiatry team understand these differences and how they may be affecting you. If you're in pain - get in touch.

12.01.2022 The controversial shoe that has helped runners break world records since 2016 Nike's Vaporfly is PROVEN in studies to help runners move at least 4% more efficiently. Since then, other shoe brands including NB and Asics have created their own versions with similar features, like a carbon fibre plate, a wedge of soft, energy-returning foam, and a rocker-bottom style sole.... Have you tried any of these styles? Tell us your experience!

11.01.2022 Bunions don't just appear overnight. They start as a small are barely notice change in the big toe joint, and gradually worsen to look like this. For many, the first sign is simply a little redness, maybe even some callus on the side of the big toe joint at the ball of the foot.... When you notice this, it's the PERFECT time to treat the young bunion and prevent it from gradually worsening over the next ten or twenty years to end up looking like this. Not only can it be painful, but it can also make it extremely difficult to find footwear that fits and that you're happy with. Need help with your bunion? Get in touch.

09.01.2022 Great review from heather!

08.01.2022 Shockwave treatment is the best treatment for plantar fasciitis heel pain. But don't take our word for it. According to a paper published in the Podiatry Today journal, "shockwave therapy has arguably the best evidence to date" when it comes to treating plantar fasciitis heel pain as per its results in clinical studies. Specifically, this is for the best medium and long-term outcomes (as opposed to managing 'acute' symptoms, meaning when the pain first starts).... Better yet - we have shockwave AVAILABLE and have been using it for years to help our patients get the best outcomes for their heel pain.

07.01.2022 From our family here at Cartwright Podiatry to yours at home, wishing you a very Merry Christmas for tomorrow!

07.01.2022 It's world diabetes day and if you have diabetes, you should be having a diabetic foot health check *every* year. Diabetes negatively affects both your circulation and sensation. And these effects worsen over time. This means that over the years, your ability to feel, and the circulation to your feet, will become worse. As it does, you become more susceptible to sustaining a wound - like a cut, scratch or even standing on a nail - and not being able to feel it. If that hap...pens, your ability to heal the wound worsens, meaning it takes longer to heal, AND your ability to fight any infections that develop worsen, too. Having an annual diabetic foot health check means you know exactly what's happening with your feet every year. If you know the status of your foot health, you know the right precautions to take to manage your risks. If you have diabetes and haven't had your foot health check yet this year - book in to see our team. We'll fill you in on everything you need to know.

07.01.2022 The Royal Mile in Edinburgh taken by your Podiatrist Dane during his ongoing studies in Glasgow for Podiatric Surgery. The Royal Mile gets its name from its tradition as a processional route for kings and queens for the last 500 years. It has Edinburgh Castle at its head and the Palace of Holyroodhouse at its foot (ha!).... Have you been? #royalmile #edinburgh #podiatrist

07.01.2022 Are flat feet in children a problem? This is a cause of concern for many parents - should it be? We've answered this in our new blog here: https://cartwrightpodiatry.com.au/should-i-be-worried-abou/

06.01.2022 Why isn't your ingrown toenail getting better when you've been prescribed antibiotics? Simply put: antibiotics do NOT treat an ingrown toenail. They can help manage an infection if you've developed one - and by helping reduce some of the swelling related to the infection they can help ease your pain and discomfort - but they don't FIX the problem. Having an ingrown toenail means that the nail has PIERCED the skin - that's why your pain starts in the first place.... Taking antibiotics will not change the fact that the nail has embedded itself in the skin. This means that you'll keep getting pain and while the ingrown wound is open - and very seriously, you can continue to develop ongoing infections long after your course of antibiotics has finished! If you have an ingrown toenail, you can't rely on antibiotics for the original problem - though we do recommend them if your ingrown nail is infected. You can help prevent ongoing pain by booking in to have your nail treated by your Podiatrist. We'll remove the piece of nail that has ingrown, so the toe is able to heal.

05.01.2022 Need a new pair orthotics? Will a second pair help you so you don't have to keep moving yours from shoe to shoe? Many of our patients are eligible for a rebate on a new pair EVERY year - depending on your level of cover with your health fund. This could give you the freedom of having a pair for a specific pair of shoes - whether that's your work shoes, soccer boots, dress shoes, boots or something else!... We can make your next pair identical to your first, or they can have differences that can help you get the best fit and comfort. Book your appointment with us for your orthotics by calling us on 02 8405 6850.

04.01.2022 7 in 10 recreational runners face an injury EVERY year, according to Sports Medicine Australia. Given the number of runners that we see and treat in our clinic, we have to agree! Most often, they'll be struggling with: Runner's knee pain... Shin splints Heel pain (often plantar fasciitis or heel spurs) Achilles pain Sesamoiditis Iliotibial band syndrome (pain on the outside of the thigh) ... just to name a few! One of the biggest challenges with treating runners is that because they keep running, their injury quickly worsens, leading to an increased recovery time (and more intense rehab) than if they had just come in to see when they first felt that pain, ache or niggle! That's our number one tip - when you feel pain, get it sorted ASAP! Pain never happens for *no* reason.

04.01.2022 When you can't get to your podiatrist....

04.01.2022 We help people with flat feet: Optimise their foot posture and alignment Reduce their risk of injury & discomfort Relieve and pain or aches they're currently experiencing... You may not be able to permanently change your foot posture, but that doesn't mean you have to live with regular aches or pain.

03.01.2022 Welcome to foot health week! To start the week off, we thought we'd share the EIGHT most common causes of forefoot pain that we see and treat here at Cartwright Podiatry. Capsulitis/synovitis... Sesamoiditis Plantar plate rupture Morton's neuroma Short metatarsal bones Bursitis Stress fracture Rigid big toe joint from hallux limitus/arthritis If you take anything away from this, it's that pain in the ball of your foot can have such a WIDE range of causes. The treatment depends entirely on the cause, which is why treating forefoot pain should never be a one-size-fits-all solution. If you're wanting professional care for your foot pain from an experienced team, we'd love to help.

02.01.2022 It's walk to work day! According to studies, switching the car or bus for your walking shoes will help you: Boost your energy levels... Helps prevent again type 2 diabetes and obesity Improve your self-esteem and mood Reduce stress and anxiety while helping to naturally manage depression Lower blood pressure, improve circulation and reduce your risk of heart disease (by up to 35% if you walk 30mins every day) Improve cognitive function, memory, concentration & problem solving by increasing the supply of blood to the brain Sleep better Reduce joint stiffness & pain If any pain or discomfort is currently limiting your ability to walk and stay active - let us know. We're here to help.

02.01.2022 Happy International Podiatry Day! While we're proud to offer a wide range of your usual podiatric treatments, our clinic specialises in sports medicine. This DOESN'T mean that you must play sports - it more refers to your musculoskeletal system and the intricate biomechanics of your feet and legs. It just so happens that the musculoskeletal system and your foot biomechanics often contribute greatly to sports injuries!... This means that we focus on treating: Heel pain Foot, ankle & toe pain Pain in runners and other sportspeople Knee pain Shin & calf pain Strains & overuse injuries Symptoms that start during or after a period of being active on your feet Unsure if we can help you? Send us a message using the button below - we'd be happy to answer any questions and see if we're a good fit for you.

01.01.2022 Knee pain are you sure you know what's really causing yours? Knee pain has such a wide variety of causes - from the kneecap to the knee cartilage to the ligaments, bones, alignment and much more. In order to take the right care and get the right treatment, you need to know what the real cause is - and that's where we come in,... Our podiatrists perform extensive tests to determine the cause of your pain, using x-ray or ultrasound as needed to reach your diagnosis. We then get you on a very specific treatment plan - no one-size-fits-all care here. If you have knee pain, we'd love to help. Call us or visit our website to make your appointment.

01.01.2022 Previously, we mentioned that shockwave treatment has some of the best clinical evidence for effectively treating plantar fasciitis heel pain. So what other conditions can it help? Heel spurs ... Achilles pain Shin splints Knee pain Calf pain Bursitis Arch pain Hip pain Bone repairs Calcification It's no secret that we are massive fans of shockwave treatment as often our patients start feeling noticeable results after the first appointment! From there, we expect your pain to reduce week after week.
