09.01.2022 When I was working in the Bushfire housing team post 2009 Black Saturday bush fires I was continually surprised by the number of homes which had been destroyed ...and had gum trees and and pinus growing immediately adjacent to the homes. I am continued to be surprised how many Australia homes in bush or semi bush environments still have gum or pine trees immediately adjacent to their homes. Prepping for fires is an integral part of permacutlure design. Other than the main stream defenses such as sprinklers, ember proofing, shutters, fire bunkers etc there are many permaculture design applications we can use. These include position of buildings, dams and vegetation around your home and buildings, something Bill Mollison spoke about in my PDC from first hand experience fighting fires in Vic and Tas. I have done a lot of work on my property around fire suppressing plantings. Small Tree Farm in WA has an excellent page on tree selection to help suppress fires. http://www.smalltreefarm.com.au/Fire-retardants.html With one friend already loosing his home this year and over 50 homes being destroyed in Vic in the last few days in fires that haven't even come close to the 2009 conditions and global warming increasing the severity and frequency of bushfires, permaculture designers should make sure their designs maximise fire survival-ability. Also if you are considering staying and fighting please read the excellent witness statement by Peter Olorenshaw at the 2009 Black Saturday Royal Commission. Its a long read but engaging and will give you insight in the behaviour of extreme fires from a first hand perspective. http://vol4.royalcommission.vic.gov.au/index69c5.html
