25.01.2022 Morning cuppa after the storm I’m loving this wild and stormy week we are having in Brisbane. You can almost see the garden growing after the rain. 23.01.2022 I love carving into clay. There is something so satisfying when the clay is at the ‘just right’ firmness. This week will see me doing this many many times as I make pieces for my shop restock, and order for @sippinstant and start pieces for my @soulquartz collection. Today there will be a little treasure hunting with Bree this morning, followed by a clay workshop this afternoon. Then a little Sunday reflection and planning to help my week run smoothly. 23.01.2022 Everyday is special Now I’m out of the house and in the new studio I’ve made the conscious decision to just wear the nice dresses. I have a wardrobe full of lovely summer dresses, like this one from @coralcovecollection ,that I hardly ever wear as I’m always in my old clay clothes. This morning I decided to just wear the dress. Yes I got clay on it but hey it washes off, just like it does off my old clothes! When you hate cleaning up you do learn to work pretty clean too. ... 22.01.2022 "Each must enter the nest made by the other imperfect birds" Rumi I made these wheel thrown bowls with woven tops in March / April 2020, when lock down first occurred and the affects of Covid hit Australia and the fragility of our existence was laid bare. How quickly our lives were turned upside down and we could only watch as that which we thought was true unraveled. ... Just like the birds nest high in the trees, we too are at the mercy of the winds. 2020 has been (and in many ways continues to be) such a roller coaster of a year, exposing our deepest insecurities and making the world once again feel very large. 04.01.2022 Making the most of the full moon magic These are some new designs of cups for my Sacred Full Moon collection. Each piece goes through a number of stages to before its completed........ A thought in my head Becomes a sketch in my book A ball of clay is weighed, kneaded and thrown ... It’s left to dry to leather hard The base of the form is trimmed and stamped A handle is formed and attached Little feet have been added A slip is brushed on It’s left to dry The design from the sketch book is carved The piece is left to dry completely The first firing to 1000 degrees centigrade The glaze ingredients are carefully weighed out and combined in their exact proportions The piece is glazed The second firing to 1240 degrees centigrade The 12 carat gold is hand painted onto the design It’s left to dry and cure The third firing to 720 degrees centigrade The bases are sanded The piece is ready to be photographed and added online, or to go to its store You get to love it and share its magic So many stages and processes to bring each and every piece to life for you to enjoy. A lovely mix of things to do. With the grade 9 students we are going to incorporate some ceramics into their Still Life unit. Pinched snd coiled vessels that they can decorate and glaze. Today will be all about the making and next time the decorating. I’m looking forward to it. 02.01.2022 A rainy week = full shelves as pieces take longer to dry. There are so many steps and processes in making with clay and so many things that can go wrong at each step. Slow and careful drying before the first biscuit firing reduces the risk of cracks or any mishaps (read explosions) in the kiln. Damp weather means an extra few days on the shelf.
