Plenty of gambling options off the tee here Rolling towards courses in 2020, no. 53 - Casino GC, NSW. Par 70, 5648m It’s still late July and another 1 hour trip from our Stony Chute base takes me to the self-proclaimed beef capital of Australia, Casino. Population about 10,000, less than 2 hours from the Qld border and lies on the Richmond River. The golf course is a little beauty, with some character. Well treed without being overbearing, mostly medium sized pines and gums, with some large strategically placed gums. Medium sized 328 Bermuda greens that were dormant in July but rolled smoothly and were very receptive. Fairways predominantly kikuyu: some wide and some narrow. It is a course with great variety. There are 3 long par3s on the front (174, 178, 194), 2 very short 3s on the back (118, 133). Some excellent short par 4s caught my attention (1-289, 11-256, 16-319m) which, together with the 449m par 5 6th, give real risk reward decisions. Memorable holes for me: 2 (379m bending slightly left with some protruding trees left, so it feels like they are pushing you into the right side); 4 (super 338m that looks really wide off the tee but a copse of very tall gums short and right of the green require your tee shot to be left of centre); 6 (450m par 5 that bends slightly right, gives you help via some mounds with the teeshot, then has water short on both sides of the green to keep you very honest on the 2nd if you want to have a go at it, no bail out here!); and 16 (super designed 319m par 4 which plays shorter than that. Bends hard left with many options from the tee including taking it over large gums on the inside corner. Downhill from the corner to the green so the more you cut the corner, the harder it runs toward the green). This is a fun track and will be appreciated by the shot-makers. Basic things are done well: variety of lengths & shapes, difficulty of green complexes in relation to yardages etc. This was a very enjoyable experience and I did encounter the friendliest, most helpful pro (Lang) that I’ve come across so far.
