24.01.2022 It's no secret that this is one of my favourite parts of the world. Bluff Knoll/Pualaar Miial and the Stirling Ranges/Koikyennuruff are simply magic. Where else in Western Australia can you get snow in winter (yes, there's even a ski club!), quokkas at the top of a mountain (bet you didn't know that fun fact), carpets of wildflowers in the spring (there are more known wildflowers here than in the entirety of the British Isles), and hiking elevations over 1000m that are millio...ns of years old. That's not to mention the welcoming country charm of the communities here, some of the state's best produce and wine and one of Australia's best meat pies from the Mt Barker bakery. No surprises then than I struggled to squeeze everything into the word count for my latest piece in RAC WA Horizons magazine. 07.01.2022 Yes, those are houses in the background. I might live in one of the most stunning regions in the world, but it’s possible to find beauty anywhere if you look closely enough. Mountains, beaches, wineries and forests are nice; but a few flowers nodding in these golden hues of dusk got me good on my afternoon walk around town. I’ve been spending today slowing down. Easing into 2021 with clarity and intention after a bulldozer of a year. I’m not normally one for New Year anythin...gs: celebrations or resolutions. However it’s a bit different this year. I’m not sure if it’s the intensity of the year, or simply that the pause button over Xmas is perfectly timed for some space and reflection for once. Usually it’s a busy period of work and family commitments, but the space and downtime has been necessary to recalibrate. Heck, I’ve even managed to pick up a novel, get the paint brushes going and nap in the same afternoon. Any one else feeling similar feels?
03.01.2022 There's something about an old shearing shed that is 50% fascinating and 50% a scene from an outback thriller. This old shed at Wooleen Station is like a time capsule. Light splinters in from cracks in the corrugated iron, spiderwebs thread across a kitchenware graveyard and rusty fridges. Newspapers and magazines lie abandoned by the last readers (and workers) here. As we stepped under the doorframe a bat fluttered about in the high roof cavity, shocked by the intruders entering its peaceful resting spot. I'm not actually looking at the bat here - it's the roof that's captivating in this shed...I'll share more in the next post. How ironic that I was here researching a piece for Escape Magazine and a copy of the mag sat on the table - last opened in 2010.
