24.01.2022 NO BRIDGE! across the Daintree River One of the primary reasons a bridge over the Daintree River is a bad idea is the impact that the lack of access has had on development north of the river. A car ferry has operated across the Daintree River since the early 1960s, and this has slowed down the rate of development. This is why pockets of the Daintree rainforest have remained relatively untouched. A bridge over the Daintree River to lead to an increase in development in this ...ecologically important area. There will be an immediate increase in traffic with the potential for the increased threats to wildlife including cassowaries. Please sign the petition now at https://bit.ly/2TpjiBj The Mayor of the Douglas Shire Council has proposed that steps be taken to build a bridge over the Daintree River. This includes suspending an existing contract that would provide a second solar-powered ferry across the Daintree. The proposed bridge across the Daintree River will result in the further development of the World Heritage value Daintree Rainforest and must be stopped. People power has saved the Daintree time and time again and it will this time too. Sign the petition to demand the Douglas Shire Council dismiss the proposals for a bridge over the Daintree River which will irreparably impact fragile ecosystems and the endangered animals that live within them. https://www.rainforest4.org/stop_the_bridge_across_the_dain

22.01.2022 If we could buy just one property in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest for conservation Lot 157 Cape Tribulation Road at Diwan would be the one. The endangered Cassowary, rare Bennett’s Tree kangaroo, and the Musky Rat-kangaroo are all found here, however, on this 8-hectare property, it is the rainforest itself that is exceptionally important. Read more at: https://www.rainforest4.org/saving_daintree_s_lot_157_and_i The rainforest vegetation found on Lot 157 is the grandest a...nd most archaic of all rainforests in Australia, possessing many primitive flowering plants. Tere are many very large trees reaching 35 meters tall with impressive buttress roots. The trees are festooned with epiphytes being ferns and orchids with large lianas and other vines cascading from above. The Spur Mahogany tree (Dysoxylum pettigrewianum) and Fan Palm (Licuala ramsayi) is a characteristic feature of these rainforests. 19.01.2022 Mission Beach Cassowaries at risk from approved heliport development. The Cassowary is so iconic to Far North Queensland, that one of the local government areas is named Cassowary Coast Regional Council. Yet that hasn’t stopped this authority from approving a controversial new heliport development that will significantly impact the already-endangered cassowaries of Mission Beach.

18.01.2022 No Bridge over the Daintree River. Sign the petition and have your say. "No more development. Just leave the Daintree as an ancient rainforest" "The Daintree is a beautiful and unique part of Australia, there is already too much traffic wandering around the area. A bridge would only increase this and more damage would occur to this special environment" "This place is far too beautiful to destroy with a bridge which would open it up to far more traffic and people. The river i...s a natural barrier to large scale development and to protect wildlife and the ecology" "A bridge across the Daintree River will bring much more traffic, and the increase in traffic will lead to greater danger for cassowaries and other endangered species that are critical to the rainforest’s natural ability to regenerate:. "One of the most beautiful and very special ecosystems in Australia, No more Development in the Daintree" https://www.rainforest4.org/stop_the_bridge_across_the_dain See more

14.01.2022 It's been a big year for the protection of land in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest with six properties purchased for conservation. The properties are shown in maps shared at this link https://bit.ly/33FRQo0 Thank you to all of our wonderful donors! We are delighted to have made this progress towards reversing the impacts of the rural residential subdivision that was created in the 1980s. We don't receive any government funding and all of these properties were purchased with donations from individuals who believe the Daintree Lowland Rainforest should be protected forever. The properties are located in Forest Creek, Cow Bay, and Diwan. All of the properties have a boundary that connects them to land in the Daintree National Park estate. 14.01.2022 Amazing biodiversity! 270 species of plants have been identified on Lot 157 Cape Tribulation Road in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest making this the most biodiverse property we've ever surveyed. Read the story at https://bit.ly/3iZfMsl Ecologist Kristopher Kupsch conducted a vegetation survey on the 9th and 10th of September 2020. The high diversity ~270 species and the presence of twelve species listed on a state conservation legislation and five species which are locally significant highlights the refugial endemism of the rainforest on Lot 157. 05.01.2022 The Daintree Lowland Rainforest is the oldest tropical rainforest in the World and boasts the greatest diversity of plants and animals found in Australia. Right now, the local government Douglas Shire Council has tabled plans to build a bridge over the Daintree River. A bridge over the Daintree River is a terrible idea. Here are ten reasons why. https://bit.ly/33HuL4U

03.01.2022 A Southern Cassowary making a low frequency ‘booming’ call. Cassowaries produce a low frequency booming call near the floor of the human hearing range (down t...o 24 Hz). Low frequency sound travels much further without deterioration in the dense understory of the rainforest. This ‘booming call’ therefore enables the cassowaries to communicate with each other at some distance. I was lucky enough to spend about 30 minutes with this beautiful Cassowary in the Daintree National Park a few weeks ago. I sat next to it on the forest floor photographing it for a while and then noticed iti taking a large gulp of air and starting ‘puffing’ itself up. I’ve seen this behaviour before so I knew what was coming next and decided to start filming. The sound is at such low frequency that humans can only just hear it, however you can actually feel the vibrations in your body. I’ve heard this sound in the rainforest on numerous occasions but it was an amazing and beautiful experience witnessing this at such a close range. You will most likely not be able to hear the sound from this video on a phone but if you listen on decent speakers you should be able to hear the ‘boom’.
