25.01.2022 A baby's cry is her/his way of communicating to parents that they need something. If you are a parent trying to cope with a crying baby you will know how distressing their prolonged crying is to themselves, to you and to anyone nearby. Picking up and cuddling or breastfeeding your crying baby will not start bad habits or spoil them. If they cry, they need you and the more upset they are, the more they need a loving parent to make everything all right again.... #breastfeeding #mumsandbubs #lactation #nurse #midwife #cryingbaby Contact Cass Walden on: M: 0458 146 248 or E: [email protected]

25.01.2022 What does latching mean in breastfeeding? Latching refers to how your baby fastens onto the breast while breastfeeding. This will help your baby open their mouth wide.... Aim your nipple just above your baby's top lip. Make sure your baby's chin isn't tucked into their chest. Aim your baby's lower lip away from the base of your nipple. #breastfeeding #mumsandbubs #lactation #nurse #midwife #breastfeedinglatching Contact: M: 0458 146 248 or E: [email protected]

21.01.2022 How Much Caffeine Can I Drink While Breastfeeding? Though babies can't process caffeine as quickly as adults, breastfeeding mothers can still consume moderate amounts. According to Healthline you can safely have up to 300mg of caffeine per day or the equivalent of two to three cups (470710 ml) of coffee. Caffeinated soda, coffee, tea, and chocolate are OK in moderation. However, large amounts of caffeine can dehydrate your body and lower your production of breast milk.... #breastfeeding #mumsandbubs #lactation #nurse #midwife Contact: M: 0458 146 248 or E: [email protected]

21.01.2022 HOW IMPORTANT IS THE MOTHER CHILD BOND? Babies usually attach to their main caregiver, but they can certainly bond with other people. It's usual for a baby to attach to their mother, since by month 8 of her pregnancy, a baby can recognise and be soothed by the mother's voice while in the womb. Bonding is essential for normal infant development. When a caregiver consistently responds to an infant's needs, it sets the stage for the growing child to enter healthy relationships w...ith other people throughout life and to appropriately experience and express a full range of emotions. #breastfeeding #mumsandbubs #lactation #nurse #midwife #motherchildbond Contact: M: 0458 146 248 or E: [email protected]

16.01.2022 It is common for many women to at times feel overwhelmed in the beginning. It's understandable as you are often exhausted, emotional, and learning new skills constantly in the first days. It is also a rollercoaster where often you feel so elated and in love, you think you may burst! 15.01.2022 It’s best to try to breastfeed your baby in the first hour after birth. By latching on and sucking rhythmically, he begins switching on the cells in your breasts to initiate your milk supply.1 It isn’t known as the ‘magic hour’ for nothing! Ideally, your baby will be put on your chest as soon as he’s born to give him access to the breast. He might feed, he might not; but give him the opportunity to do so. Support his body and let him attempt to find his way to your breast and... self-attach. However, if your baby doesn’t attach, healthcare professionals are usually very skilled at helping mums with positioning. Baby-led attachment, with mum in a semi-reclined breastfeeding position, is a good way to start. 14.01.2022 Often newborns will smile in their sleep. Sometimes a smile in the early weeks of life is simply a sign that your little bundle is passing gas. But starting between 6 and 8 weeks of life, babies develop a "social smile" - an intentional gesture of warmth meant just for you. This is an important milestone. 13.01.2022 IS MY BABY CRYING TOO MUCH? Babies are born with the ability to cry. Crying is their main way of communicating. They cry when they’re hungry, tired, uncomfortable, sick or in pain. Sometimes they cry because they need comfort. But it can sometimes be hard to work out what your crying baby needs. So when your baby cries, start by checking that baby isn’t sick or hurt. If you’re not sure, make an appointment with your GP or call your child and family health nurse. Common causes...: 1. Hungry Baby. The most common reason babies cry is because they are hungry. They stop crying at the onset of feeding. By the end of the feeding, they are happy. 2. Sleepy Baby. The second reason babies cry is they need sleep. They need their parent to put them in a comfortable position. It may be swaddled and on their back. Then they fuss a little and fall asleep. 3. Fed Too Much. Some babies cry because of a bloated stomach from overfeeding. Unlike gas, too much milk can cause discomfort that lasts a short time. 4. Clothing. Being too hot or too cold can make a baby cry. So can clothing that is too tight. 5. Dirty Nappy. Poo is very irritating to the skin. If not cleaned off, it can cause pain and burning. 6. Colic. Colic is the main cause of recurrent crying during the early months. All babies have some normal fussy crying every day. When this occurs over 3 hours per day, it's called colic. When they are not crying, they are happy. 7. Pain (Serious). Painful causes include an earache, mouth ulcers, or a raw nappy rash. #breastfeeding #mumsandbubs #lactation #nurse #midwife Contact: M: 0458 146 248 or E: [email protected]

13.01.2022 FATHERHOOD It is the hardest jobbut also the most gratifying job. It has special depth if you are patient, and invest in the meaning of the relationship with the mother of your children. That makes it especially good. The experience of fatherhood isn’t something that can be easily put into words. It’s wonderful. It’s terrifying. It’s a job that begins at conception and goesuntil the day you die. It transforms your relationships with everything else in your life, your work,... your spouse, your own parents. It introduces you to the world of unavoidable reality. All of this at once can feel difficult to navigate, especially if you’re a first time dad. 11.01.2022 IS MY BABY OVERWEIGHT Everyone loves a chubby baby - there’s something about a roly-poly belly and thighs that is completely adorable. Baby fat is something people don’t worry about. Not only do we think of it as cute, we think of it as healthy - and temporary. Unfortunately, it’s not healthy or temporary. Which is why parents need to be mindful of their baby’s weight. According to the World Health Organization growth charts, a baby with a weight-for-length greater than the... 98th percentile is considered to have a high weight for length. Good health habits not only help your children now, but for the rest of their life. #breastfeeding #mumsandbubs #lactation #nurse #midwife #overweightbabies Contact: M: 0458 146 248 or E: [email protected]

11.01.2022 HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR BABY HAS COLIC? Signs of colic may include the following: Intense crying that may seem more like screaming or an expression of pain. Crying for no apparent reason, unlike crying to express hunger or the need for a diaper change. Extreme fussiness even after crying has diminished. The crying of a colicky baby often seems discomforting, intense and as if the baby is in pain. Colic usually reaches its peak at 6-8 weeks after birth. Colic ends for 50% of ...cases around 3 months and in 90% of cases by 9 months of age. A colicky baby is not an unhealthy baby. #breastfeeding #mumsandbubs #lactation #nurse #midwife Contact: M: 0458 146 248 or E: [email protected]

08.01.2022 BREASTFEEDING LATCH - GETTING IT RIGHT! Latching on is the way the baby takes your nipple and areola into their mouth to suckle and feed. A baby who attaches well to the breast can help prevent many breastfeeding problems. It’s more likely for breastfeeding to be comfortable and for the baby to be able to remove milk well from the breast. This helps ensure a good milk supply so the baby grows well.... Sore, grazed or cracked nipples usually mean your baby is not attached properly and has damaged your nipples. A poorly attached baby is not usually taking enough milk. This can lead to a blocked duct or mastitis. Breastfeeding, although natural, is also a learned skill. This is especially true in modern westernised culture. A calm baby is more likely to be able to follow through on their instincts than a baby who is upset. Their tongue will be down and forward which is where it needs to be to help achieve good attachment to the breast. Supporting and helping Mums and Bubs on their breastfeeding journey. 03.01.2022 Making the decision to breastfeed is a personal matter. It's also one that's likely to draw opinions from friends and family. Breast milk provides the ideal nutrition for infants. It has a nearly perfect mix of vitamins, protein, and fat - everything your baby needs to grow. And it's all provided in a form more easily digested than infant formula. Breast milk contains antibodies that help your baby fight off viruses and bacteria. Breastfeeding lowers your baby's risk of havi...ng asthma or allergies. Plus, babies who are breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months, without any formula, have fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses, and bouts of diarrhea. They also have fewer hospitalizations and trips to the doctor. 02.01.2022 All babies are different. Some poo every time they feed; others can go days without a poo. This is all normal. A lot will depend on how old your child is, whether they are breast or formula-fed, or whether they have moved to eating solid foods. But certain kinds of poo can be a sign that your baby might be sick or that something is missing from their diet. You might be a bit shocked by what comes out of your baby the first time they do a poo. It’s a sticky, greenish-black poo... that looks like tar but is perfectly normal. This is called ‘meconium’ and is the by-product of your baby being in the womb for 9 months. It should only take a day or two for this to go away and for the next colour poo to arrive. If your baby continues to have black or very dark poo after 4 to 5 days, speak to your doctor. #breastfeeding #mumsandbubs #lactation #nurse #midwife #babypoo Contact Cass Walden - M: 0458 146 248 or E: [email protected]
