24.01.2022 This past week Dizzie has been marina bound. These aren't our favourite places (they are expensive, hot and the water too dirty to swim) so there is usually a reason why we visit. For a while now, Justin has been monitoring rusty cracks in the wires and turnbuckles that hold up the masts. Further sleuthing revealed the standing rig was probably older than we thought, so we replaced it. Now it's all shiney and hopefully our mast won't fall down when we are sailing. Bonus! @ Port Louis Marina
23.01.2022 Spontaneous running. What boatkids do when they put their feet on land after a passage. Run children run!
21.01.2022 While waiting for boat parts to arrive, we decided to hang out around Carriacou a 6 hour sail from the main island. By far the jewel is Sandy Island where the snorkelling is spectacular, the island safe for kids to roam alone and occasionally an epic kite spot. Thanks to @intrepidphotos for the kite and drone images. Ohhh that was fun!! @ Sandy Island, Carriacou
14.01.2022 With Dizzie out of the water, we are taking a land break to enjoy the things we miss (roast spuds consecutively for 2 weeks is ok right?). It's been 18 months since we slept ashore. Turns out there's a few things boat kids don't know. 1. Toilets are easy to flush and noisy. 2. You should shower daily. 3. Ice cream: you can have at home.... 4. Ice never gets boring. 5. You should NOT open the fridge/freezer every 2mins. 6. Mum and dad have a stash of chocolate in the fridge 7. Dishwashers aren't always human. 8. Laundry doesn't take all day. 9. Beds are bouncy like. 10. Sleeping in a climate controlled environment is goooood AC for the win! 11. Nights are noisy: dogs bark, cars accelerate, toilets flush, strangers pass. 12. It’s not OK to take yourself for a stroll at 3am in a foreign country. 13. Unused space doesn’t need to be filled with dirty clothes, toys, shoes, wet towels, ETCETERA. 14. Hide and seek is actually a tricky game. 15. If you put a pencil on the table it will stay there. 16. Multiple electrical devices can be used simultaneously (and you don’t need to put on an inverter to make 240v). 17. Netflix is a thing! #boatkids @ True Blue, Saint George, Grenada
10.01.2022 Dizzie hasn't moved much lately while waiting out hurricane season. We're wondering where to go next, and what that will require (tests/quarantines/costs). Meanwhile we've taken a break from school and boat jobs to cruise within the tri-island nation of Grenada. We've been snorkling, catching up with old and new buddies and general exploring. Today, we got lost in the bush trying to find the summit (it was a fail, but the views were amazing). Yay for some adventuring again! @ Petite Martinique
10.01.2022 And so ends a mystical week on Barbuda. 7 bonfires, 7 sunsets and 7 moonrises. 7+ kid boats, several snorkels and beach combing missions. Then last night a moonbeam (full moon rainbows are a thing!). Today we woke to crystal clear calm water: We had to just get in. Friends swam over for coffee. Kaffir and yoghurt cultures were shared with new friends. School was cancelled, kids disappeared before breakfast and came back tired, sunburnt and hungry. Ahhhh! Unforgettable. @ Barbuda
09.01.2022 Dizzie is on the hard. See what we are up to here. https://www.instagram.com/p/CF8TZPJgNDB/?igshid=6hcwe0lm4z5m
06.01.2022 Got back from a provisioning run today to find my 6yo standing on the spreaders. She climbed up by herself, but this is the first she has gone ABOVE the spreaders. She is wearing a kids climbing harness (thanks Arakai), so it was all safe. Problem is she loved it so much she climbed up again at sunset without the harness and called out, 'Hi mum!', from her new favourite seat. Time to set some boundaries, my heart is still beating. @ Simpson Bay
05.01.2022 Sometimes we actually live the life social media will have you believe is our norm. Today was that day. And here's the obligatory post to prove it. Swimming, snorkling, strolling, story sharing, sundowners. MAGIC. @ Barbuda
03.01.2022 Sint Maarten, St Martin, SXM. Tiny island, 2 countries, extreme contrasts. We came to avoid paying for a Covid test and reprovision with European groceries. Ended up staying 5 weeks. We were quickly engulfed in the nightly happy hours, and catch ups with near every boat we've met this last year, who like us are coming to an open country. Happy hours morphed into beery beach afternoons, before we escaped the Dutch side and moved to the French side. It was so comfortable i...nside the lagoon but we couldn't make water, so after 3 weeks we passed back through the bridges into the rolly anchorages. The shopping was great, so we also got boat jobs done where we could buy parts (like reinsulate our freezer - we have a working freezer!). We filled every space on the boat with food in preparation for going offline in the Bahamas. Away from the mayhem, we roamed an uninhabited island, and chilled out. We stood on the crazy beach where jets land nearly on your head and people have been killed by the jet blast. Finally, after a 1000 good byes and a few false starts we escaped for Dominican Republic. SXM you were fun, but you were also good to leave! See more
