09.01.2022 Today marks 75 years since the end of the 2nd World War it is a day to commemorate the service of some one million Australians who served and say a simple ‘Th...ank You’ for your service. RE-ACTIONS TO PEACE NEWS Scenes in Casterton (Casterton News, Thursday 16 Aug 1945) The first outward sign of the news of peace in Casterton was the appearance of excited groups of employees with flags in hand, and the invasion of Henty Street by the children from the State and Elementary School. Church bells and the fire bell were rung, and for some hours the fire bell was kept continuously tolling. With tins dragging behind bicycles, small schoolboys were not slow in devising their own and rather novel way of making merry. Although according to previous arrangements shops were supposed to keep open until noon, every shop was quickly closed up and employees fled. Police barricaded off Henty Street from Clarke to McPherson Streets and with this protection from traffic, school children had full use of the road, and the Celebrations Committee (only appointed the previous afternoon) was quickly carrying out plans to erect bunting and coloured lights in front of the Town Hall. Meanwhile members of the Celebrations Committee held an emergency meeting to make some alterations in original arrangements, for the vital news, although expected, did come with some degree of suddenness. The first strains of band music were heard when the Pipe Band marched to the Town Hall and played a selection before the commencement of the United Thanksgiving Service at 2pm. Although Casterton did not witness the spontaneous boisterous celebrations as witnessed in the big cities, there was adequate outward expressions of joy and relief. An impromptu procession of two hundred young people which paraded Henty Street in the footsteps of the Pipe Band after the United Thanksgiving Service heralded the evening’s celebrations.

03.01.2022 Thank you to Jane Sullivan, who has sent us this photo. Can you recognise any locals? Jeremiah Cleary (SN 1252) was a local Sandford man. Like many others from the area, he enlisted in the AIF. Jeremiah served in the 39th battalion "D" company. Jeremiah is seated, third from right. There were other locals this battalion. This photo is of "D" company 39th Battalion. There may be local faces in the photo, but I don't know. Can anyone name locals?

02.01.2022 Truly an exciting day for CDHS today with the offical opening of History House by Bernard Wallace. Located at the old Visitor Info Centre in Casterton - we will provide the opportunity for family research and any number of new projects ..... but first a few thank you's -- the Rotary Club of Casterton did an outstanding job providing much needed muscle power to move all our shelving and research material to our new premises, Roger Dalby did his bit when needed and our local computer whiz Glen Delahoy worked tirelessly reinstalling our computers, uploading files, fixing the microfiche machine and any number of other things - our sincere thanks to all CDHS members

02.01.2022 Can anyone help Camperdown Historical Society out.
