15.01.2022 General Meeting Monday, 3 June 2019 Prostitution on the Goldfields Guest Speaker Dr. Brian Rhule The social role of women on the Victorian goldfields has been largely neglected by many historians in the past. While many turned to domestic occupations such as washerwoman, cook, seamstress or general servant, others found themselves among a class regarded by the police, the courts and others in the community as ‘common prostitutes’.... June Guest Speaker, Dr Brian Rhule, has undertaken a preliminary study of women who were convicted by the courts and imprisoned on the basis of evidence presented by the police that these women were common prostitutes. Using information obtained from prison registers and court reports, his talk includes an examination of the prior occupational, national and religious backgrounds of these women. His presentation will focus on the Central Victorian area, with an emphasis on Castlemaine, to ask the listener to decide whether the term ‘common prostitute’ was an appropriate occupational description for many women whose circumstances led them into the darkest corners of society in towns such as Castlemaine and Bendigo. The meeting commences 7.30 at The Former Court House, 7 Goldsmith Crescent, Castlemaine, with a brief business meeting and after a short break Dr. Rhule will begin his presentation approximately 8.00 pm. Supper follows the presentation. Please join us for this fascinating subject.

02.01.2022 Whilst the Covid 19 pandemic has managed to change how we operate, and close the Former Court House to the public, it has not stopped the Society from providing research to many people via our Postal Research service, nor volunteers continuing indexing and other work at home. The Society’s Research Co-ordinator has been busy answering research requests from local, interstate and overseas researchers. Research subjects have ranged from footballers, tennis clubs, miners, the ...Old Gaol to property and hotels. We may even have been busier in isolation than when open to the public. The Society is run solely by volunteers and apart from the occasionally successful grant application, receives no funding from government or council. It relies on Membership Subscriptions and research fees to finance storage, equipment, cataloging and development of indexes to the Society’s extensive archive collection so that these resources are accessible to researchers. Also, as the Committee of Management for the heritage listed Former Court House which serves as our Research Centre, the Society has responsibility for maintenance and care of this historic property. Details of the research services and charges can be obtained by sending an email to [email protected] listing names, dates or facts which may assist in checking if our holdings include information you are looking for.
